each kanji has an on-yomi and kun-yomi. basically, various ways to read that one kanji (one's based off Chinese pronounciation and other is Japanese) and sometimes it'll have more than two ways so the referee wasn't familiar with how Goku's name was pronounced. an example is 白. It can be read as Haku, Byaku, Shiro, or Shira. it then depends on how it's being used and where it is in the structure. 白紙 - haku shi - blank page 白夜 - byaku ya - midnight sun 白い - shiroi - white 白髪 - shira ga - gray hair

please for the love of god switch to original version (japanese) for DBZ, with the original soundtrack. the american version, besides having way worst voice actors, they changed the music completely and is totally soulless compared to the original japanese version.

Japanese characters can be pronounced many many ways. Son Goku are the same characters as Sun Wukong. The famous character dragonball's premise is based on. english translatiors i dont think understood how to convey that joke. closest we have in english is Aaron = Ay-Ay-Ron
