I believe Edward is 15 when the show starts, and he's somewhere over 16 at this point in the story. So he has grown up some. Another interesting detail regarding Ed's growth, is that throughout the show he has been extremely hot-headed and impulsive. He runs headfirst into danger without care or concern for the consequences. Essentially a loose cannon. In this episode, when he realizes Al is close by and about to leave town, he decides not to go after him. Ed chooses not to risk the danger of either of them being seen, since that would ruin their future plans and even endanger his family in that town. This is a trope in many shounen anime, where the main character starts off acting without thinking, and as the show progresses, they learn to evaluate risks and make more mature decisions. Keep an eye out for it, for example with Luffy in One Piece.
