For how diverse the show actually is, black people really do get the short end of the stick for characters.. plus i think even today Japanese people can be pretty racist so cant do much about that

Toriyama was always great on random names being so simple but iconic. Shirts and clothing just randomly saying Bulma, a pink shirt and a plain red shirt with the word Tacos

@271katbest I was referring to the disney depiction of Africans. I always hear that Japanese animators saw Disney as inspiration but ye ur right. Iā€™ve seen the drawn colonial propaganda from the 19th century as well. But animation didnā€™t exist back then. Donā€™t even have to do those kinda logical gymnastics. Lincoln was racist by standards of his own time. Frederick Douglass, Denmark Vesey, and Martin Delaney are all abolitionists who were his historical contemporaries. Not to mention the hundreds of years of slave resistance that happened before. That reality negates the ā€œthey canā€™t be judged by the standards of their timeā€ argument unless black people arenā€™t to be taken seriously as credible knowledge producers. Not attacking you I just come across that argument a lot and I love reading history. On another noteā€¦.i have a history paper saved in my phone that supposedly goes into commodore Perryā€™s first expedition to Japan. He may have had blackface performers on his ship with him. It tracks for 1850s America. Itā€™s called ā€œBlackface Minstrelsy and the Theater of Empire, 1838-1860.ā€ Not peer reviewed tho.

As you can see the dub takes a lot of creative liberties that end up working in comedy episodes like the ridiculous accents , a detail that was kind of left out is that Oolong is younger than Bulma which is why he was only after the kids. Without that context he looks like the second coming of Roshi

Youā€™re right to ask about black ppl in the show Michelle lol and you better be ready cause youā€™re not gonna see that many now and when you do theyā€™ll literally be caricatures of black peoples sometimes getting close to what we could see during minstrel shows so yeah

Michelle just said she likes the chill vibe animeā€™s and thereā€™s nothing wrong with that. Bleach, One piece and others require a lot more energy to watch because of the adrenaline dumps and intricate story telling. Dragonball is great because at this point itā€™s easy to follow and just fun to watch.

This is one of the many reasons I love dub. Just hearing the different accents is such a nice touch mixed with the comedy is hilarious. Early DB has such a charm
