TUTORIAL FOR THIS WEEK:  People Sketching - Lady holding an umbrella

This week we are sketching a close-up figure holding an umbrella! There are lots of interesting clothing and bags to sketch as well as the bright umbrella. I am also often asked how I make faces look older so this is a good opportunity to practice that with you . Let me know what you'd like to learn most below!

UPDATE:

I just got back from a restful vacation at the beach with my family. So today I'll be hopefully getting back to anyone who has sent me an email or comment. Thanks for all your patience while I was away! I chose the reference again this week, instead of an image poll, as I still have my girls at home on holidays so my schedule is more 'fluid' 😂.

WHAT'S COMING UP:

Week Starting 29th April: Urban Sketching - Simple Cottage Building

Week Starting 6th May: Portrait Sketching - How to sketch HAIR

Week Starting 13th May: Urban Sketching - Building with large crowd (very small figures)

Definetly hands 👍🙌🤚 and hope you had a nice holiday.

Kerstin

Did you and family sketch in the beach sand? 😅😎

Karen

What a gorgeous beach! Memories being made.

David

I had to draw some hands and bare feet this week. Yikes! That was hard. But while I feel like I’m making pretty good progress with the drawing, the painting is definitely lagging behind. I could really use some tips to keep my sketch from becoming too garish and uneven.

Roz

I hope you had a wonderful, restful fun-filled holiday with your family. You are amazing to me. Most teachers would say “I’ll be away next week. No homework.” You, on the other hand, know your students look forward to your tutorials and you actually planned one ahead. You rock Scottie. You rock! I don’t feel like I’m buttering you up, because I know everyone feels that way! You are unique.

And…the umbrella. Please. They make me crazy!

Karen Ericka Newby

Lady of a certain age with an umbrella ! How ironic ! Could have been me this weekend, visiting Alsace in the hail and snow 😫 . All is not lost, I got some great material for practising perspective and straight lines, a fortress, some beautifully restored, traditional, Alsacien houses in bright, crisp, modern colours. A figure like this one in sharp contrast to the background always leaves me wondering how to achieve that balance, and then obviously the reflected colour of the underside of the umbrella. Some neat, tricky little challenges. Have fun with the girls this week, Scottie.

Hi Scottie, the main problem for me will be the umbrella! Lovely vacation shot, pretty envious of your weather although spring has finally arrived here in the UK 🤞Hope you feel totally energised to deal with us lot and our joy of sketching 🥰

Petra

The first what I thought ^ how can I paint the color and shadow under the umbrella ^ and of course I'am interesting in all options...thank you so much for your great tutorials 😊

Najia Saâd

Bonjour Scottie, le travail de la couleur rouge du parapluie sur le visage et les mains seraient très intéressants.🧐

Lovely vacation spot. We still get down to freezing at night in the Midwest (USA) so I envy your photo location. I do fine with the large shapes and usually the proportions but if I screw up it is all in the fine details like the fingers( not the hand shape) I sometimes wonder if it is a little ADD on my part. Have fun with your girls.
