Total defeat. Yeah they aren't dead, but with how large the One Piece world is there's no telling how long it might take to find each other again. The journey has been totally shut down. Sure Kuma saved them from death by Kizaru, but this whole journey so far has taken months to make this progress. Now it could take even more just to get back on track.

Luffy chose to flee because he learned his lesson as you saw on several occasions, esp in Water 7. His role as captain was tested and he made some mistakes on handling situations so hes now alot more focused on what decisions to make that will be the best for his crew. His Family. Its proof hes growing as a true captain

I was 12 when I saw this episode back in 2009. Waiting a week for a new episode back in the day when not many animes were airing like now was frustrating especially when it has a cliffhanger like this. I'm glad i started to watch one piece or anime in general at a very young age since I didn't have the intelligence to come up with theories or outcomes on episodes like these and was shock when stuff gets revealed.

This is a key moment for Luffy and the crew. It's all good and well punching a celestial dragon which was deserved btw. But you have to escape. You can't stick around. You pick a fight you cannot win. And this was how they showed that. Luffy and crew stands no chance against these guys at the top. And that has always been Luffy's issue. Picking fights that are difficult to win. It's brave yet stupid

I love the dynamic between Luffy and Nami and also Robin. Luffy is VERY protective of the women on his crew even more than the others because he knows they look up to him even more as their liberator. So seeing them vanish before his very eyes...would send anyone in a fit

One thing I really love about One Piece is that the Main Characters don’t become one of the strongest in the story straight away like how it is in something like Bleach for example Oda makes them go through a whole bunch of battles & hardship before eventually reaching the top of the food chain which in this case would be the Admirals, the Emperors & people around or close to that level like Mihawk & Kuma

Ron I think u get what us guys all get from that last episode. This is the episode that made me start working out. Luffy, as the captain of his ship, couldn't even save one member of his crew. Not one. Regardless of whether or not they are alive. He was weak. Thats the fact that was very real to him. As a guy, imagine not being able to save a single member of your family. That shit is demoralizing asf! I will never allow myself to become weak as long as I can do something about it. This is why One Piece is my favorite. Lessons like this hit home for me.

The thing about this arc, is that it takes you completely by surprise.. We just came off a high, from the straw hats defeating a warlord, surviving ennies lobby and getting their friends back. We are lead to beleive the strawhats are on top of the world and that they won't let the injustices they see continue to happen, only to get a reality check. The strawhats are no where near the top powers of the world, and Oda needed to remind us...

Excellent point. I don't think this is stressed enough in the show. It's mentioned maybe every 300 eps. They should remind us of the difficulties of navigating the Grand Line more often, especially for normal people with barely any navigation skills.

I actually remember feeling anger at luffy the first time I watched this. Until this point, I was used to Anime main characters awakening a super power or something when facing this level of pain and defeat (I grew up with Dragon Ball just to give an idea of what I am talking about), and I was expecting Luffy to do the same. And when he didn't I felt like this was against the rules, I felt he wasn't doing what he was supposed to and I was pissed. Then with time and more maturity I realised how real Luffy behaved and how relatable he was. In real life, when you are defeated, in pain and sad, no super power awakes in you. You are down, done. The real power is finding the strength to pick yourself up. So it was from this moment that I really started to like Luffy. He wasn't just one of the many shounen main characters anymore (goofy, smiley, silly, super eater, always with a solution, etc). He was different. He was someone I could relate to. He became my bro.

I still cry at this. Like Brooke just joined and bro is ride or die. Sanji n Zoro hate each other yet Sanji tried his best to protect him - even not listening to Luffy, Chopper feeling so helpless that he used his forbidden transformation to try and help. Luffy finally giving orders as a captain only for those orders to fail. Franky using what he thinks would best work on himself thinking px1 is the same as him but not work. Ussop had another moment to show he is a brave warrior of the sea only to freeze. Robin having the ability to extend her self by who knows how long only to be an arms length of reaching out to Luffy. Namis classic line of 'Luffy help me' getting cut short before disappearing. Zoro, when it counts hes never 100 percent and is always injured when the team need him but it shows how many times hes willing to die for the crew. I dropped OP for like bit after this because I was broken. Also, i think there was a break when this aired. Oda is the GOAT. And these are just the surface things, other YTbers probably disected this part lol

Ron was really coping the scene where Luffy broke down. That scene hit me too. These three episodes clearly show that while Luffy is strong, he's still not strong enough. He couldn’t even defeat a single Pacifista on his own. It took the combined effort of the entire Straw Hat crew just to take one down. The gap in power between Luffy and opponents like Kuma or Admiral Kizaru is overwhelming. His crew was on the verge of being completely wiped out by Admiral Kizaru, Sentomaru and the Pacifistas, if not for Rayleigh and Kuma's unexplained intervention. Currently, we don't even know if they are alive or not.

This is exactly why these 3 had to be watched together. Now you know. And Ron, I really felt what you were feeling while watching that. You got the situation correctly. This is nothing good… Luffy is in great despair and he has no clue what happened to his crew or where they went. The only thing he knows that he failed each one of them. And to think that only thing he could order them was to run at this point… is even darker. This never happened before. This shows just how strong his enemies are becoming, as he progresses deeper into the grand line and we don’t even know what to expect from the New World, hence the first half of the Grand Line almost tore them apart! After this episode, literally. I always get really sad watching these scenes. Can’t help it. Luffy feels so helpless and useless at this moment. And you know how confident and careless he usually is. And this feels like a huge breaking point for our main character. Anyways, Ron, loved your reaction as always! And totally felt you. Hope to catch the next drop to at least change the mood before sleeping . . .

Exactly, and even if you can navigate, that doesnt help much without a logpose/eternal Pose. You also only can go in 1 direction with a logpose so realisticly it would be veeeery hard to find someone randomly in the grandline

I remember watching these episodes before going to bed and it left me in such a depressive state I couldn’t fall asleep. I just couldn’t stop thinking about the helplessness of the situation and Luffy— the sequence of Luffy’s breakdown.. I cried and felt for him. Imagine seeing all of your cherished family one-by-one disappear in front of you and being too weak to do anything about it? Regardless if they’re not being killed, it’s still a bad outcome especially from the POV of someone who doesn’t understand why or where they’re vanishing off to. But DAMN dude, that’s my favorite MC (and character) 😢 it hurt so bad to see him like that… he’s always smiling 😭

I loved that you guys were speechless after the episodes. it’s truly gut wrenching and it doesn’t stop here. It was a crazy time back then when this was released weekly. My heart hurts every time I see these episodes and also when I see others reacting to it.

The whole part with the Kid and Heart Pirates vs the Pacifista was filler. Oda set up the fight, yet he never expanded on it in the manga. This is also why Kid was only using the same attack over and over again.

Yeah honestly I found their reaction refreshing. Dont get me wrong, I love people crying their eyes out at this episode, but that they clocked so fast that it was a mercy (Due to them certainly being killed if not) was very satisfying.

In hindsight of course we know everyone’s gonna be okay, but for luffy that’s really the first time he’s been powerless to save anyone. Cause what if Kuma wasn’t on his side? Then he would’ve basically killed everyone right there.
