This right here also demonstrates how much damage Luffy actually takes from his battles as a rubber man. It could easily be way too much for any normal person to take, hence to Kuma's point, they'd normally die. However, Zoro, as we all know since the beginning is built different so he was able to tank that shit and claimed nothing happened at all. 🫡

I personally still believe in the theory that Kuma never planned to kill Zoro and he was very specific with his words. He said that it would give Zoro Luffy’s Pain not Luffy’s injuries. Pain doesn’t necessarily mean death threatening. He told Zoro it would kill him as a test for his resolve and determination. Probably will never be proven but that’s just my opinion though.

Okay...so I have been waiting to write about this. Btw I think Ron is starting to believe, guys. I think he sees the potential of Oda's Pen. Lets talk about Zoro and Sanji and the theme of Sacrifice vs what happened here. BOTH Zoro and Sanji were willing to sacrifice everything for Luffy and his dream, including their dreams. But there is one BIG difference. Sanji's sacrifice was mostly coming from a place of gratitude because, like on the Baratie, we see that he is the kind of man who will give up on even his dream as his way of saying "Thank You" Sanji in that moment was ready to sacrifice himself and die for Luffy because at any moment. he will readily give up his life for any of his crew members. He said it himself just now. You saw his childhood, how Zeff sacrificed for him and because of that he felt indebted to him. So self sacrifice is a part of his code as a gentleman. Zoro on the other hand, was also willing to sacrifice everything for his captain but unlike Sanji, his willingness to do so is coming from a place of absolute loyalty and determination. More than any other, I think this scene proves that from the minute Zoro accepted Luffy's request on Ep2 to join his crew, he wasn't just playing Pirate. We saw this highlighted first in the Luffy/Usopp fight when he threatened to leave if Luffy doesn't start acting like a real captain and STAND on business. This is not a game for Zoro. He is DEAD serious about becoming the Strongest swordsman or die trying to do so. His mentality is centered around always pushing himself to overcome whatever stands in his way, even if in this case he is to suffer all of the damage Luffy took this arc. SO Zoro knocking out Sanji is him realizing that Sanji is ready to die right then and there so they could survive. No questions asked. He also knows Sanji really well and that is why he knew knocking him out cold is the only way he would be able to stop him. Zoro knew Sanji would not have survived even if they were to split the pain between the two of them. He also knew he was the right hand of Luffy and hios first mate, so not only is it his responsibility to look out for the crew when the captain is away or out of commission, he also clearly knew he was the only one strong enough to come out of it alive. Sanji is my favorite but Zoro is absolutely the GOAT!

I agree with most of everything you said beside the part where you say Zoro knows that Sanji wouldn't survive even if they split the pain between the two of them or that he knew that he was the only one strong enough to come out of it alive. He knocks out Sanji and throws down his swords to trades his life for Luffy's before Kuma proposes to Zoro to take all of Luffy's pain as the execution method. He genuinely just wants to be the one to be the sacrifice. I do not believe he thinks for a second he can get out of this situation alive. I do agree that he thinks it is his responsibility as Luffy's first mate. He pretty much got "lucky" that he was given an execution that he actually could survive. But aside from that, I agree with pretty much the whole post.

While this arc isn't great (and the pacing issue is more Toei's fault than Oda's), its fun tone is like a breeze before the storm. In terms of narrative in such a long story, it served as a breather for the viewer until the end of the battle with Moria. From here on, things get tougher. Also, it is always nice to see how when things get real, Sanji and Zoro always protect, respect and trust each other.

Not gonna lie when Zoro got a taste of the pain Kuma sent towards him it was like I was feeling that pain too lol. Zoro the goat, he's the embodiment of loyalty and willpower. This is definitely one of the greatest scenes in One piece. Idk whether to cry or be hype. What made the scene that much more legendary is ost 'Luffy's fierce attack' one of my favorites. It's often confused with 'The very very very strongest' plus the thumbnail of it on Youtube is with Zoro in this scene.

This episode you find out there is a scientist working for the world government who has tech 500yrs ahead of mankind, Kuma is an incomplete human weapon called "pacifista" created by by Dr. Vegapunk, Kuma knows Luffy's relation to Dragon(Remember when Garp revealed that info the strawhats were surprised and so were Garp's crew) Basically that is not information anyone would just know.

