UPCOMING TUTORIAL:  Friday 22nd August: People Sketching

This week I'll be creating a tutorial from one of these references so which one interests you the most? Let me know in the poll and why you liked it in the comments!

FEEDBACK NEEDED: I'm currently refreshing some of my older fundamental tutorials and reorganising my collections. I have uploaded totally new versions of the first four fundamentals tutorials to make them more concise and easy to follow. If you have time and would like to attempt the basics again, I'd love to hear any feedback on them! I'm still in the process of editing new fundamentals about people and urban sketching which will be available later.

Also, in general, how are you finding my tutorials and the setup here on Patreon? Is there anything that you'd like to see me improve? I try and cater to a large range of skills levels and interests so it's important I hear from you guys if there's anything I am missing or you find difficult to follow. Thanks!

Scott and Rachel Burk

Number two. Why? I can easily draw the flowers. I can easily draw the window. Putting them together is my struggle.

ReNae S

Two. Looks like a composition I can wrap my head around

Kerry Methot

I will check out the older tutorials Scottie, but just in general, all of your sketching and painting tutorials are very organized, detailed and easy to follow. You clearly communicate your thought process and share all the pertinent information as why and how you arrived at that particular info. It all makes so much sense, that is exactly why I support your Patron channel. I love them, they are all pretty challenging, but fun and I always learn something new.

Deb Kuykendall

#1 because I want to be able to depict the age of a person. #2 because the angle of her legs will be challenging to depict without it looking like she was in a car wreck!

Beverly

Boohoo - I don’t want to do 2 either - don’t want to paint a fake painted flower wall - not enough face - I like the crabby face of the old lady- more interesting

CBond007

I'm torn between 1 and 3. 3 ultimately wins for me because the elderly man is so adorable.

Christina Rodriguez

I pick 2 because the position and angle of the legs looks too complicated to attempt on my own

Carmel Spencer

I like no 2 because there is more content in it, but depicting age would be a challenge too. I choose no. 2 for her face, to learn to show age.

Carmel Spencer

Sorry I meant no. 1, to show age. Bhleah my mistake.

Barbara

Love the old man #3, there are some interesting details in it like the cap, glasses, the angle of the body and the way his arms are placed. Of course #1 is always interesting since her hair is the same color as mine!!

Polly Paget

What time are these live sessions,? I am in EDT time zone. I like them all. Attitude for no. 1. Sitting position for no. 3.

Polly Paget

What is the time on Fridays??

Sadie

Nr. 2 for me. The pose is interesting and challenging. She is engrosed in her writing (or sketching maybe :-) and the scene makes you wonder about her story.

Anna

2 I like the background..window and flowers. A bit of interior view. I am new here and am enjoying your foundational videos. I noticed you were reorganizing them and like the different categories. You are such a uplifting teacher and put so much work into everything. Thank you

Jen Arriaga

I chose two. I like all of the elements, the chair, background, and the pose. This will be challenging for me, but I’m up for it!

Umashanker VD

I thought was difficult to capture - not much in terms of pose or position, but a characteristic face, not much of a background either - the other two are great poses and interesting backgrounds definitely. So if one is compelled to draw the first one .....?

John

No 2 please. It’s a nice balanced composition with a person, furniture and some greenery.

F829

N. 2! The position of the woman it's difficult for me but I like the whole composition of the picture 😊

Elly

I like both 2 and 3. 2 has a nice variation of colors. 3 looks lovely and peaceful and artsy

Karin

I really love all your tutorials, they are so easy to follow! I like that for the basics collection there is an order in which to complete the tutorials, I think it would help (at least help me) if there would also be an order in which to follow the fundamental tutorials

john connell

2 is beautiful window with colours is amazing.

Areta

I like number 3 as it has less risk of me skewering facial features! But 2 would be interesting also :)

Chris Powell

These are all great reference photos. I chose #2 because of its composition and colors. I’m looking forward to this tutorial. I’m new to your Patreon page and will be happy to go test drive your redone fundamentals pages. And I’m excited about an insect tutorial. Thank you.

Lorna Graham

#1 as I love faces with character and this one definitely has it. However I really don’t mind which one wins Scottie. I will try the basic fundamentals again and get back to you for feedback 😊

Cami

Thanks for taking time to refresh the basics/fundamentals tutorials, Scottie! I feel like many instructors don’t do this often enough. Technology changes, platforms improve, teaching methods and approaches change. Updating and refreshing fundamental and older content is great for your students. I am looking forward to viewing them this week sometime!

Julia

Definitely 2

Julia

Yes people and urban sketching are things I need to practise. Your tutorials are so good I love following even if my end result isn’t perfect 😂👩‍🎨

Lorna Graham

I have followed through your introduction to my Patreon and it is perfect Scottie, easy to follow and to be honest I think you have covered everything. I fancy working through the basics again to refresh certain skills as I do sometimes forget ie shoes and feet! I have also downloaded the basic sketching materials guide which is so useful. Sorry I can't add any further comment at the moment but I find your tutorials very simple to sketch along to and I am more than happy with my Patreon memebership 🙌

Rosie Green

Definitely No 2 for me for the Tutorial :-D. And I am very happy with how you are running your Patreon Scottie :-D. That's great you have refreshed your Basics Tutorials. I'll jump in and take a look...

New Sketcher

hi Scottie, so far I found your tutorials suits me the best 😃 I'd like to have more variation tutorials such as simplifying complex big building, like european, colonial building and asian temple (Thai, India, Bali and so on.) and variaton of public transports like airplane, tram, classic train, modern train, trishaw, tuktuk. there are still many interesting tutorials to enrich the collection like draw quiet water, stream, wave, hitting wave, waterfall , rain ... 🙏

Melissa

Hi Scottie. I'm laughing here because I suspect I am the only one who has voted for Reference 1. My knee-jerk reaction was to go for the middle reference who is lovely and graceful. The first one is a bit off-putting because she's looking straight into the eye of the viewer and I can't help but wonder if she spoke to you, i.e. "Hey! Just what do you think you're doing?" So I consider that she will be challenging and unaesthetic and Different. After all of this, I would not be sad if the lovely middle reference #2 wins the vote.
