If you want part of “how”, look back at the hair pin.

papagolfwhiskey

Did you see the bullet divot in the hairpin. It saved her life.

Jin Noodles

What were the odds you'd be watching 2 possible kissing scenes getting cut off in 2 different anime's at the same day? First in MDUD and now here lol

Jin Noodles

also you were asking how Loulan survived, look at the hairpin she sold again at the end

Aidos Smagulov

I might be wrong, but I think this is the first time we’ve seen Maomao cry - which really drives home how precious her time with Xiaolan and Shisui was. And to be fair, Maomao didn’t exactly push back against Jinshi’s advances. We’ve got biting, napping on laps, face-touching, by classic anime romance standards, that’s some serious progress for just two seasons! 😄 It is very short frame, but they showed damage from bullet on hairpine, so it is Maomaos’ gift saved her. Also, Tamamo is name from Japanese history and myths, it is hint for us - where she wants to escape through ocean Overall, what a great season! Super satisfying to see how everything from Season 1 came full circle, and how all those plot threads were connected right from the start. And your reactions and discussions were great too - thanks for sharing them!

When she hands the hairpin to the vendor theres a crater in the design from the round ball that was shot at her. Thats how she survived, she lived off of chance from the fall onto possible powder snow to the gun hitting right at the hairpin.

Palikawii

The hair stick saved Loulan! You can see it has a bullet hole when she trades it for the cicada :) and the man that was walking next to the bush with the shiny thing, that was the guard that saved Maomao from the snake room Oh, and season 3 is coming out in 2027! Ugh, I can't wait that long...

ElijahLew

I Hope 86 is a candidate for the next reaction eeeee. I feel like they would love the storytelling in that show alot. prayge-ing hard. And its not super long either at like 23 episodes!

AttackRunRepeat

Ugh what a beautiful ending. Did you guys watch the opening?

Yorutia

And recall that when Maomao gave the hairpin to Loulan, she said "let me wish you good luck." Then Loulan said "in my collar? Not my hair?"

Yorutia

Loulan took a jade cicada. The "sui" in the names Shisui and Suirei means jade. And bugs are what she loves. Also, the name Tamamo means seaweed that is as pretty as jade. So on one hand, she is leaving behind her past life while venturing to the other side of the ocean. But on the other, she is still keeping the jade symbolism with her, to remember her sister.

Yorutia

I love your analysis at the end. I really like how Apothecary Diaries isn't "emotionally exploitative" like some other shows, in the sense that it doesn't deliberately stirs up your emotions with excessive use of sentimental music and cinematography tricks. It just presents the story to you, plainly, and let you decide how you feel. A great story does not need to use excessive presentations to tell the audience how they should feel.

ryanapplegos

I have to admit I'm usually not a fan of fake-out sacrifices, as it can often feel like they retroactively cheapen the moment, but I think I find myself forgiving it here since Loulan's sacrifice still marks her departure from the narrative (also I just love her). She's changing her name, her look, her identity, and going to a new land to write her own story, something she's never had before as a puppet to the people around her. She does die in the original web novel, but the author added Tamamo's epilogue in the light novel. I think it's interesting how it feels like Loulan is one of the only characters who's a true lone actor. She has no loyalties, no allegiances, she makes her own plans according to her own feelings and morals, and once shit hits the fan she only acts as she wants to. Once "Loulan" dies, her strings have been cut and she has no one left to serve, nowhere she needs to be, and can cross the sea simply because it sounds fun.

Dont know how both seasons were able to end so strong but they are easily in top 10 arc/season conclusions of all time. S3 can't come soon enough, slowly getting through the novels starting from the beginning in my downtime so probably will get through books 5 and 6 before the anime comes out but this show absolutely shines as an anime with how everything is directed and paced. Like they didnt even have the whole jinshi walks out with unconscious maomao from s1 in the novel, she just passes out from bloodloss and thats end of chapter.

