If you could ask any Rocco and Derrick any video production/editing questions… what would they be? Ask here and maybe they’ll answer them in something soon…

Cam Nitro

What are your must haves for editing?

Hayden

Jeffrey Mizrahi

How do you edit 4K footage locally on a mid tier pc? My computer gets slow as shit and wont even preview a 2min clip at a consistent 60fps in Adobe Premiere. Do I just give up on film making in general or buy a more powerful PC?

Longest editing session in one sitting?

masterquest91

Sometimes I get a great idea for a scene or shot, and I just can't fit it into the final product, even when it's filmed to expectations. How do you discern between making a desired scene fit into a video, leaving it for bloopers/dx, or cutting the content altogether?

Jared Silva

What does your post production workflow look like? What editing, asset managing, or reviewing services do you use? What's a typical turnaround look like? I'm heavily involved with post in the tech world for my work and a big fan of your work, so I'd love to understand your process.

Mehdi Shah

When do you know when to stop editing a video? Does it just feel right or is there a soft deadline to finish something?

Vincent Estrada

For videos shot in public is there like a staging period of like of what place you are going do it and how long to go for before you stop being in character. Like is it just like 5-10 minutes of one or multiple of you just interacting with people or is it like a set thing or time to see if you go into the next location/stop filming or is it when you get the reaction you want.

Izzy

What has been your favorite editing software to use?

James Bath

What kinds of videos are harder or easier to edit than others?

Dubious Food

Are there any tricks you guys have learned over the years during editing to help shape or build your characters?

That Chipmunk

Have you done any projects you were unhappy with that you felt were saved in editing?

Brendan K

Any time saving and workflow tips or secrets while video editing? I've started editing video as a side gig, and I've noticed it taking an inordinate amount of time sometimes to execute my 'vision'.

A T

I've always seen Rocco as very improvisational whereas Derrick I see as more reliant on structure and pre-planning. Do conflicts ever arise from your respective approaches, and if so how do you overcome them? How do you decide on whose philosophy to lean towards?

Jacob Jones

What is the one video you wanted to make the most that you could never pull together due to circumstances?

Blake Barnett

What’s the most memorable video shoot you remember?

Hawk9600

If you found an editor that you felt had a good grasp on your style, would you prefer to offload your editing work onto them? Or do you enjoy doing it yourself? Also, do you prefer shooting with natural light, or do you like having more control over your lighting/filming in a studio?

Matrixman92

Has there been a memorable video that you hated while creating/editing, but the public loved it?

Kenko

how many terabytes is the whole internal mega64 data archive at this point (raw footage, editing files, everything else), and how organised or disorganised is that whole collection? also, suffered any bad data losses like harddrive/memory card failures? hows your backup setup?

Ken Vaughn

What have been some lessons learned from working in your previous studios/offices?

Sebastian Kazenbroot-Guppy

What kind of camera should I get to make an indie film, when I have literally zero experience?

Mike Colosimo

What is your storage system like for footage? A bunch of external hard drives? A NAS? Something else in between? I'm curious since I deal with this a lot at my own video production company and it seems you find stuff in "the vault" a lot

Mike Colosimo

I'm also curious how the actual structure of Mega64 works. You probably can't/don't want to go into it too much, but are you all owners Mega64? I know you've mentioned in the past that taxes are a pain in the ass there. My LLC has been looking to move to an S Corp because of that. I guess thats half statement half question, whatever

Chastisedghoul

Where does chaos, both in the acting and editing fall on your hierarchy list of what makes a video funny one of my favorite aspects of mega64 videos is how chaotic they can be and is it always intentional? Or does it happen by accident and surprise you with how it elevates a video?

Logan

Check out "proxy" editing. You can run a conversion of all your footage to potato-quality overnight, then link the clips and edit in a smaller res.

Red

Have there been any videos during editing that you have found you don't have the actual shots you wanted or what you have shot just isn't coming together correctly? Have you just went back and done reshoots or have there been times where you drop the project at that stage?

Logan

How often do you abandon a video idea, when? In pre-shoot, mid-shoot, or in post? What are common reasons why an idea get tossed?

Ross Wood

Does sleep deprivation help with editing videos?

SuperFreq

What's the most satisfying video effect you've ever pulled off?

Mary and Steve

Would you be open to showing or explaining your dvd/blu ray authoring process?

RocketPig

What’s the most common mistake you see other people make when filming or editing?

Kevin Hogg

What are some specs you recommend for someone looking to get a laptop for video editing.

