I'm stoked to hear Rocco wants to do music, and Derrick for encouraging his friends to dream. As an amateur musician myself, I would suggest trying a chord type instrument like either guitar or piano. Even as a melody guy it will organize your songs and even help write them. Studying just a bit of theory will also take you a long way. You don't need a huge amount honestly, but otherwise it's like trying to write in a language you don't know. Sure, some people can from years and years of immersion and talent, but theory always helps understand and arrange things. SD mesa community college even has an extremely good theory/ear training program taught and designed by a PhD. Good luck, Rocco!
