Ah the old questions answered leads to more questions 😂 Many more mysteries to uncover and you aren't supposed to know certain things yet. But pay attention to the clues

Phyllis

The info so far suggests that Jinshi is either the son of the current emperor or his younger brother, due to a possible baby swap. However, at present, only the emperor’s younger brother is officially recognized, as the emperor’s son with Concubine Ah Duo is presumed to have died. This episode further supports that theory revealing that Jinshi is actually 19 years old, is deliberately suppressing his manhood, and is pretending to be "Jinshi," a 24-year-old eunuch. We still don’t know why he is hiding his identity, pretending to be a eunuch and managing the Rear Palace for the emperor. We also hear Jinshi’s inner thoughts, where he wishes the emperor would hurry and produce an heir. As for the assassination attempt, regardless of whether Jinshi is the emperor's secretly swapped son or his younger brother, he remains the next in line for the throne, since the current emperor still has no heir. Killing Jinshi means one less person for a concubine's son to compete with for the throne. Just to be clear, all this information about Jinshi is known only to us, the viewers. Perhaps those involved in the swap are aware as well, but at this point, MaoMao either doesn't know or keeps dismissing the idea to avoid getting into trouble.

Michelle, you're doing great! All of the theories that you guys are spinning right now are valid based on what we, the audience, know so far. The main thing to keep in mind is that Maomao and Jinshi are unreliable narrators in the sense that we, the audience, may know more and/or be willing to make certain conjectures that the characters are not willing to make (either based on the information provided to us thus far or based on information that they know but have not shared with us yet)... especially Maomao because she is someone with a very definite sense of "know your place" and "stay away from problematic rabbit holes unless you absolutely cannot." 😸

Maomao is hilarious 😂 Jinshi is so complex as a character but we getting somewheree For the question ‘who’ and ‘why’ about Jinshi, ‘who’ it’s there kind of😅 but ‘why’ there’s a part where he mentioned the emperor needs to birth a boy, and hence the care towards the concubines (is what I think just from this ep) fyi, this show really likes throwing viewers everywhere and won’t touch on things like episodesss later😂 but it’ll click when it does (typical mystery/detective shows)

I think that was a subtitle issue.. it wasn’t 10 years ago. It was 19 years ago. The show is definitely eluding to Jinshi either being the current emperor’s brother or son. Personally I think he is the son because he looks waaaaay too much like Concubine Ah Duo. Which means he would be next in line to run the Empire. Also one good thing to note with this show is to pay attention to what MaoMao questions. I’ve noticed a lot of times in this show MaoMao will bring up something that is slightly suspicious and it gets derailed by some other shiny plot point. The shiny thing seems important but it’s always there to hide subtle clues that MaoMao leaves. It also might be helpful to put together some type of family tree so you can keep track of what’s known and other possible scenarios.

Everything is vague on purpose. We’re supposed to have theories but never really know anything for certain. Many things aren’t fully answered for a long time

Joshua Lopez

You guys are doing a good job theorizing, I don't think you need us to help you out. I think you're putting together the pieces you're supposed to at this point.

지원

I can't wait next couple eps

Harun Hasan

also just realised middle aged guy is 29 years old in maomao mind

Yumaaa

Idk if you guys know. But Maomao's VA won best JP voice actor at the anime awards.

If Jinshi was a real eunuch he would look younger due to the lack of puberty (✂️). So pretending to be a 24 year old eunuch doesn’t just allow him to enter the rear palace, it is a cover for his true identity something - as you’ve just seen - that can lead to assassination attempts.

There is also something mentioned very early on in the show when we first meet Jinshi - that he is keeping an eye on all of the concubines, not just the top 4, to make sure they are loyal to the emperor. Also kind of why he gets put in charge of solving all of these murders/conspiracies/plots (Which he as of late, of course, has been deferring to Maomao)

Undeath Ghost

Maomao's favorite thing to do is Conjecture a possibility that makes perfect sense to us, the viewers... only for her to dismiss it because it's "none of her business" or "not her place" or "I don't care about that". I mean, case in point, she basically already had figured out that Suirei was the mastermind an episode or 2 ago... but instead of naming her she simply said all of the information that would lead to them finding her... so that she can't be attached to the execution of someone "in the name of the emperor", in her eyes.

big head means big brain

The next episode is my favorite. I find it funny when Jinshi is jealous or gets overly stressed by Maomao. 🤣🤣🤣

Michelle Lam

ty so much for this Phyllis!! Idk the rules for who is next in line for the throne, if a son to the emperor is born, does that knock the emperors brother to 3rd in place and the sone takes 2nd place?

JB

" eluding to Jinshi either being the current emperor’s brother or son", bruh. It's obvious now that he is both and he knows that. Why do you think Jinshi cired when Ah Duo left the palace? An emperor's brother would cry after his brother's ex concubine? lmao. Even tho he could never act as her son, just having her close by and being able to meet with her often as harem's manager was very important to him. Besides he literally says "He just has to make himself a new prince", a new, because the old one isn't considered a "next in line prince". Emperor can always reveal tho that Jinshi is his son at any point and make him the actual heir to the throne. (but my theory is that Jinshi doesn't want that, and he wants to create his own path in life). Jinshi is officially emperor's brother, and his true identity is most likely only known to him, Ah Duo, The Emperor and Empress Dowager, and I also think that Lakan knows that. He is just crazy intelligent and could figure it out, but that's just my theory.

This show is really good but I watched it in dub which helped me a lot in understanding what is going on cause they foreshadow a lot and they don’t say things straight forward so that leaves us as viewers to piece together what’s going on or find out later.

IcoNIC

Exact reason why I watch dub lol

Millie L

Yeah, I really wish people would stop demonizing modern dubs. A lot of people, unfortunately, get bullied out of watching them by sub purists. Dubs have genuinely reached a point over the past 5 years or so where they are honestly good and seemingly done by people who actually care now. Plus, nuance is typically easier to notice when you understand how people are speaking in a language you're fluent in and not slightly distracted by reading subtitles at the same time.

Ilsuk Yang

They really did leave a lot of clues to "Jinshi's" actual age. Maomao's always saying stuff like, "Oh, Jinshi looks really young there" or "Jinshi's acting really immature, but I like him better this way" lol. Maomao full-on evil laughing in front of everyone before catching herself is one of my favorite things 🤣🤣🤣 She's definitely intrigued by Suirei
