Bad news! Art never stops being in a pain in the ass.

This was supposed to be a very simple drawing, but every once in a while you make the mistake of trying to work through pain-killer haze (I had a little cable-management induced back injury, I'm all better now) and sleep deprivation and frustrate yourself into oblivion. I figured this was a teaching moment, LOL.

NOT ILLUSTRATED - how I actually tried rendering both of those scrapped sketches for at least a few hours before realizing I didn't like them 😐

I almost called it quits on this one, to be honest, but after my back got better and I had a good night's sleep, I fixed it very easily first thing in the morning 🤦‍♂️

hardest lesson for most artists is scrapping drafts. but this is a perfect illustration as to why we should. it’s dreamy in the finished piece 🤩

GOD i know this feeling—on a happier note, it must be SO nice having a beefcake boyfriend use you as a pillow when you don’t actually have to breathe under the weight of all that bulk 😅

You know what's funny? I thought the original looked absolutely fine. If it had been me, I would have been like, "yep, this is good. Post!" But then looking at your final version again, I thought, "oh, yeah, no, this is way better."

Gods, this is adorable ❤️

A great case of “slow down, you’ll get there faster” in action. I can’t draw for shit but I write and make chainmail and sometimes walking away is just the best thing you can do. Love this sweet tender moment you captured, it’s perfect 🥰

Thank you for sharing this, it really helps. Seeing your process of searching poses, expressions, the whole scene… it means a lot. It’s also a reminder that behind such incredible results lies so much painstaking work. And honestly, it hits especially close right now, since I’ve been trying (and failing) to draw Astarion’s face for three days straight - probably because I’m working with a fever😅 Please take care and get well soon!

I love drows impossibly large noggin 🫶🏻 they’re so beautiful I could cry 🥹

Veestah

Astarion’s shirt, bony fingers and lil smile… Drow looking like a minute away from a complete comfortable sleep-drool… your honor, I love them.

Shandora

Awwwww look at the shmushy face of DU Drow!!! That looks so comfortable!

Zamona

How cute 🫠😍 the process is amazing!

Don‘t get me wrong i love to see the struggle it makes us artist so human 😩💓🥹

I always find the answer to drawings feeling weird when I leave them for a night or a couple of days to actually see them with new eyes. They get so used to seeing the same thing is hard to see what feels wrong. Glad you found a way around it! And know that even if we don’t feel great about one piece (which we are are biggest critics) we all love and appreciate what you do 🫶🏼 And also, gives us a moment to improve ❣️ And yes I love DU Drows cute face in this. He looks absolutely adorable and I know Astarion thinks the same hehehe

Abby Knight

omg the snuggles so precious 🥹♥️

Azurami

I want these men in so many ways- and in ways I mean save and cuddled up 🥲

Junior Crone

The rays of light in the final render are 😙👌

Yes, bad news, but on the other hand it's somehow helpful if you also share something like that with us. I struggle on a regular basis, even thought of giving up again just a few days ago. But I try to keep going. I've already gave up too much in the past.

tyshalae

ahhh its gorgeous! the nipple is the center of the universe obviously!

Lezzleee

I liked the little shoulder fix at the end. I didn't notice it until you did it, but then was like, yep that shoulder was indeed quite long! Love to see the process.

Vic

relatable struggles bro 🤝 hope ur back feels better soon (also love the drawing, as per uszhe)

LuinenBluewater

From the chronically-sleep deprived person who's so stubborn that can and will redraw something 4 or 5 times if it doesn't click, know that you're not alone in this 🤝 Taking a break and looking at it with fresh eyes helps a lot tho! Btw I'm glad you didn't call it quits on this bc it came out super good, the pose is so natural and sweet 🫡💕

Andy O'Connor

I swear I had some nice eloquent comment to make about how your art helps us in these trying times but DAMN son I can't stop looking at that shaft of light that perfectly illuminates Dudrow's armpit... and contemplating how his tricep is so roundt and toned against his tree trunk chest that it kinda looks like his ass cleavage if you only look at that part... fffsssshasghlsdglsadgh I wanna be squished by him SO BAD awioeftuaognhafio;jbvao

Omvega

look at his lil smushed sleepyface oughh

Chaaalie Rae

I think my favorite shot was the in-between first flat coloring and the first shading. It's like "Ah, there's the color," to "Magically there's depth and these are living things" (Kinda living, sorry Astarion lol)

Seeing this progress really illustrates (ha!) on how important it is to come back to a drawing after staring at it for hours. Even just the slightest adjustment to a head placement greatly improves the overall emotion and theme for a piece. This certainly is a nice reminder that it's something I gotta do myself lol.

jackiedrawsart

Just curious, what do you mean by a pose feeling flat? Like, unnatural or stiff? What are the giveaways? (This might be a language thing for me). I'm curious because I genuinely don't see what you're seeing on "sleep deprived" sketch. Do you have advice on what makes poses less 'flat'? Sorry for such a nuianced comment, I've just signed up for your patreon to see your process/study what your art can teach me. No pressure to reply!!
