UPCOMING TUTORIAL:  Friday 24th October: Portrait Sketching - Fundamentals

This week I am making a new fundamentals tutorial on how to sketch portraits. I have been collecting ideas of what topics to include and how to best to present them in an easy to follow way.

Please let me know in the poll below what topics you'd like to learn most as well as if there is anything I've missed that would be helpful for beginners.

Over the next four weeks my goal is to go through four beginner fundamental topics so I can improve my course and bring together multiple ideas across different tutorials into one place!

WHAT'S COMING UP:

Friday 31st October: Urban Sketching Sketching - Fundamentals

Friday 7th November: Watercolor Basic Beginner Fundamentals

Friday 14th November: People Sketching - Fundamentals

Hi 👋 I'm new here and I want to thank you for this Patreon. You have no clue how big your impact is on my life. Thanks and I'm looking forward to learn and explore!

Maureen West

I'm happy with most any tutorial you make. I have become far less sloppy in my sketching. I really appreciate the time and effort you have put in to make these tutorials easy to follow. Thank you.

Beverley Saindon

Can we one day learn portraits of Fantasy Characters? I know it's a different perspective & perhaps out of the ballpark but it's a fun & enjoyable subject of mine. ☺️

Update on previous posts of my group presence: My husband & I are now back from the from the Cancer Treatment in Victoria ( Vancouver Island) but still have upcoming scans & appointments in near future. Doing this art, has been so soothing & a joy during this difficult journey.❤️

Kris Kirby

I would like to know how to add details to show age and likeness, but all the topics are super useful so it doesn't really matter!

Lorna Graham

I love portrait sketching Scottie and have already learnt so much from joining your Patreon. I am keen to go over all the points you have mentioned. I do sometimes struggle with the proportion of the head at the beginning but looking forward to learning and revising all of them . 🙌🏻

I would specifically like to see, how to draw women’s curly hair, there’s so many little highlights I have no idea how to capture that.

Getting hair right has always been hit and miss - any tips and tricks

All of it will be helpful! Learning your observational technique has made me much more confident. I enjoy everything you teach.

Leo Wilson

I really appreciate the focus on portraits, Scottie. In the lesson could you please suggest a site that we could go to, to view alternate images that reflect similar features that were covered in the lesson. For example the lady but without a scarf or turtle neck. Equally could you suggest (reference) skin tones that we could adopt to change the implied ethnic origin? This would be simply a link to the four samples you have preciously covered. I have used this set of skin tones a number of times now … they really work well… this just reminds us of the depth of your learning library.

I think different facial expressions would be nice. Like the same person laughing, crying, looking surprised or something like that. If it doesn't fit in this tutorial, maybe it could be covers in a future one. Thank you!

Monica D Franks

I’m not sure if anyone’s mentioned this before, but I’d really love to see more portrait tutorials that include people of color… different skin tones, hair textures, and features. I know that can be a sensitive topic, but I think it would be such a beautiful way to celebrate diversity through art. 💛✨

Beverley Saindon

Thank you. I would never expect you to deviate from your course curriculums. I’m amazed at the variety you teach! It’s not like the online courses I’ve taken that are dragged out with long chapters of theory & no reply to questions. At my age I’d be dead before I get to draw & paint! 😅 Thank you for that!

dave

Mostly I would like to include people, and their faces, as part of an urban sketch. So not particularly detailed, but at least representative and fitting in with the rest of the picture. Also, as people don’t stay still, a way to do this quickly.

Raf

Scottie, I love your people and architecture tutorials. I really enjoy urban sketching at the museum, and I’d love to see lessons on drawing classical sculpture busts and full figure sculptures from different angles. It seems like a great way to study the nude-ish form in a family-friendly way, and the dramatic poses in classical sculpture would be exciting to draw. Maybe some classical architecture could be included too. Your teaching is the best I’ve found. Thank you!

Sara

I’m a newbie to your courses. So I don’t know enough to offer suggestions. But I did want to say I’m thrilled with the progress I’ve made so far. My goal was to increase my drawing skills and I am learning so much more. Thank you!

Ed Hummel

I have trouble with kid's faces!

Emily C

Looking forward to it!

Evan Burse

Any face & head tutorials sound great! Do you offer livestreams to patrons? That'd be cool

And I know your Poll has ended Scottie 😁...but I'm interested in: how many times to dip that paintbrush into the water to get the right consistency? How much water in the paint then put that on palette first then how many water dips...? Very basic I know...but I get masses of watery paint 😄. I know re practice much too. I would also love to learn different Facial Expressions...eg angry, crying, laughing etc etc 😃. Cheers! Loving yr Work ...Keep On Keeping On!
