KATSEYE - 'WILD' Album Review (Patreon)
Content
Okay, friends! I'm really glad I checked out this EP from KATSEYE. I think... I like it. I definitely am getting a little bit of a sense of what this era is for KATSEYE and the overall vibe they are giving us. It isn't as "wild" as we speculated it would be. I think they ARE growing up and maturing, they are finding the balance of quirky/campy and commercial pop, they are settling into a visual aesthetic that is really cohesive. And, more than anything, they are feeling more grounded and present than I've gotten from them in a while.
We need to give these girls a lot of grace. They survived an intense training program then the most chaotic (and traumatic) survival show experience, they had a very twisted narrative put all over Netflix and have been dealing with the fallout of that ever since, they ROCKETED up to the highest form of stardom way faster than they'd been trained/prepared to and have been going with this intense schedule non-stop, then the company has pretty much been encouraging people to talk about drama after drama (instead of their music or anything else). They've been going through it and, at the end of the day, these are just some young girls who desperately wanted to be artists and do what they love.
It always come back to criticizing the company for putting them in this position, NEVER about criticizing the girls themselves. I don't feel like I should have to say that but... apparently I do. Hahaha.
I think, at this point, I am liking KATSEYE. I'm not loving them the way I did when they first debuted, the way I did with the first big opportunities they had. I think this is a strong release and a good place for them to be right now as they get their bearings again. Their commercial success is massive, so they aren't going anywhere anytime soon. I hope as they rest, as they keep performing, as they keep writing music (and getting songs included in official releases, hopefully!), we'll see them really find their identity and settle into the greatness they are/can be.
I will always support them. I am not overly excited about this album, but I'm proud of them and I support them.
