In Nicaragua and Central America, the banana economy literally destroyed people’s lives. Big companies used a pesticide called Nemagón (DBCP) that was already banned in the US for causing sterility and severe illnesses… but they kept using it on workers down here. Thousands ended up sick, infertile, broke, and some of them are still protesting today, like outside the Managua Cathedral. So yeah, bananas are cheap, but the hidden cost was human lives. Fun economy, right?