B3rserk_Paints

How do you guys balance your time management? I’m curious if one takes up a bigger chunk of time compared to the other.

Vanessa Hawkes

How do you approach reshoots? What's your threshold between "we can work around it in editing" and "there's no way we can use this?"

Ryanbates7

Who typically handles production sound on set? Do you record the boom straight into camera or separately using an audio mixer, syncing the sound later? Do you use lavaliers?

Cameron Thomas

What's the biggest challenge you usually face in the production process?

shrewbu

As a fellow video editor, something I've been curious about is how you balance your original concept for a video vs putting it together in the editing room. I would guess there's been times where some major changes happen based on the content you captured, especially with the hidden camera stuff.

Kino Kowboy

I’m just interested to know specific cameras you guys use like podcasting vs short film vs out in public skits and what lav mics you guys recommend, etc.

Austin

I’ve been wondering about this too — I used to use Adobe Encore all the time to make DVDs and Blu-Rays but since adobe discontinued it, I’ve been at sort of a loss for what to do! Is there other software now?

Austin

This is a really interesting question I’d be interested to hear more about actually

vEisDe4d

What is a way of video editing/shooting that is a reference to another work that no one would ever think about? For example, Derrick mentioned how the ending of Version 3 (Shawn’s dad killing everyone) is shot in reference to a specific western.

C.D. Jones

Mega64 has always had a specific style/flair to not just its videos, but live shows as well. Is the "style/flair" of a Mega64 production a deliberate and conscious decision, or does it just come second nature in the filming/editing process?

Watto

tbh just use your phone audio equipment is way more important

Watto

I was watching the commentary on the Mega64 Time to Take a Long Hard Look Blu-ray, and throughout it, you guys kept saying you had to remove some parts due to music. Have you been dealing with copyright issues with the DVDs and Blu-rays you've put out? Are you looking to avoid these issues entirely going forward? or deal with it later when they get put out on physical media for the sake of the joke on youtube?

Watto

Since graduating college last year, my friends and I have been releasing skits and videos almost every week as part of Nondescript Video Club (cheap plug). At times, we feel burnt out from juggling this with our day jobs in video production. However, we know if we stop for too long, it might all come to an end. Ultimately, we really enjoy the creative outlet and have been seeing growth lately. Recently, we've started attending filmmaker meetups and entering contests to get more direction for some of our videos. This approach provides us with external ideas and deadlines, which has helped reduce burnout. I was wondering if any of you have done any production exercises or activities to alleviate creative burnout while continuing to move forward.

Mickey staver

You guys taught yourselves how to shoot and edit videos. What are you most proud of having taught yourselves over the past 20 years?

Joe Dean

What programs do you use for editing? What's some more affordable equipment you would recommend? Any books, videos, or anything you would recommend for some basics of filming?

DimmieDim

What do you admire about each other's editing styles?

MikeOShay

Where do you guys get background music from? What's the longest in advance you've planned out a skit, and the shortest?

Dee

Any advice for color correction/grading and VFX? I’m so impressed with how your videos look and the VFX within them (especially Derrick’s music videos). I really want to be a well-rounded editor like you guys. Thanks!

Nezumi

What are some things you learned over time that you wish you'd known when got started with editing?

nap

How different do you guys approach editing skits as opposed to other things like films and music videos? How do you know that a project is done and move on from editing?

hankey65

rocco and derrick have you seen under the silver lake? it’s by the guy who did it follows but it is nothing like that movie. it is amazing and has some veey unique elements literally tailored to rocco. please watch on movie club

Jonathon Haeffele

What is one aspect of production you think Mega64 could improve and what production aspect do you think you excel at? Also, any chance of a Christmascast Bluray set?

ssJaken

I produce a podcast and have always struggled with audio leveling and mastering. What are some tips and tricks you've learned over the years when it comes to audio (podcast or vids) and any gear, mastering chain/plugin, or workflow suggestion's

Heathcliff

How is it working with the software? What are the best/worst choices? How has it changed over 25 years?

saiferoth

Editing long footage can be really tedious and boring. Do yall find youre able to multitask with a movie on the side or its too distracting when doing audio or small cuts. (It is for me)

Msyjsm

Ooh I know this one, Schindler's List

Msyjsm

What are the funniest editing choices in movies/videos that have inspired you? What are some examples of the smallest tweaks you've made that have had the biggest effect (positive or negative) on the funniness of the end result?

Just wanna say the podcasts during covid with all the green screen vfx was always hilarious and super entertaining !
