Chapter 54: In Sheep's Clothing, part 9

Delphi was ready to leave - she had saved up quite a bit of money by living frugally in a pod hotel in Upper Zakera, enough to make a go of it at some human colony in the Sirius sector. And for a while now, Delphi had felt the need to leave, for her friends had, as of late, been behaving curiously, in that subtle way that built up fright and paranoia in her heart over time.

Her heart was just about ready to explode when Adam Jensen had come in to talk to her, about some turian coming in to eat here once upon a time. She had told him all that she could, which was very little, since Turians rarely ate Levo food. She did, however, tell him that she served a dish to an old, dark turian a few days ago, and that he had asked for the left-overs to be put in a container for another time.

This had satisfied Jensen, who had taken his leave, but not before giving Delphi his contact info, should she recall anything else that might be important in his investigation.

It had been hours after that, when she returned to her pod room, and Delphi had not wanted to contact him. After all, he had put her boyfriend Rudy in prison, though Mama — that's what the girls like to call Vina — had assured her that Rudy had brought this on himself. She was surprised, then, when she found herself tapping Jensen's number. She didn't quite understand why, but Ramsus did.

She desperately needed someone to talk to.

And then she had told him, told him how Vina had been behaving strangely, and with each passing day, so did the other waitresses. Then the teasing had begun, the subtle allusions to Delphi's weight, or shape, or nose. Business cards were being slipped in her locker. Then things had escalated, the girls had become more hostile, and then she had caught one of them slipping something into her drink — a hundred years of dealing with rowdy businessmen had taught her to be wary of such things Someone's knocking aT mY door Goddess no please no—

Ramsus stopped listening to the echoes, before he experienced the really nasty part.

"Well?" asked Yang. "What have you observed?

Ramsus came up with some rubbish worthy of Arthur Conan Doyle, plausible enough to make it sound like he had gleaned the fact that this was not the scene of the crime.
