The fourth quarter is finally here and we're moving towards putting a bow on 2024! It's the perfect time to ask some big picture questions of our resident financial expert, Michael Pachter!  As you may or may not know, we just launched a new spinoff of the show called Pachter Factor LIVE. This show will be recorded live every Friday and will tackle the biggest story from the week. So going forward, Pachter will be sharing his opinion in a much more timely manner, but we still need your questions for the second episode for each week! Here are some topics worth considering:

PlayStation's Concord has been one of the biggest flops in the history of video games and puts PlayStation's game as as service strategy in jeopardy. PC players keep review bombing PlayStation games over a login requirement. The PlayStation 5 Pro failed to sell out. Rockstar Games was chided for lowballing an artist over song licensing for Grand Theft Auto VI. Astro Bot launched to sky high review scores, but a lukewarm reception from PS5 owners at retail. Star Wars Outlaws has sold well below expectations for Ubisoft. Sony has increased prices on its controllers, some games being remastered, and hardware in some territories. Rumors from reliable sources are stating the next Xbox (and an Xbox handheld) will launch in 2026 for the 25th anniversary of Xbox and Halo. A new Tony Hawk's Pro Skater is in the works. It appears that future consoles will include a disc drive as an extra option that will cost more if at all. It was recently revealed that Xbox spends over $1 billion per year to bring third-party games to Game Pass.

As usual, try to ask some questions that will be interesting both now and a few weeks from now. If you want a more thorough refresher of all the big stories from the last month use this link:

The show is only as good as your questions so we truly appreciate the time you take to provide thoughtful and intriguing queries. Without you Pachter Factor would cease to be.

Hey Pach! Is videogame M&A dead? It feels like someone would have made a play for Ubisoft if their price weakness happened a few years ago. Is there just too much uncertainty in the market?

Hello Pach! With Concord in the news lately for a variety of reasons, one of the more interesting and contentious reports is that the game cost $400 million to make. It's not clear if this number is accurate, but if it is, is this the kind of report that would cause investors to actively question Sony's GAAS strategy or demand management changes?

The PS5 Pro Anniversary edition sold out right away but the normal version is still in stock even before selling at the big retailers. It seems a lot of people were more interested in the design of the Anniversary sku. Why didn’t PS produce more of them or at least give people the option to buy those plates for the console? What drives decisions like these?

Hey Pach! You actually answered a question recently from me regarding the relationship between first party studios and their respective parent companies. I have a follow up question, given that these studios are operated as independent businesses within the publisher, what is the actual incentive for them to be taken in as a first party developer rather than continue to be a third-party developer? Is it just a question of funding, or potentially having a larger parent company allows a certain degree of safety if a creative risk falls flat on its face. As we have seen recently, it seems like some publishers are opting for closures rather than to continue to fund the studios (I.e. Tango and Microsoft)
