Yes Scottie... This is fab. Look forward to getting stuck in with this tutorial

Lorna Graham

Will be doing this shortly, looks really interesting and just what I need to learn

Mary L Doty

Really clear and helpful. I tend to hold back on adding deep shadow and white to a completed sketch. I always like the look of them when I see them but if I like a sketch I tend to hold back rather than end up overdoing it. I guess that is a good reason to just try something and repeat the same sketch if undecided. Thank you for the video!

Wow Scottie, this is so good! One of your best, because many of us need these basics. You really make it look so easy and you give us the hope to learn and get better - so important! I learned much. Thank you so much.

H. E.

And btw I love your accent. Everytime you say ”hiaaarrr” I feel so good! 😁 And your English is very clear, not too fast, not too slow, and easy for non-native English speakers, thanks for that too.

H. E.

PS. I wrote a comment to your YouTube channel too (GreenlifeFin) because I love your content so much and I hope you get more Patreon supporters. I am so happy I joined, worth of every cent. And I am sure these videos take a LOT of planning, recording, editing and effort. So thank you for so much value for so affordable price.

Thanks for this tutorial, I found it very helpful. I'm curious are all of your colors actually W&N ? I've been wondering how you get some great colors from Cotman. I have a cotman set and couldn't get vibrant colors from it so I upgraded to artist paints and I like them a lot better. And then I joined your patreon and I was dumbfounded how you do it with Cotman, until this video where you mentioned refilling with WN.

Mathieu Chiasson

Awesome tutorial, love your color cheatsheet. Being really new to watercolor, I find your simple colors really approachable and offers a good starting point. I don't have the same palette but it was easy to find the similar colors. Thanks.

Ally Noormohamed

What brand is your 12 and 6 brush? Available on Amazon?

Dallas Milligan

Hi Scottie, thanks for the lesson. A couple of questions. For the shadows, do you tend to work wet on dry so you get a hard edge at the shadow line or wet the paper so the shadow line isn't so hard (or a mix of both)? I have most of the colours you use but not in a palette (in tubes), if I am working on these exercises for the next few months do you recommend I set up a palette (of say half tubes) to use. Also for the shadows do you find mixing the complementary colour with the main colour to create a shadow but keep the tonality. I haven't done much watercolour and no skin tones at all. Thanks.

Petra

This lesson was very interesting and I will correct old watercolors of mine again for light and shadow. Can I also use the complementary color as a shadow color?

Petra

I did all the exercises with a lot of joy, thanks Scottie !

Great Teaching thanks Scottie, I Have really enjoyed working through the Fundamentals section and so glad that I can come back to them to pick up and revise them when ever I need them .

Sophie

Hello! Can you explain your process for selecting the shadow colors? In this tutorial, we’ve seen how e.g. viridian has a blue-green shadow. Is that what you always use or does it differ based on some parameters? Would love to hear more about this aspect of your colour choices. 🙂

Gary Zeff

Your color chart shows 11 colors but your set shows 16 colors. What else is added?

Christopher Kovaly

I feel so rigid and too worried about the outcome. I am terrible at letting go. Haha. And having a little bit of shake in my hands doesn’t help. I love the instruction and will keep at it. 😊

Caroline Frulla

This is a comment of gratitude! Your watercolor tutorial really unlocked something in my brain. I went back to one of my old watercolor paintings that I didn’t love and added in shadows and splatters and it’s a whole new piece! I’ve been loving your fundamental tutorials so far, and can’t wait to watch another!! Thank you!

I am using an Angora Opaque Colors watercolor set. I cannot quite get my paint to look like the demos. I'm trying to just use more water, but do you think this type of paint would make that much difference in the results?

Alice

Scottie, your tutorials amazing and quite soothing. Your ozzie accent is a bonus as well! (I hope I got the ozzie accent correct).

Alfonso Contreras

Wow! Scottie brother, I totally just had a moment of understanding like no other. I've been an artist for a long time, mostly acrylic, lots of pen and pencil work. Watercolor is very new to me, the rules are so different when compared to other mediums. So while I was doing this course I was having a tuff time at it. Then I began controlling the little bead of paint and patting my brush on a paper towel. Holy Moly BATMAN! What a difference these little techniques can make.

Samira M

Really enjoyed this tutorial, i've always wanted to be able to paint in water colour, i love the delicacy it has, but never had the confidence to try. This tutorial gives a nice starting point. Thanks.

Monica

I'm finally being brave and learning to use watercolor (new year resolution I guess). As always you are great at explaining!