Ryne

Ah-Duo finally got a chance to raise children after losing the chance to raise her own son. I imagine she sees Jinshi in Suirei. Also, women aren't allowed to make medicine, but Maomao can administer medicine as long as no one knows she made it.

Chels

Feifa guns were a lot slower than modern guns, so certain armor and padding could protect against them. If you recall, there was no blood. ☺️ the blood on her face was her mom's. I wasn't sure until they said there was no body, but then I was like "oh! Of course, the ones who produce a new gun are gonna produce a safety measure against them too! And no blood!" And ya I think the snow was shown to be thick so perhaps she was injured, but lived and crawled away. 🤔

Fabien

I don't know what will happen, but I really think one of the future seasons will be about the westerners that helped the Shi clan. Maybe not the next season I don't know, but one day, we still don't know what they wanted out of all this (to destabilize the empire ?). I think what would be cool for a new arc, would be Maomao sent to a dissenting province of the empire where mysterious stuff happen. Just to change where the story takes place. Something like that.

mariacake

I also think she purposely gave her new name to the seller guy in case Maomao finds the hair stick and asks the seller where he got it - he’ll be like “oh you know I remember who sold it to me! A young lady who really wanted a cicada jade and she told me her name is Tamamo” and Maomao being smart will take that as a clue that she’s alive (bec of the name and the cicada jade)

mariacake

Yes! 35:00 - I also think it’s the guard!

mariacake

Can’t wait for the next season! Chou-u going to stay in the plot seems like! And what was in the note!? There’s Gyokuyou as the new Empress and Jinshi not being the crown prince anymore. So sad Maomao had to return to the Pleasure District (she’s left to her own devices like attempting to cut her pinky, WTH maomao!) I thought she’d return to Jinshi’s office bec she was originally there and was just loaned to Gyokuyou while she was pregnant.. I think they had to bec Jinshi’s identity is revealed and Maomao is known to be from the La Clan. Will Loulan/Shisui/Tamamo return?? I hope we see Xiaolan again.

SLF needs more love

Cannot wait for the next thing you will react to after Apothecary Diaries.

Lucjusz Kusiński

If you ever watch "How a Realist Hero Rebuilt a Kingdom" you'll understand Shishou more. He put all of the rot in one place, and then lured Forbidden Army to them. It's like luring all the ants from your garden with sugar, only to replace it with poison. Basen's punishment for letting Jinshi get hurt is beating. In anime they showed some random soldier, but in books Jinshi said something like "I feel bad for Basen, because his dad has a really heavy hand" implying that Gaoshun would be the one delivering the beating (with a stick). Also Suirei's story is so sad if you look at her taken to take care of kids (before she is told that kids are alive). She was of Imperial blood, bullied her whole life, only to lost everything she care in the end. if you think that was sad, can't wait for your reaction to next season :D Random funfact: In the credits scene, VA for Loulan/Shisui is named 'Tamamo' so she is no longer Shisui or Loulan. But she is not comming back, I heard taht in webnovel she just got killed, probably softened in LN/Anime to make us feel better.

Barry

This was a great journey. This is my favourite show of all time and you guys did it justice!

