TUTORIAL FOR THIS WEEK:  People Sketching - Group of people (Sketched at a medium size)

I hope you are all going well and had a good weekend! 🤗

We are sketching a small group of people this week, where each figure will be sketched at a medium size. This is often the best way to sketch people quickly outdoors as they are more impressionistic and simple.

Let me know below which image you'd like to sketch and leave a comment if there is anything you want me to focus on teaching in the tutorial.

WHAT'S COMING UP:

Week Starting 11th March: Fundamentals - Portraits for beginners - Everything you need to know!

Week Starting 18th March: Urban Sketching - Trees and plants in a scene

Week Starting 25th March: People Sketching - Crowd of figures (Sketched small size)

I like the #2 composition, that looks fun to draw, but #3 might be what I need to learn, just looking at this makes my brain melt 😬😂

Joel Smith

All of these photos are by a photographer who is standing. For a future sketch do you think you could find photos by a photographer who is sitting which contains people who are sitting and standing. Live sketching is much more comfortable from a chair and this will give us a chance to practice a perspective more likely to be encountered.

Karen King

I agree with Joel....but since I typically snap a quick photo of people (while pretending to be looking at my phone) so I can sketch them at home at my leisure, this one is good for that purpose.

Sheila Chandler

I was practicing drawing a group last week and would love to see how you approach drawing the group!

Karen

I like #2 because it has several different body types plus different angles on each facial position. Drawing one whole person is challenging enough but a whole row of them? Tough!

Mary L Doty

I think #1 has a good assortment of positions without being too complicated. Normally I would go for #3 but I think the first thing I would do with 3 is eliminate some of the people to make the drawing more manageable. All three are really good examples of what you would find when you are out and about. Thanks for your hard work and planning!

Sharon White

Wow! I like all three...I will be happy with any of them.

Leanne Rees

I would be happy with all 3. Each has its own learning points...that are very important.

Joni K

I picked #3, even though I shy away from overly complicated scenes. I’d like to learn some techniques for dealing with crowds of people.

Reto Häsler

I don't mind nummer 1 or 3. Its nice to sit in a coffee and sketch a group of people. They don't move so much and that gives you time to sketch. Looking forward to this challenge.

Lorna Graham

#2 is my favourite as I enjoy drawing people stood together. Next favourite is #2 as it has people sitting which is challenging but I think #3 is a little over crowded and probably wouldn’t attempt to sketch if out and about. Think Mary has some good points. Thanks Scottie ☺️

Petra

I like #2 The colors and the different people are great to sketch and the boy with the red scooter.

Lorna Graham

Think I mixed my numbers up but hopefully you all understood me 🙄😁 (busy day)
