Shinji's Bankai was never shown in the manga, so everyone freaked out when they added it to this episode. Thats why I think TYBW is the best arc adaptation ever made because they've not only done the manga perfectly, they've also added content at Kubo's direction that he didn't have time to add or clarify because he was rushed so much. While I do think the addition was nice, I don't think this is an instance where Kubo was rushed. Apart from the mechanics that add another layer to Shinji's character, it does not give us anything profound. So we could have done without it in a manga format, especially when you are struggling with health issues.

Hollows being poisonous to Quincies was hinted at in Cour 1 when Masaki was bitten and infected by White. And based on what we learned about Ichigo during the Final Getsugatensho and Blade is Me, we can understand why his Bankai could not be stolen, as his Soul Reaper powers are mixed with his hollow powers. So the only outliers are Vizards, as they already have hollow powers. However, the situation with Vizards and Ichigo is completely different. Vizards have a separate entity within them which they had to subjugate to gain the hollow mask. That's why the training Ichigo got from them was detrimental to him. Ichigo did gain a hollow mask, but he never needed one to use his hollow side, which he only learned during his training with his dad. That's why we were shown how Shinji also needed to take the pill to use his Bankai despite having a hollow within him, as, unlike Ichigo, his Shinigami powers aren't one with the hollow. Another interesting thing about Shinji is how the suitability of his Bankai and Shikai is essentially flipped, which is so in line with his character. His Shikai is suited to fighting strong opponents one-on-one, while his Bankai helps to clear out enemies in large numbers, which is usually the other way around for other Soul Reapers. Personally, I think stealing the Bankai was done for tactical reasons. It's essentially stripping the Soul Reapers of their trump cards, even if they are weaker in Quincies' hands. There is also another reason meta-narratively, as it signifies the actual N*zis stealing the Manji symbol from Buddhist history to turn it into a Swastika, similar to Quincies stealing it from Shinigami. After all, the word Bankai is written using the manji symbol. While it may seem like Komamura won due to his Jinka technique, it's a loss in another sense. After all, he lost his soul and agency, and in a series like Bleach, where identity is given so much importance, it essentially represents death. It's really good that Kubo portrayed death in another manner so that it would not become monotonous. Kubo is telling a story through Komamura that revenge is not good for you. Every single person who wanted revenge in the story essentially had a tragic end. Others like Tousen, Gin, Yamamoto, Barragan, Kaien, and so on all fell to the desire of revenge and ultimately died. Komamura was ultimately taken advantage of by his Great Elder. It represents a form of indoctrination as the latter wanted Sajin to return to their clan for his own benefit by taking advantage of Komamura's need for the Jinka technique. Funnily enough, in the case of Bambietta, we can infer that she was also indoctrinated, as she could not perceive the idea of dying for a cause, as to her, it's all about staying alive, no matter the costs. Komamura and Bambietta represent an aspect of fas*ism where they get indoctrinated to follow their fas*ist ideologies. That is one of the flaws of fas*ism (showing that there is no right cause in it), as the people who follow such customs could simply be following it due to their need. This is another cool way of showcasing characters' past without delving into their backstories, like in Bambietta's case. I think backstories are the easiest way to sell a point about such characters, but when you overdo it in a big cast like Bleach, it becomes monotonous.

Something you guys should know, Tite Kubo was rushed to finish Bleach while writing the Thousand-Year Blood War arc as he was given a one-year timeframe to conclude the story. His health was declining and he suffered from a fractured shoulder and requested for more time to end the series but unfortunately was only given a year. In a way the anime adaptation is a redemption for Kubo as it's his chance to tie and loose ends and add in all the cut content from the manga. Things like Shinji's Bankai in the episode you guys just reacted to is one example of something that wasn't featured in the manga but has been adapted into the anime. This means we will be seeing never before seen Bankai in the anime and Kubo even plans to rewrite some fights to make them less rushed and make more sense. Also, based on the popularity of the TYBW anime, Kubo has mentioned the prospect of animating the light novels (Can't Fear Your Own World) so that is practically guaranteed for the future after Cour 4 comes out. HYPE!!!

Man, I had such a rough day and I come back home from work to an early drop of Bleach! This episode with Sajin is one of my faves in cour 2. His story is so sad, yet so beautiful. Revenge is a feeling motivated by both anger and justice and honestly Sajin's (of which Tosen's is part of) is one of the best I've seen in anime. The upcoming episodes are gonna be bangers to, it doesn't slow down here. Also, to confirm what you two may have forgotten but still mentioned, yes - Ikkaku (the bald guy) has bankai and yes - he is 3rd seat. Oh, and another thing I want to mention... please check out "Burn The Witch" once you're all caught up with Bleach. It's made by the same author, really short and mirrors some things you enjoyed this episode, especially Michelle. :)

The only word I can use to describe TYBW is Beautiful. It’s such a beautiful anime. The animation, the story, everything. It’s just the culmination of everything we know about the anime all wrapped up in one beautiful package. It truly is a masterpiece on its own level. This is why I hate to compare the big 3 because they are all top tier anime in their own right. I love Bleach just as much as I do Naruto and One Piece.

