I am a big supporter of "Death of the Author." The idea that my work should speak for itself and be left up to interpretation. However, I don't think that when they thought up this idea, they ever expected stories to be released in the fashion I am releasing them. Because everyone has already played through a version of this story, there are certain preconceived notions about where the story is going and who the characters are supposed to be.

However, the game has restarted, as most games do at some point in development. Recently, I was reading a game dev book where the upper management told a team to completely change the main character 2 months before they were due to reveal the game at E3. Wild things happen during game dev, and one of those things happened to me. But while those devs get to make changes in secret, I make them in front of all of you. Because so many of you have seen the older iteration of Jeze, and may be confused (or interested), I felt I should revive the author, if just for a little bit. At the end of the day, you all are my shareholders and my investors. You should be clued in on what is happening and why it is happening.

So, what is up with Jamie, and where is Jeze?

One of the big reasons I wanted to restart the story is that I didn't know where it was going when I first wrote it. I was guessing. Writing scripts after overtime shifts, waking up at 2 AM to break down pallets on a frozen truck to eventually get off work, and shuffling to the local coffee shop to write for an hour or so until I went home and passed out. The game and the story didn't capture my full attention. How could it? But once you all supported me so I could go full-time, I started to give this game my full, undivided attention.

That's when I realized I fucked up.

When we first encountered Jeze, I wasn't thinking about him that much. I didn't know who he was, what his story was, what his personality was. He was just a "bratty waiter who is also a prostitute." Later, when writing Episode 3, I started to figure him out. Then, he was sidelined pretty hard for the rest of the game. Mr. Noto, who was originally just "Owner," then became Jeze's villain, who then became the villain. Why have two villains when you can have one?

So while Jeze has sat on the sidelines, I've been trying to figure him out. What his story is, who he is, and how I could make him a better character. The answer came to me when we started the reboot. I realized this was my chance to take another crack at Jeze. To really give him the love and attention he deserves. And also, to introduce him in a new light.

When Jeze is introduced, he is sort of shown in this pretty evil light. If you try to pursue him, you'll get a 'game over'. This immediately told a lot of players, "Oh, don't pursue, got it." Which was not my intention. I wanted to give everyone a sneak peek at him, since you can do those same lewd scenes in the next episode if you go back to the restaurant. But first impressions are everything. Jeze was already seen as this game-over-inducing, evil femboy who wanted to make you cheat on the main love interest.

This issue really came to light when free roam opened in Episode 6. So many people are saying, "Why is Jeze mad at me?" and then finding out that, after they encountered him in Ep 2 and got a game over, they never talked to him. This told me that people were avoiding Jeze. And I get it. Re-reading his conversations, yeah, he is a bit abrasive and bratty. He gives you a game over and is delighted that you are cheating on your date. Then later, when you try to get to know him, he charges you for your time.

During the new writing phase, I built him back up from zero and reimagined him.

Now, instead of meeting him as a prostitute, you meet him as his real self. Jamie. Obviously, Jeze was not his real name. I picked it because I thought it was a pretty clear "work name". I actually wrote a scene in the Ren'Py build to allude to this, but the other day I went to take a screenshot of it and realized it never connected to the rest of the game. It was just sitting in the code, unable to be read.

Meeting him as Jamie instead of Jeze fixes some problems. You are no longer a mark. You aren't a customer. You're a nice guy that he met at a bookstore. The power dynamic is equalized; before, you had the upper hand, even if you didn't want it. Meeting Jamie instead of Jeze means you see him for who he is first. This will make the reveal more interesting later.

Will this change things later on? Of course. Jamie/Jeze will not act the same if he already has a connection to Isaac. Not to mention, you'll be able to see Jamie again before meeting him as Jeze in Episode 2.

That said... I do like having a more abrasive, corrupting femboy who acts like Jeze used to. Maybe even more nefarious and conniving. One who enjoys working for Noto instead of hating it. I mean, I wrote Jeze like that the first time around because it was fun. But it isn't Jamie. Maybe it will be someone else?

I hope this cleared up some questions you may have. Obviously, I don't want to tip my hand here, as I want you all to enjoy the story.

We can have a further discussion here or on Discord if you want!

In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the build and Stay Rad!

