to be fair i just let oda cook while watching one piece cuz i know he will explain later the guy is a master storyteller so when something is confusing just let it be it will be explain sooner or later. also with the exaggerations it was toei studios not oda he didn't have the rebecca like that or most the female cast in some parts of the story the studio did that at the time for the younger audience teen boys thats what they said.

To defend Oda, the anime’s pacing made usopps situation much worse. It wasn’t as bad in the manga. But the payoff imo was still good regardless.

Don’t worry, Michelle. As a japanese person, I also find the way Rebecca is portrayed kind of weird. Scarlet and Kyros’s relationship feels a little weird to me too, but until a few years ago, the legal marriage age for women in japan was 16, so their relationship isn’t necessarily considered strange in that context.

As an Asian American, the age gap is very weird. But Im pretty sure other countries has diff perspective on age gaps. When watching stuff from other countries, you gotta ignore stuff like this which sucks when you were raised differently. For example, my aunt's husband niece who moved from asian country to america last yr has huge gap with her boyfriend. she is about 20 now and the age gap is like 9 yrs.

It's a fictional world with fictional rules. I know the age thing is something to be careful with in writing, but I find it hard to care when it's anime. As long as the character looks grown up, I can pretend I didn't notice their actual age difference. The story comes from a different culture. This won't work the same in live action tho. They will have to adjust their ages lol Otherwise, that lolicon type shit can burn and die and people into that can go along with it. "200 year old witch but looks like a 10 year old" type shit is disgusting. I love the story between Scarlett, Rebecca and Kyros. Usopp is a coward. We've always known. For him to risk his life for people outside of the crew, it was always going to take a massive push. If you respect him less after this, I do not blame you! We'll see if he earns it back.

Tbf tho if you go all the way back to the Roman period, girls were often getting married at like 12–14. Even in Romeo and Juliet, which is set around the 1400s–1500s, Juliet was only around 13 Yeah if that happens in 2026 it’s weird, but the whole idea of 18 being the standard age of adulthood only really got solidified in like the 1970s–1980s

Michelle's not wrong for bringing it up imo. Different cultures or not that age gap when they met is pretty weird man. There's also no reason she even had to be that age. Oda could've just as easily had Scarlet be in her early 20's or at least 18 and nothing about the characters or story would have changed. Same for Rebecca tbh. It's worth mentioning that Rebecca right now is 1 year older than Scarlet was when she met Kyros, and yet he considers her too young to fight as she's still just a child. So 16 is too young to fight but 15 is just right for a relationship with a grown man? C'mon now. Look y'all, I love One Piece too but it's okay to offer criticism where it's necessary. In my case, since they're all just fictional characters anyway I just pretend they're both adults. Like seriously, why not? Literally their ages don't affect the story in the slightest so you might as well ignore it for the sake of your enjoyment. If I can speak some uncomfortable truths; when it comes to this kinda stuff Oda is supremely hard to defend sometimes. But I give One Piece itself a pass because there's almost no honest reason for all these 16 year old girls to not be just a few years older than they are.

It’s worth remembering that for as good a writer Oda is, when it comes to numbers - he’s not the best. You’ll get to understand his creative process more reading the SBS, he sometimes says things randomly but because it’s him it becomes canon. It’s not just age - he does it with size too, they’ve had to change several character vivre cards over the years when they’ve realised the stats he’s gave doesn’t make sense 😅

I think in the manga she is 16 and he is 25. We may think it’s weird but in the majority of states 16 is the legal age and I believe it’s the same for all of Japan. It’s also not portrayed in a predator manner. I get the impulse tho.

Why are we acting like Oda didn't do some weird things with women before? If it was just that, sure, that did exist, and we don't have to pretend it didn't. You can include it in your story, but Rebecca has this very sexualised appearance, half naked. Yes, there's a reason given for it, but why did he have to design her like that in the first place? Storytelling-wise, you don't have to make a kid "sexy" to put her in the same situation she's in and make it pretty clear that she is forced to dress like that. I didn't read the manga, but Toei clearly animated her with this oily body, weird angles, the poses, for people to lust over a 16 yo, and that's not the first time. Shirahoshi, or not the same, but when Sanji casually grabbed Nami's boobs at Punk Hazard when he had the occasion and seemed ready to share with others. Personally I think it's just a drawing, so I don't really care. But come on, let's not act like there's nothing suspect about it. And this time he creates a relationship with a minor. I can totally see why Michelle would feel that way, given this pattern of "borderline things" with women and more recently, 16 yo girls. So we can question his intentions, given all of this beforehand. Surely, a woman reacting to that would feel uncomfortable.

this could be phrased better. It is nicer not to call people things, or point fingers than to make your point. Customs and culture were different in Japan a hundred years ago. And marriages to children under the age of 18 by older men 20 and sometimes 30-40 years older was not uncommon. Rather than pointing this out, you chose a more confrontational tone.

The other thing with Rebecca's age that you should know is, (I was curious as well to why Oda showed her as a 16 year old...) Not that I agree with it, because I grew up in America too but the age of sexual consent in Japan is 16 now, but was increased to 16 from 13 only in 2023 so different cultural norms and history associated with it

Sexualising minors is not just for the sake of art. Naturally, a woman would feel uncomfortable seeing the same author doing that, and also involving minors in relationships with adults. Honestly, as crazy as it sounds, there are still several states in the U.S. that have the legal age for marriage as 15 or no age limit at all, as long as you get parental consent. It really rattled me when I learned that, but child marriage is basically still condoned by law in some states.

My problem with Usopp is the fact that he genuinely shouldn’t be part of the crew. He has had some cool moments, but he is a liability to be around, is a pathological liar and will turn his back on you when you need him most. He’s done it multiple times. What value does he bring to the table? He could hammer and nail some boards before Franky became part of the crew but that’s about it. The anime gives him his uncanny sniping ability, but in the real world, this genre of human being is someone you should get far away from, because at the very least… if you make it out… he’s going to be in a bar telling stories as if he was the hero that saved the day. No bueno that is.
