I'm finally up to my special guy.

He's got a gross beard.  He will have a mouth that talks under the moustache, haven't got the lines yet.

I might still add a little head and ear bob to this one.  My intention is that he is a dark elf but it occurred to me after I made these shots that elves, or tolkien elves anyway aren't supposed to be able to grow beards.  But it was pointed out that Bethesda elves can and there are some other explanations suggested to me that I can use (he's from the south, is half dwarf, eats weird mushrooms etc).

I'm hoping that after this cartoon is finished no one accuses me of liking catboys anymore.  Although none of the catboys from Meth Orcs Meth Harder or Prince of Vibes fared very well either.

I don't know if it looks like it but this shot took 1.5 days to do, it was brutal!  Still lots of action to go.

I've been trying to decide how I feel about AI generated images this month.  Is it art and is it ethical to use?   I even thought about making a video on the topic but I doubt I could do it justice without putting some research time and effort in.  It made me realise that my own definition of what is and isn't art is quite hazy, and I don't think I'm interested in whether something achieves the classification of art or not.  My first conclusion is that I don't consider AI images "art" because there's very distant and remote human intent behind them, but I also don't think it matters all that much.  It might be an important classification to some people but not to me.  Is a nice sunset art?  No.  Is it nice to look at?  Yes.  Is an AI image that composites 15 different sunsets together art?  Kinda, I'm rounding down to no.  It's closer to an accidental real sunset.

I thought about using AI images in paintings in the background of Todd's office in Gooseman Runs for Office, but I ran into some problems: 1) i think i need to pay to generate suitably hi resolution outputs (they need to be quite large) 2) controlling colour palettes is quite hard (this is not insurmountable I can colour correct things) and 3) enough artists are aggrieved at their work being included in AI databses that I don't think it's ethical to use them for a project that isn't personal use.  At least for now.

NYE is tomorrow at time of writing so I hope you all have a happy new years and a fun evening if you are looking for one!  I will be having a low key evening with a couple of friends who have an apartment from which you can see fireworks and I doubt it will go late.

Looks great! It always amazes me how long animation takes, it's really something else the amount of work that it requires to get something that looks cohesive. Really sad that youtube did animators so dirty with the algorithms :(

SexuaLobster

Fortunately enough people like yourself know this and are generous enough to support animators through other means! No one forced me to put so much action in this one though, we'll see if it pans out. I don't regret spending as much time as I did on the last two.

Xenan

Well I think I speak for everyone when I say we appreciate your hard work! Definitely always worth it in the end.

I am very excited to see how this one comes out, I dont even want to really see or read this post and spoil anything. I want to see it when you release it and let it wash over me.

SexuaLobster

lol fair enough. i kinda have to spoil the cartoons to a certain extent by posting progress otherwise risk giving the impression of going AWOL.

That beard is lush! As it comes to AI, as a fellow content creator, I had to try it out for myself, because like you, I had no idea how I felt about it. After 2-3 days I realized it's really hard to get anything out of it if you have a specific idea. Like it's good at "Chris Pratt as Black Panther" but nothing that's actually original. Also, even the upscaled images have a lot of glitchiness to them, and a lot of undefined details, which would be hard to edit out. If I have to guess, it will be used mostly for corporate purposes, but not for actual art.

SexuaLobster

I wanted Barney the dinosaur riding a horse like the famous napoleon painting, I settled for a purple dinosaur when I realised they didn't do copyrighted characters. But no, not even close. I tried making a "sexy walrus" for a thumbnail and dall e mini was completely unable to deliver. They're brand new though, and sometimes they do generate something impressive, I assume they'll only improve. But I doubt I'll use them unless they create some kind of public domain version which doesn't exploit living artists that don't want their work used.

SexuaLobster

Oh and I think you're right about corporate use, I've already seen ai images in advertising.

15 years ago artists and photo experts were like "photoshop is not art let's cancel it" when it was new, but soon after noone cared anymore because you still need artistic skills and mindset to create anything decent with it. Photoshop is not art, it's a tool, like brushes and paints. Same with AI; "AI art" isn't really an art, it's a tool to create art. Anyone can try to use ai image generator and get some souless collage which does not trigger any emotions at all. But it's actual artists job to spend hours trying different text prompts to bring his vision into an actual image. And then days more to perfect it with oldschool tools.