Lee Patterson

I have trouble with splatters of all things. I tap the brush and nothing happens. Is it the amount of liquid I have on the brush?

Frieda

I have done several watercolor courses but I learned something new again about adding details. Thanks! And I am finally beginning to understand to start with more diluted washes!

Tash

Thanks Scottie!! I found a blog where someone described consistencies as ranging from tea to butter (tea > coffee > milk > heavy cream > butter) as you increase the pigment/paint. That helped me a lot in gauging consistency when applying to paper.

Jay Eskenazi

Hi one piece of feedback - it would be really helpful to show an overlay of what color is in the pans. I’m not sure how you have them ordered, or if i have them ordered correctly? I replaced the 2 extra pans for the white/black. But is that the same placement?

Jean Green

Scottie, I only have the small set of 12 Coitman colors. what substitute do you recommend for Perm Rose, and purple? Ty

Lyazzat Tilek

Hi! I am new here, joined yesterday. Today I finished this basic fundamentals, but I have some questions/ suggestion as a beginner. It would be great if you can show how to use brush, how much water to take or overall how to use it, should we fully dip it in the water or just a tip and so on.

Willem

I somehow find it difficult to convince myself that the mix I create in the palette will be the same on paper. It often is a surprise aka mistake and demotivates to continue the sketch if it happens too often. Do you test the color sitting in the brush on a paper towel first?

Chelsea Bolinger

I really like the updated tutorial for this! I like having the subjects to color vs just shapes

RUTH KOLODNEY

I started your tutorial on watercolor wash basics. I would stop the tutorial from time to time in order to paint what you had shown. But the tutorial has stopped now and i cannot get it to restart. Is there any way to correct this? It is most helpful for me to place on pause while I practice doing what you instruct. Please advise. TNX

Andreina Garcia

Love it! Thanks for sharing the gems of your style ❤️ I think the details makes the watercolors even more alive

Monica D Franks

Hi there! I’m a bit confused about how we’re supposed to measure the width and height of the objects. Do we download the attachments, print them out small (like 4 x 6), and then use our fingers to measure them? I know this sounds like a basic question, but I’m new to this and could really use some help! I tried measuring off my computer screen, but the objects are way too big!

Maria Clara Echeverri

Hi Scottie! you are great! I love your voice, I love your good vibes and of course your fantastic tecnnique!! Greets from Madrid

Amina Sahibzada

if you do not have cadmium yellow, can you use lemon yellow? My set does not have it. Also, i do not have Purple lake - will Cadmium red hue + Ultramarine/Cerulean blue. I have Sakura Koi 24 colors.

Marcio Bulgarelli

Hi Scottie! .. The subtitles aren't showing up for me in this video.. I'm having trouble understanding spoken English.. Is it possible to add subtitles? .. Thanks!

Tony N

Hi Scottie, Do I need to find a watercolor tutorial on color use of different colors together. like a color wheel? I am very new to watercolors.

Tony N

Hey Scottie, I set up a room for sketching and painting. I want to use my tablet but it's not recognizing your Patreon page . It asks me to join. Any help

Amina Sahibzada

Hey Scottie, what colors make a variation of the color Burnt Sierra? What color alternative for that color?

Valeria Octavia

Hi everyone, I have just joined the community and already feel so much better! I had so much fun with this lesson! I did not pause the video on purpose, just to make myself go quickly, not think too much and let go of perfectionism. My objects have such character, they are not 'perfect', but this is so much better! Thank you, Scottie! Looking forward to our journey together!

Gabe

How do I upload a photo of my sketch?

Annie Harry

This is just magic watching it all come together!

Mai Dang

The first time mỹ sketch

Cindy

Such great instruction. Excited to get going on my shoe! The question I have is: how do you decide where to put your "dark dots?" Is it sort of random, where you think the object as a whole needs a little more value to make it interesting? Thank you!

Lisa J Bevan

I love fountain pen so used my favourite with de atramentis document ink which is supposed to be waterproof but it's clearly not! Still I even like it with the smudged ink and muddier colours.

Lisa J Bevan

I used proportion dividers/finders for the measuring and whilst I love the result it was really slow - urban sketching needs to be fast and loose right? I'm a bit worried that I'm using these tools as crutches and I'll never teach myself to sketch more freely? You seem to suggest that practicing slowly from tutorials at first will build the skill and confidence to be able to do this more freely - and see things more by eye?

Lisa J Bevan

Then I redrew the shoe without the tutorial but with actual waterproof ink, and only measuring the width and height and the rest by eye and it's not awful but it was quicker...
