Top 10 Essential Graphic Novels, Part 1 - with Stuart McMillen

Graphic novel recommendations by cartoonist Stuart McMillen. Want to build a graphic novel collection, but don't know where to begin? This is #10 to #6 of the Top 10 Essential Comics countdown. These are the graphic novels that I think will appeal to as many readers as possible - proving that comics are about more than just superheros and gag strips.

Great recommendations, will read them all. I really like Adrian Tomine, he does some great "regular life" type comics.

Alan Thomas

Great job! I really like the way you restricted your subject matter as this allows for more "serious" themes in the material. I also like the fact that I've only read one of these titles, which gives me things to look forward to in the future. I'm looking forward to Part II.

I really liked Persepolis, I borrowed some of Saccos books but I found the style of writing/storytelling really hard to follow. Specifically who is saying what, and what do the square lines represent: his thoughts, a voiceover? Tips for how to read Sacco's work would be highly appreciated!
