Yes, 2 different games. Maomao and Lakan are playing Chinese chess, not Go. Go is actually the Japanese name for the Chinese game weiqi, which uses blank black and white stones and is one of the easiest games to learn and hardest games to master. Chinese chess pieces use words on the marker to denote the value of the piece instead of using different shapes like Western chess. Instead of a king, Chinese chess centers around a general and the two "advisors" pieces are the closest to the general. Both versions of chess are derived from the original game that came from India. BTW, Shikamaru plays Japanese chess/shogi, which is a subsequent evolution of the game from the same branch as Chinese chess.

It tracks tho 🤓 ✨I'll remind ya'll of a nightmare Maomao had in episode 18 after the 2-minute mark: Fengxian with a knife in hand raised above her aimed & poised to bring it down at a crying baby Maomao, whose hand and little pinky were held out in position.

While it is not the healthy option, it is easy to blame yourself in a situation like what was depicted of Lakan here. In that situation, if you blamed yourself subsequently for more than a decade; you would likely develop some level of cynicism surrounding the events. In the original scene where Lakan informs Jinshi about the "way to reduce the value of a courtesan", he sounds malicious - yes. Or at least, it's perceived as such because up until last episode we had only seen Jinshi and Maomao's perceptions of Lakan. Now, with the story recontextualized, it's possible to discern that the maliciousness we sensed wasn't said "proudly" about his actions but rather "with disgust". He has taken others interpretations of his "actions" (out of his control) as fact instead of proving otherwise. Likely because of regret and guilt.

Lakan's uncle seems to be maomao's adoptive father. This is hinted at through the cane that he uses and the fact that he's a doctor. We also see his history of being a doctor that was cast out from the rear palace.

What's interesting to me is if Luomen knew who maomao was? Because maomao seemed to already know who her father is, but did she pick this up based on clues because she's smart, or did her adoptive father tell her? And Lakan seemed to also know exactly who she was from the start so I wonder how he found out, and also why he waited so long to interact with her considering how much he seems to care for her. My best guess would be guilt. There are some details I would love to know more about, but it does seem like he did not know maomao's mother is still in the Verdigris House.

*Not a spoiler, just pointing things out that Ron and Michelle may or may not go back to if ever* Maomao looked at her hand in like the 2nd or 3rd episode regarding true love, foreshadowing to this episode. The little finger in this episode is Mao Mao's. Even the dream Mao Mao had a few episodes ago about an old memory that she had as a baby where her mom uses a knife on her is reference to the small finger. This show requires a lot of attention and memory retention. It's easier if you actually just binge it, so it's understandable forgetting very small details here and there.

Imma just throw this out here none of that situation happens if Concubine Ah Duo doesn't make that decision with the baby swap, but its all speculation according to MaoMao... Lankan speaks that way about the situation because he hates himself for not realizing the situation, in his eyes it was such a horrible oversight it may as well have been intentional, at least thats my take

In Chinese chess, the Advisor/Guard piece (仕/士) is placed right next to the General(King) piece at the center of the board. It stays inside a certain space and moves only diagonally, showing its role as the first and closest protector of the General(King), like a royal guard for the King. It is definitely a higher position piece than Bishop piece.

To clarify, MaoMao is not immune to poison; however, she can tolerate small amounts enough to taste it without being harmed, as long as she doesn't consume a full dose. The game that MaoMao and Lakan played is called Chinese Chess. In contrast, the game Shikamaru plays is called Shogi, a different Japanese strategy board game. FengXian, MaoMao’s mother, excels at the game of Go(a different Chinese strategy board game), while Lakan is skilled in Chinese Chess. On the night of their bet, Lakan still chose to play Go which was FengXian’s specialty after knowing the terms of the bet and she ended up winning the match. Because of the terms of the bet, she was allowed to "take anything she wanted," and she chose to offer herself to him. Regarding the severed little finger, it was explained as a form of cursing someone. Two fingers were found in the pouch, one belonging to an adult, the other to a baby or child. As you saw, Lakan blamed himself for not realizing she was pregnant and ended up villainizing himself for all that she went through. Great job catching so many details in this episode! 🧐👍🏻 Can't clarify on the other stuff since it will be revealed sooner or later.😊

I think Michelle would love the light novel so much, try to read vol. 1-2 after watching season 1, youll get deeper into season 1 episodes 🌚 season 2 is up to vol. 4. also, the artwork is so pretty too! i also love the manga adaptation but the artwork in original light novel is sooo good. not to mention the novel includes so many details.

You saw the way the old lady was beating Lakan with the broom when he got back. She only told him "she's gone" nothing more and was beating him. That's why he was crying so much. All this time he was thinking she's dead.

Shikamaru played Shogi, a different game. They got the piece movements right too haha yall should learn it! It's a fun game 장기 in korean. The traditional rules may differ a little than how koreans play it. The one with black and white pieces is called 바둑 in korean and Go in english

I think Lakan would’ve considered choosing to play Chess (his specialty) as forcing himself on her because of the bet that they made. Which is what he means by “A terrible thought crossed my mind.” But when he chooses to play Go (Fengxian’s specialty) he’s basically saying she can have whatever she wants, which ends up being them conceiving MaoMao. And I think he feels so guilty about the whole situation that he paints himself as the villain when talking about it.

There's a great little piece of information when Lakan is first talking to Jinshi about his interactions with the courtesan who we later come to find is Fengxian. He says "While I could beat her at chess she would always beat me at Go". So when she lets him pick the game for their bet, he knows he can't beat her, so he's basically saying "I will give you whatever you want" without actually saying it.

This episode shows the emotional flagellation that Lakan performs on himself because of all that happened. He blames himself for everything since he doesn't know the full story. Such a sad story 😢