Following along with you all, and even before episode 24 confirmed it... I was actually ready to accept Loulan's death as the scene was building up to it, however the way the death scene happened and knowing how this writer crafts her story, I expected Loulan would still be alive. 1) This writer likes to write in a way where they set up future plot points or arcs way in advance, and they also like to write in a way where things aren't as they seem at first glance. It has happened so many times that story events / characters shouldn't immediately be taken at face value. 2) No major (good) character death has happened so far I believe. 3) It's incredibly satisfying when an unexpected (competent) ally appears to help. By faking Loulan's death, and (temporarily) writing her out of the story so that the reader forgets about her... that would make her (future) help/assistance/return all the more exciting. She seems to be heading to foreign lands... as we all remember she handed a note to Jinshi about possible (future) threats (aka upcoming arcs) that they need to be worried about. The blonde twins haven't been utilized much yet, and the Shi clan had contact with them, so that's how Loulan knows. She might be taking steps, even now, to help Jinshi/Maomao out. 4) Loulan has been written and characterized as quite a capable and intelligent person. If anyone would be able to get away with believably enacting her death it would be her. She was never that attached to her identity as a Shi clan family member, so she would be more than okay to let the person "Loulan" die, after crafting the narrative of the Shi heads being evil masterminds. So these are the arguments from a meta and character perspective. Then, on to the death scene itself... 5) She flung herself off the building, and the show didn't even bother to pan to her body on the ground. That was convenient. Then you'd think, well she did get a shot in the chest... Pretty fatal, however... 6) If the entire scene and sequence of events was (largely) crafted by Loulan she could just as easily prepare herself by wearing plate armor under her loose clothing or something similar like that, and stake her life on her good luck that the bullet wouldn't hit her fatally. When rewinding the bullet actually didn't show any blood, so that was subtle and good misdirection. Well, that's my thesis.

Honeybadger

My predictions at the end of episode 23. It makes me suspicious that loulan never gave jinshi the hairpin maomao gave her. She knew it was his. And she had it in her collar, where she got shot. Copium!! She also made jinshi promise those who died already will not get punished at again. Important wording, so the children who are "dead" will not get executed. Also and I know she could've never planned this, but her being shot in the chest and falling down she might also be considered "dead", so I hope she will come back to maomao. After 24: I am happy she survived although it's so bittersweet, that she doesn't get to say goodbye to maomao.

Phaedra

I've heard that the web novel is where the author writes down her first, original thoughts for the story and then looks at the commentary later and makes adjustments for the actual (official) light novel release. The web novel is still getting written and released, with feedback from the public. Like Jinshi was originally suppose to die here too but fans liked him too much, Fengxian was supposedly dead long before Lakan ever found out he had a daughter, Maomao was originally going to be assaulted in the worst way when she was stuck in the stronghold, ect ect. The web novel is dark, this author is dark, lmfao. But she likes listening to her fans.

Phaedra

Shisui literally went to 'not Japan' to become history's Tamamo no Mae, lol. In the light novel, she says she's going to the island nation to the west. I'm surprised ya'll didn't watch the opening yet, or did I miss that in another video? If I had to vote on a show for you guys to watch out that had similar vibes to this one, it would be Ascendance of a Bookworm. That also has a new season coming out next year.

will y

I hope we get another mystery show like lord of mysteries to replace apothecary diaries 😁

Cat Huang

Jessica Mulligan

If you're still wondering how she survived, if you look at the hairpin again you can see it has a bullet impact mark. She was literally saved by the hairpin.

Nick Pram

Wes and Steph would be in pieces.

A little late, but just wanted to point out that Jinshi wasn't avoiding the prince title and hiding in the rear palace to prevent assassination attempts. He did that because while growing up, he would alwasys hear rumors that the former emperor wasn't his real father (everyone know his tastes). This, combined with the fact that he doesn't really look like his "brother" the emperor, led Jinshi to believe he was illigitamate and didn't deserve the prince title. So he pretened to be a eunuch and managed the rear palace. His mission that he has mentioned before could have been to discover his true parentage. This is why Jinshi was so shocked when Shenlu said he looked and sounded just like the former emperor when he was young. That was confirmation that Jinshi was indeed legitamate, which made him question everything he had believed about his parentage. That's also part of the reason he finally stepped up and accepted who he really was as a prince.

Really enjoying all your reactions, analysis, and theories!! Binged all your reactions to Apothecary, and My Hero Academia in about a week and a half and now working my way through One Piece 😊 I was wondering if you ended up reacting to all the OP’s and ED’s of season 2? I didn’t see you mention them for part 2 at all. Would love to see you watch them!