Guys, Rewatching the older episodes made me realize back then, a lot of things in one piece felt like they didn’t make sense or just seemed kinda unreasonable. But at some point, we all realized… “It was Never that they didn’t make sense” BUT!! “It’s that Oda purposely wanted us to believe they didn’t ” Remember 99% of the stuff that seemed random will ends up getting explained… sometimes 100 episodes later, sometimes a couple hundred, or even a thousand. Remember, when zoro joined luffy in ep 3 he said he'd kill luffy if he had to ever leave his ambition for him, but 300 eps later hes willing to sacrifice himself for his captain and crew. zoro doesnt seem like the guy to be 2nd fiddle to anyone so the fact that he has so much loyalty to luffy all through actions, not words means a lot. without luffy all of his crewmates would probably have died if it wasnt for him and the fact that zoro knocked out sanji because he knew it was his duty and responsibility to take care of this matter when luffy is knocked out, vice captain vibes. zoro is a true right hand man to luffy

one thing that went over your guys' head is that not anybody knows about luffys relation to dragon. only garp spilled the beans to the people around him because only he knew, but nobody else does. its a secret, so the fact that kuma knows about is interesting to say the least. people only know about who dragon is but not his full name/family name (monkey D.)

I believe the method was chosen because zoro wanted to take Luffys place so kuma brought all the pain it takes to be the captain of the straw hats. What I love so much about this scene is how Zoro and Sanji interact with each other. You might think that the two don't like each other, since they're always arguing and fighting. But here you can clearly see that the two are friends and are like brothers. Zoro was ready to give up his life and his dream, which meant so much to him, for Luffy, but then Sanji came along and was ready to give his life for Zoro, because he knows how much Zoro cares about his dream of becoming the strongest swordsman in the world. And when Sanji had already given up on his life and said goodbye, Zoro hit him in the stomach with the hilt of his sword to make him fall back down because Zoro really wanted to be the one to sacrifice his life, since he couldn't handle it if someone else did it for him. Zoro is truly the protector of the Straw Hats 💚💚💚💚 And this scene was one of the reasons why I loved Zoro even more than I already did! I just love him so much, Luffy is really lucky to have him as his best friend and vice-captain, he would have died for sure if Zoro hadn't taken his pain for him 💚💚💚 And by the way, about why Zoro didn't die in the end: I think there's a theory that Zoro did indeed die standing up, but his soul got lost on the way to the afterlife and therefore returned to his body at the end. I don't know if Oda has confirmed or denied this theory, but I personally think it's pretty cool. Zoro's soul would definitely pull something like that off 😂😂

@Kee what I meant was not specifically what Kuma proposed but he knew that whatever comes, he stood a better chance to overcome it as he saw the state Sanji was in, he wasn’t gonna survive and by how he was talking, he was ready to die. So basically, if someone’s head is to roll, it’s his responsibility but if there is a chance to survive, he’s still the best bet to do so. Either way, he couldn’t let Sanji take the fall in his place

For me it felt like that Kuma saw something in the loyalty of Luffys crewmates that did something for him. Maybe some old memorie or something. That why he exhaled after Zorro and Sanji finished arguing. It felt really like it reminded him of a situation he personally was involved with. So he made it some kind of test. If Zorro dies while taking in the pain from Luffy, so be it, but if he doesnt he passed the test. Thats also why he said that Luffy has great companions after realizing that Zorro survived that. Also he said something about Dragon, basically insinuating that he knows him in some way. Really intrigued to see where it goes with Kuma.

That he will never be outside of the top 3 best characters in One Piece. You will try.. but it will never happen. I've heard too many people say that, compared to the rest of the Straw Hats, Zoro is poorly developed because he doesn't change much (other than getting stronger) throughout the series. I call bullshit. A character doesn't need to go through some arch; or change his worldview/principles, to be interesting or complex. Zoro's defining trait, to me, is his steadfastness and devotion to his captain and crew. Zoro has taken it upon himself to be THE defender of the Straw Hats, even if he has to claw and scratch his way to the front line to shield them from the threat. He incapacitated Sanji because he was angry that Sanji thought they could ever replace him with someone else. He took all of Luffy's suffering without hesitation. All while never wanting attention or praise for his sacrifices. Zoro isn't an underdeveloped character: he's an aspirational one. He's not untouchable: he takes a beating time and time again, but will not stay down as long as one of his crew is in harm's way. When you have a series so jam-packed with hundreds of eclectic and outright crazy characters, you need someone like Zoro to help keep the focus. To have someone, who is so stoic and determined, show so much faith in Luffy, who many would write off as a goof, shows how insightful Zoro really is because he doesn't just see Luffy's potential: he KNOWS Luffy has what it takes to be the new Pirate King. To me, Zoro's easily one of THE best characters in all of manga/anime.

The problem is not the "hype" moment but the cheap way of attaining it. Nobody dies, people get plot armor and things are illogical. too illogical.