I wrote this post a month ago and sat on it, waiting for everyone to hate the Jamie change and question why I would do such a horrible thing. But everyone seems really chill? I still thought it would be fun to share my thoughts on WHY I changed Jeze :D

Henry Sigman

I do find it interesting that Jeze is a working name, since it just read as a weirdly spelled name. A tradighdy if you will. I am glad that she is getting a second chance. I will say, she was a necessary villain in the old story before chapter 6, if you were going for a monogamous relationship though. I do hope that the new version of the story does allow for the idea of picking one girl though. I mean, harems are nice, but I always want a good love story too.

MegaSparlan

Having a lot more of background with Jeze it's amazing, I've always loved the character and understood why he was that way, but the changes is like getting fresh air from an amazing character, I really hope to see what he will become in the future

RadLord Studios

Jeze is short for Jezebel, which to me is a very clear working name because why would someone name their son Jezebel? I never wanted him to be a villain, but it just happened through poor planning. Now, he can be seen in a positive light :D

Rhyst

i enjoy the change, thought it was something along the lines of "character was something im not happy about development wise but i really like the design" so it got reused and is even cuter as jamie :D

RadLord Studios

Yeah I think introducing him in a less hostile, cuter environment is WAY better. Even with this, I saw feedback where people thought he was a gold digger so I guess the work is not done xD

Jmmj

👍🏽

Tyrone

I kind of suspected but its nice to have it confirmed

This was legit a change for the better. I'm still not crazy about the new characters before you meet Hazel, BUT the additional context and early intro to Jamie is SO GOOD. Like, seriously, it kinda justifies doing it over from Episode 1 alone, on top of the new additions.

RadLord Studios

Thank you!!! The Jamie change is adding more dev time to these early episodes but I think its very worth it

sockideal

I've been loosely following development for awhile and I do really like this direction for him, as for awhile I thought like the game over was sorta just a small branching path added and that he wasn't really meant to be a main love interest

RadLord Studios

Exaaactly. I knew I messed up since people were surprised he was a main love interest xD

Erisistible

Honestly I am glad for this change, it did feel kind of weird to cheat on the person you move to an entirely new town for, so I didn't do it, and was confused why Jeze stayed mad I'm glad Jamie got rewritten

Eternal_Savvy

Having played 0.15.4.1, I have to say I can't wait for more of this version of Jamie! I'll admit I was a little skeptical on account of my personal enjoyment of characters with rougher edges, but it's clear you intend to keep those parts of him and expand upon them! Love his new look though I really hope to see him with those pigtails again as well! Though I admit I am biased xD I was already very intrigued by him when he was Jeze in the RenPy version of the game, now I am very keen to see the deeper parts of his personality that you're hinting at! I'll be honest, you've consistently impressed me with your writing (in case writing a whole article about your game didn't give that away already lol) and I cannot wait to see more of this Jamie! Especially as a more "dominant" force in the story :P

Jabermania

Well, we still have Ashlee as an abrasive, bratty, corrupting femboy

RadLord Studios

Well, they aren't going to be fleshed out characters. They are just fun cameos to sleep with.

Jabermania

Watching some videos with Ashlee and then sleeping with him is all I need in this life

Malick Lee

Very cool! My own position is not so different to how yours was, very relatable, and I love to write also.... so very inspiring! I would say this sort of post or information sharing is fantastic. Obviously I assumed Jeze was no more and this was an entirely different character, so this explanation and insight is great. Certainly I would have been a player that steered clear of Jeze as much as possible, as you explained. And also I have been in the position of dating in that way, where she did that kind of work, but we met outside of that, and of course that is the preferred circumstance for a proper relationship. All very sound decision making, lol. Have a great day! Hopefully I can make it to the YT live session. (Obviously the primary question would be the realistic eta for the end! =)

Nörther

Didn't you give this exact same problem to Charlene though?

RadLord Studios

Not at all. Charlene doesn't give you a game over. She doesn't try to get you to cheat on your date. She's juat a messy girl looking to fill the loneliness for a night.

Nörther

Going with her does makes Max dislike you though?

RadLord Studios

Max is feeling a lot of things. He's upset he didn't shoot his shot. He's a bit jealous of Charlene. He feels bad for both Charlene and Isaac. Sure, it cuts off the possibility of Max's route but you weren't together and its no where close to what OG Jeze did to Hazel.

Nörther

Yeah, I still wish we could have had that dance, and maybe still spend time with Max as well. Maybe it is because I tend to spend a lot of time with those kind of people

RadLord Studios

Well, I'm trying to teach the player that you can't have everything. You're not going to be able to do watch every scene in one playthrough. The Galli is a microcosm of the whole game with Charlene representing Hook Ups and Max representing Love Interests.

Seeing into this part of the dev process is very interesting