[Tidbits] - The idea that Quincy's grudge against hollows is one based on fear of death is an important bit to remember, especially so since Yhwach is the foundation of what it means to be Quincy. - They stole the Bankai because the Captains rely on them, in theory they'd be far easier to defeat without it. Why fight 100% vs 100% when you can do 80% vs 50%. - This episode does great at showing just how dangerous Soi Fons Bankai is, many fans think her Bankai is weak for some odd reason. Many argue that it's too simple, which is the point Soi Fon is pretty blunt and straightforward and emotionally explosive as we've further witnessed throughout this arc.

[Tidbits] - Komamura and the Beast Clan are based on the Buddhist concept of "The Beast Realm" beings that are personified by their subservience to their instinctual and selfish desires. The appearance of the Beast Clan here in Bleach is due to a curse which is a punishment for the sins they've committed in life. - Sidenote: The surname Komamura was given to Sajin by Yamamoto - Here Komamura has given his heart, his very life for his cause, and in this case it's for revenge. This is a through-line setup with his conflict with Tosen, who he condemned for seeking revenge, and just like Tosen Komamura is left here an empty hollow man, which is a pretty potent message. (Komamura giving his heart is also a nod to his line when he was speaking to Tosen before he died. He said: "If I lost you, I would have a hole in my heart") - As noted, Quincy are depicted as angelic, they dress in all white and have wings when they use Volstanding, where as Shinigami are death gods who dress in all black, this speaks to the very gray nature of Bleach as a story and actually is a nice hint to larger lore implications. - Kubo-Sensei wanted to include the Irazusando theme in the manga, but due to certain restraints, he couldn't. So In the Blu-Ray we actually get to learn what this training actually does. [These are comments by the series director] : The Irazusando pathway tries to push people away from the stone road, the more one tries to resist the push, the heavier the bokuto (wooden sword) gets. Ichigo dragged his feet forward to not stray away from the stony pathway, and the pathway of Irazusando is actually 'cursed. As one walks through the Irazusando road, they are not supposed to look at the stone path, but focus on the torii-gate instead. Ichigo suffered because his gaze was on the stone. The heavier his steps became, the torii-gate turned whiter and whiter. The rain that falls outside makes the body decay, so if Ichigo had strayed off the road, his body would have rotted away. : Irazusando road is depicted as an 'Inka hall'. 'Inka' means a philosophical 'seal' in which obtaining the seal is considered to be the highest form of understanding of one's innermost soul. 'Inka' translates to 'transmission' in which a student receives his teacher's philosophies. Here, Ichigo's zen buddhist teacher is the monk, and Ichigo obtains the seal from Ichibe Hyosube, which is meant to uplift or evolve Ichigo's soul. [Sidenote: The Humanification technique has always been interesting to me, metaphorically it seems that to be Human means having desire yet the aspect that makes you a beast is giving into those desires despite knowing what harm may come from it.]

I do have another theory that plays into it but it's spoiler territory. But it has nothing to do with peace motif. That being said, your second question naturally plays into the Bankai stealing strategy as taking away the Bankai reduces the chances of death on Quincies' side.

The Quincy having no antibodies for the hollows makes sense now when you think about what happend to Ichigo's mom, remember that she almost die just because the hollow essence from white was embedded into her soul, and that is why that had to use Ichigo's dad, as both a Soul reaper and human agent to counteract it

They said it already in the first cour that the Soul Reapers tried to talk to the Quincies to not kill the hollows, because unlike the Shinigamis that killing hollows purify their souls and sends them to soul society, the quincies killing hollows erases their souls from existence, which will affect the soul balance between both the Soul Society and the World of the Living, which could lead to the collapse of both worlds, because there is supposed to be almost an equal amount of souls in both of them. But after trying to talk to the Quincies, they did not agree and continued killing hollows, that is why the Shinigamis had to try to kill all the Quincies 1000 years ago and finish off the rest 200 years ago, its kind of was a 'For the greater good' kind of thing.

The hollow problem is literally what happened to Masaki. A regular human can turn into a Hollow or pass on that "power" on to their child to make a Fullbring. Quncies just die. And Shinji's bankai is only useful in groups of enemies; 1 v 1 makes no sense because there are no allies to flip. His shikai works best 1 v1. My theory is that the reason why Ishida's dad told Masaki to go out only after the shinigami died. It keeps the Quincies safe and if the shinigami died that means the chance to purify the soul is gone so only then do they act.

