Hi friends,

I often receive requests about this technique I use in my arrangements so I prepared this little lesson about "rolled chords".

What is it?

The notes of a chord can be played in two ways. We can play them simultaneously, and this is the block chord, or we can play the notes with a quick arpeggio, this is a rolled chord.

What is it for?

I use them as an ornament, I play them to make the chord more musical and harmonious but there is also an important reason. Playing a rolled chord allows me to highlight and bring emphasis to the note of the melody, which is the highest of the chord.

How you do it?

You just have to perform a fast arpeggio from the bass to the high note of the chord. If your fingers are agile you can do it easily, otherwise you have to train by first playing the arpeggio very slowly, and then trying to speed it up.

At the end of the video I show you how to roll the chords slowly and then a little faster.

Good playing!

Great technique and control Nicola! What is your recording set-up consist of? The balance of low/hi is perfect with a nice warm tone. I am a new follower, and perhaps you've covered this question in previous posts, that you could direct me towards. Thanks for sharing your playing and teachings. Am enjoying lots of the material. It's been Covid therapy, for sure (as the MT-BC in me, speaks).

Thanks for the useful skill lesson Guitar Nick! I try to mimic the rolled chords when watching you play and I really appreciate your lesson.

Love rolled chords. I appreciate how your lessons are always a pretty little song instead of a boring technique.

Hi Terry, thank you very much. Over the years I have always tried to improve my sound, in the past it was not as good as it is today. To record I use the guitar pickup on the left channel and the Audio-technica pro 70 mini-mic for the right channel. I connect everything to a Focusrite Scarlett sound card and record with Sound Forge Pro Suite 15, it has good equalizers to balance the sound and also some beautiful reverbs that I have been using for about 2 months. That's all Regards.

I really struggled with rolled chords until you put this lesson out. So simple after you explained the mechanics, I was struggling and avoiding the songs that included them - thanks
