please don’t do grave of the fireflies for movie club, good movie but simply too much of a downer for a fun conversation. I vote for Whisper of the Heart, I think its one of the best ghibli films that gets kinda short changed because its not as fantastical as the miyazaki/takata films but has probably the best emotional core of any of them

PenaKULatta

Ernest Scared Stupid for October.

Salvadorable

If you do anime month. A Silent Voice and/or Your Name.

Zach Shephard

For anime month, you have to do Akira

Lanzeroo

Themed months sound great! Hoping for an Arnold one soon

Lanzeroo

Also if anime month pushes through I hope you guys see Gantz 0

Nezumi

Anime month sounds great. You could do different genres each week could be drama, horror, sci fi, maybe historical or comedy or sports even

Nezumi

some other ideas for theme months: Parents' favorite movies One director but movies from different decades Movies you've heard a lot about but never have seen Documentary month Movies with titles you hate Movies in genres you typically don't like but think you'd like Movies with actors doing something out of their usual genre

SlavicGold

not into themed months but I do appreciate the recap of the nominations during the oscars. Just to follow along with that event.

Mary and Steve

Parent’s favorites is such a good theme idea

Mary and Steve

If you do an anime month I’d love to see you cover Unico or something else with Osamu Tezuka characters 👉👈

DT

millennium actress would be a great pick!

Mason Addis

Full support for anime month, gonna recommend The First Slam Dunk. I never cared about sports, never cared about sports anime, but went into this blind and the story and animation were unbelievable. Made me an instant fan.

JakeWhyman

Technically not a movie, but "Memories" would be a great pick. It's three short films combined into one by Koji Morimoto (Animatrtix, Robot Carnival) and Satoshi Kon.

Puffy

Themed movie months sounds great. Would love to hear you all talk even more about End of Evangelion. Having more guests/ guest movie picks is also entertaining.

Nico C

I like the idea of a monthly theme! Best Picture winners you guys haven't seen, horror. Maybe like Record Club, where you pick out of the Roger Ebert book of movies you have to see. And I do like when it's a movie neither of you have seen, or revisiting one you saw a long time ago.

CptnHaircomb

i was going to suggest 2000’s comedy month but i honestly think we’d be down to just shawn on movie club

MrTheButt

Anime month sounds great. Four weeks in September, four Eva remakes.

Patrick Haddon

Sword of the Stranger is a cool stand alone anime action movie, that not many people know about

James Morrone

I like when you review comedies because you have a lot of insight on careers of comedy actors and how comedy changes over time

James Morrone

Wolf Children is a great anime movie!

Maxx Clark

Please watch Spirited Away! I think Shawn would really enjoy it.

Maxx Clark

Any of the most famous Ghibli movies are a must. Spirited Away being an academy award winning movie is my top pick. Other than that My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Castle in the Sky or Princess Mononoke.

Maxx Clark

For Satoshi Kon I’d go with Paprika or Tokyo Godfathers.

Cort

If you do an anime month I’d love to see a Mind Game vid. Masaaki Yuasa’s directorial debut. It’s super trippy, experimental and overall fun to watch. My favorite anime movie.

Pearstrike

Princess Mononoke hands down

Patrick Brown

Silence of the Lambs won best picture before Sixth Sense was nominated

MikeOShay

I watched this movie not knowing anything about it other than the imagery around the theme song. I was so reassured when you guys brought up how insufferably boring it was, I thought the exact same thing. I think it'd be fun to see your reactions to Grave of the Fireflies, but I think that should come near the end of the month. Tokyo Godfathers is great, though I'd love to see you react to Redline. Also, if you're taking suggestions for future themed months - Weed month

Matt Burrell

If you're taking recommendations for anime month, I'd suggest "The Night is Short, Walk on Girl"; it's really accessible to someone who doesn't watch anime, but is still very visually distinct and well directed

Algaro

I recommend Revolutionary Girl Utena for anime month, it’s one of the most out there crazy classic anime movies you can watch. Definitely a favorite of mine.

DoflamingoSnailPhone

I recommend Redline if you guys do anime movie month. Very fun, high energy and over the top racing movie with some of the best animation I've seen. I think you guys would enjoy it.

Neil Steffens

I like the theme idea! Just a thought, if you're doing 4 in a month, perhaps you can do a poll on Patreon to pick one or two of them. Perhaps each of you pick a movie, Patreon picks one, and you can do a Crew pick from somebody in the office?

Ellipsoidz

Sounds great! Anime movies, I would recommend: - Mind Game - A Silent Voice - Angels Egg - Wolf Children (or watch Mirai no Mirai, same director) - Only yesterday (great non Miyazaki ghibli movie) - the Cowboy Bebop movie (works well as standalone movie) - interstellar5555 Also watch Furiko (Pendulum), it’s a 3 min short that is super touching and great. Also Tokyo Godfathers is great but maybe save it as it’s definitely a Christmas movie

Beany Tuesday

Seconding the people saying Redline, and also want to say that Millenium Actress would be a great Kon choice. It's a very sweet and sentimental movie without a lot of confusing or weird anime stuff, and for that reason I think it might strike a chord with Shawn more than say, something a little more out there like Paprika. Tokyo Godfathers should probably wait until Christmas