Is it me or is this channel slowly becoming more and more catboy oriented? Looking forward to the next one, these action shots are great!

keyboard_zealot

A hammer is a tool, photoshop is a tool, the vast majority of software that doesn't simulate neural networks are all tools. But AI can think, even if it's only a little bit or for a specialized purpose, so it's incorrect to call them tools.

SexuaLobster

Cheers. The first caboy in Meth Orcs Meth Harder was so well received I kept writing more in. These ones are seeking revenge for the first one's death. After this cartoon I intend to not do any more catboys.

SexuaLobster

I didn't realise people were spending days on them. If they're modifying them with artistic intent that probably qualifies as art to me.

keyboard_zealot

IMO I don't think we should be messing with AI outside of pure research until we're ready to try and build something of at least human-equivalent intelligence and give it all the same rights. Normal programs can solve all the problems that don't require thought and humans can do all the creative stuff like programming and painting. As soon as one starts simulating neural networks you run into all kind of ethical problems, both for the humans who are now competing with smaller but specialized intelligences and for the AI which are pretty much virtual slaves. I don't think there's any putting the genie back in the bottle, AI is too profitable and are probably going to be used more and more until things go really wrong, then they'll continue to be used quite a while after that until everyone actually realizes that things have gone wrong. Anyways I guess this is something of a tangential pessimistic rant, but I've been thinking about it lately after seeing some of the recent developments in ChatGPT and other AI and wanted to put it in text somewhere. On another note: I'm looking forward to the video, wizards always make things interesting, though they usually don't fare very well: thinking of the ork wizard who got his guards killed, fishbob, and that wizard who got stabbed by the vile little goblin with a heart of gold.

SexuaLobster

I agree re: there's no winding it back. I'm assuming the people making these ahve disruptor grindset philosophy and are probably hoping to break some stuff and put people out of job, cause thats one way you build a business and make $.

SexuaLobster

I really like animating wizards, I don't know if I can really pull them off well, and by that I mean you really need to be casting spells with nice effects and have flowing robes with follow through animation every time they move. I'm going to do my best with this guy.

I think the main issue with AI art is the people using it

SexuaLobster

There sure is a lot of toxicity in the debate, but maybe that's just because I see it on twitter. Everyone I've spoken to or has replied to me has been reasonable.

SexuaLobster

Thanks, its the morning after and we had a fun night, I think it's probably late afternoon or early evening for you, hope your night is fun!

Raymond

I'm probably also getting a skewed view of it thanks to twitter since I follow a lot of artists and the replies they get are pretty toxic, but the fact that the models can pretty easily just plagiarize existing art also is an issue in my book (basically to the same level as someone tracing) Especially since you can have the models do a similarity check with the existing art / vectors it has trained on to identify potentially plagiarism and then either flag it or throw it out of the results if the check is consistent enough. It's up to people that do ML to do it ethically since it's very easy to go unethical with it since it provides better results. Oh yeah: Happy new years

SexuaLobster

Thanks, it was a nice evening. Yeh I think if there was an ethical AI it wouldn't carve out as much market share. At this point it makes more sense to break things and be forced to change later if at all.

BlindPiranha

As a bearded man who currently portrays an elf, I feel validated. Without getting too into the minutia of the topic, I would agree with the concept of "art" being a reflection of artists' emotions/passions: a picture can be art but it is not explicitly always art. I would also agree with keyboard_zealot that AI isn't quite to the functional level that companies and developers are marketing them as, but it also certainly isn't the first time humanity attempted to embrace something it wasn't quite ready for yet. Regardless of whatever pending Skynet-esque apocalypse might await us (though "Idiocracy" still tends to seem more likely), I'm glad you enjoyed your holiday and Happy New Year! (it's still technically the 1st for me...)

SexuaLobster

Thanks! I think my definition of what constitutes artificial intelligence is probably hazier than what I consider art. Is calling these programs AI just marketing?

BlindPiranha

Modern definitions of AI accept the ability for a system to perform a task that, traditionally, could only logically be performed by a human. So in a sense through machine learning algorithms a system can be trained enough to qualify as an AI, but the failures of said AI still present more frequently than they might be marketed as (take autonomous passenger vehicle accidents for example). It also doesn't change the ethical issues, especially in areas such as deepfakes, where it could be utilized nefariously.

SexuaLobster

Interesting. Also I realised last night the elves in the witcher universe can grow beards as well so that's further validation for my wizard.
