Hello everyone! It's been a while since I shared a photography tutorial here. My previous shooting schedule was quite packed, and combined with some personal setbacks, it caused delays in post-production. As a result, the progress of my physical photography courses was pushed back. So, I thought I'd take this opportunity to share some tips on how to guide models during a photoshoot using text:

The most important and crucial aspect is "comfort":

It's essential to ensure that the overall atmosphere and environment of the shoot make both the model and photographer feel comfortable. Creating this atmosphere can be as simple as using music. Many times, when working with models for the first time, initial conversations might feel awkward. Background music can help fill in the gaps during these interactions. Of course, respecting the model's boundaries in speech and body language is also a key element of creating comfort. Avoid making inappropriate comments or jokes about the model's appearance or actions. Instead, offer encouragement and praise to help the model reach the desired state.

I usually dedicate the first ten minutes of the shoot to help both parties get into the right mindset. It's important not to rush for results, as patience is necessary to create great work.

2.  Setting the "context" to convey emotions:

Establishing the right mood for a shoot is crucial for portrait photography. Humans are emotional beings, and if the model's assumed mood doesn't match the desired mood in the photography, the image might feel disconnected. Setting the context isn't as simple as saying, "Give me a fashionable look," or "Show me a sad expression." Providing a detailed description of the desired mood or even a character can help the model connect more effectively. Of course, this advice is more relevant to amateur models. Professional models might need only simple instructions to achieve the desired outcome.

3.  Providing accurate "instructions" is an art:

Giving specific and clear instructions is essential. For instance, "Turn your head slightly to the left" or "Place your hand on your waist," and so on. If possible, demonstrating the pose yourself can be even more effective. This is why many portrait photographers can convey sensuality better than models themselves! If poses involve constant motion, asking the model to walk forward, turn around, look back, or even play with their hair while in motion can lead to interesting shots when captured in continuous mode.

These are some basic insights. If you're interested in learning more, feel free to ask questions in the comments section or recommend the post to your friends who might be interested. You can also join my upcoming live photography course for hands-on experience!