Shinji has one of the coolest zanpakuto techniques in Bleach and he always gets the best OSTs. We had Escalon in OG Bleach and then this real smooth chill vibe for TYBW I love it. His bankai scene was so dope too. The wolf captain's name is Sajin Komamura. The clan doesn't have an actual name. It's just the wolfman/werewolf clan. Komamura's human form along with his bankai was so fire, love the whole story behind it. That was Rose's voice you heard at the end of the second episode in the poem. Rose is the captain with the long blonde hair that was next to Kensei, the other captain.

From the beginning of Bleach, Ron has always analyzed and predicted some very interesting thoughts xD Honestly pretty cool how engaged ya'll were with these 2 episodes. Cour 1 for me was the most intense with how different you realize this is to the OG Bleach and the reveals, trauma, and plot twists but although the following Cours aren't as intense, the quality doesn't drop at all.

Sajin didn’t know about the risk of the jinka technique. He thought it was a temporary boost old man dog tricked him. Elder wolf took pride in the clan revenge driven curse so he was proud Sajin acted on revenge. Elder dog is manipulative and takes pride of the clans curse not ashamed of it.

Other anime need multiple episodes to make me care, and he pulls it off in just one 👏 Your thoughts about the Soul King are quite interesting… Some things to keep in mind: During Aizen’s sealing, he called the Soul King a thing he doesn’t want to be ruled by. Urahara responded by saying the Soul King is basically the keystone holding Soul Society together. And also Ichigo’s “visions” during his Irazusando walk… just saying 👀

quincy voll stan dich is what quilge used, pretty much their own bankai, however the quincies couldnt use it while holding the bankais of the soul reapers. Once they were taken back, they were free to use it.

i guess i am gonna have to say again, but sadly don't read comments to avoid spoilers but ill say it anyways, hopefully in discussions someone will help them realize this so don't have to keep telling them. Ikkaku is a 3rd Seat he has a Bankai he is at a power level of a Lieutenant but he hides it his Bankai to avoid being promoted to a different squad cause he want's to stay with Kenpachi. Captains and Lieutenant's are the only ones capable of using Bankai not just Captain's and Ikkaku is the only one who is not those 2 ranks capable of Bankai. please try to remember this, love you guys

It's not a flaw. That is just u wanting something that is not the focus, but it would definitely be very interesting and make the world-building better. Would be cool as OVA or side stories tho. I think the manga has some other stuff like that. But I would not consider it a flaw, because it was never the focus and is not necessary for the overall plot.

Of the Big 3, Bleach has the 2nd best end arc after the ending of One Piece. If the Anime can do better than the manga's ending then this would be one of the greatest arcs in Shounen

If I recall correctly Kubo has actually confirmed that if Sajin had not committed to revenge in his heart (when he turned from using it to save his friends to targeting Ywbach), the jinka technique would not have ended. Not exactly sure if that means indefinitely or just until he could maybe replace his heart…? But regardless it’s very interesting how the intention of using the technique determines your fate.

Big brain Ron at the end I actually watched OG bleach when I was 17-18 so about eight-9 years ago. I personally think that’s exactly what they are doing. They’re searching for another soul king. What exactly is the soul can? I have a pretty good understanding but I still don’t really understand 100%. I will say Ichigo having literally every single bloodline in the show or race whatever you wanna call it. It’s like he was destined to be for something more and a soul king makes sense to me. That statement in the beginning, I was just trying to say I may have seen Blade years ago and have watched things on it, but I have no idea about this arc I actually didn’t know it existed until a friend told me who has read the manga. Besides that I don’t know anything besides one spoiler it’s a unique one as in it does not affect the storyline like me, knowing this doesn’t change anything, but I’m very curious to see it

@Castiel_O1x The reason I think its a great addition to the anime is that how many of us during the war against Aizen was asking where everyone's bankai was? Why weren't they fighting to their fullest against such a pwoerful enemy? Now that we're seeing Bnakai's like Yamamoto and Shinji we're understanding that these Bankai's could never be used near allies.

Shinji only used his shikai against Bambietta because his bankai wouldn't make sense in that situation. He tried to get her to call her friends over so that he could use his bankai, but he was defeated before that could happen. They should just just Shinji right into the middle of the enemy, run away, and let him use his bankai to destroy the entire enemy army lol. Too bad we didn't get his bankai in the TYBW manga. Kommamura falling victim to vengeance just like Tosen did is sad, but so understandable. He gained tremendous power for a short time in order to exact vengeance on Juha Bach, a vengeance he never even got to fulfill due to the short time limit on his modified bankai. His thirst for vengeance robbed him of his humanity and his agency and he didn't even get to attempt his act of revenge on Juha Bach 😢
