Now that you guys have finished this amazing series, I hope you watch Tatsuki Fujimoto 17-26 or Heavenly Delusion next.

ElijahLew

Now we wait and hope for Season 2 LOL. Also at the final scene when the 2 of them are about to hold hands they form "86" with their hands!

Marco S.

To address Steph question: a manga exists, but it's only three volumes as the author dropped it because of health issues. 86's story continues in the light novels. The story covered by the anime goes up to the third light novel. 14 light novels have been currently published.

Bobby N

Thank you so much for making it a double episode. Now that you are now done with the series (there hasn't been any news for another season unfortunately), will you both react to the Youtube video about what you might've missed in 86. Its a 3 part video by CtrlAltQQ. I believe it'll be a good way to the series if you watch all 3 parts as the real final conclusion.

Ale

Yess!!

So to answer your question, the first cour (11 episodes) adapts the first volume of the light novel (except the epilogue.. 11 episodes from 1 book is insane to me). The second half of the anime covers up to chapter 9 of volume 3. The whole story is 14 volumes long so far. There is still a lot more in the story, but I agree with the sentiment that I like where it ended. I'm fine with the story ending here because it feels like all of the character arcs have been (mostly) resolved. Everything from our main ship to Ernst with the eighty six, it feels really complete. The story remains unresolved on the "scale of the world" but I care more about my characters than anything haha. I also agree that the direction of these two episodes was really really good. Especially episode 22. The author (her name is Asato) has done a great job at world building which wasn't highlighted as much in the anime (anime feels more character focused), that's why it makes sense for the novel to continue forward and see things to their conclusion. There are more loose threads in there to explore. Also, I'm glad you watched the two episodes back to back otherwise the blue balling would've been.. yeah..

I also think that for a lot of light novels, the manga adaptation gets released after the anime and lags behind the anime (Re;Zero, Mushoku Tensei, etc.). There are some exceptions to this (like The Apothecary Diaries). But generally if the manga were to be made before the anime, or go ahead of the anime, then the manga would dictate the character designs, scenes, etc. of the series. The mangaka will have to come up with all of this on their own, hence why it doesn't really happen that often. For light novels (written), the manga tends to be a secondary visual representation of the source material, the desired primary visual representation is always through anime (ex: Violet Evergarden's light novel being published by Kyoto Animation and then turned into an anime). Hence why it's better for the anime to have more decisions and more freedom in how to present the story and having a secondary telling of the story through manga can interfere with that.

marco

so glad you guys watched both episodes

An absolute masterpiece. Start to finish, perfection. Just a quick tidbit (a lot of reactors are confused why Raiden survives), in the novels Raiden puts his machine in autopilot at the last moment and exits before the blast. This is shown at the last moment in the anime vaguely with it panning to the left before the blast. This is why he is shown outside his vehicle next to Fido. I believe the author needed everyone to survive in order for Shin to understand that his actions matter and that people don't always leave him alone. I really do think this is a top 2 or 3 slow-burn anime ever.

Tressk

That colonel that was talking to Lena in that room when she had her cat in there, he had those portraits of his family and him hanging out with those two 86 people facing outward because he wanted to make himself look more appealing to the two Federacy officers that were there that were essentially evaluating him but you could tell from how they were looking at him that they knew he was full of shit lol

Kevin Wang

One of the most cathartic endings to an anime. Even though this is one of my all time favorite light novel series, I'd be completely okay with them ending the anime here. There isn't a good stopping point for like the next 4-5 volumes after this point in the story.

mimiyowa

In previous episodes, when he was yelling at Lena, the portraits he had there was with his family

Tressk

Yes but he turned them outward to make himself look better to the two federacy officers.

Exit

Shin is just happy that the person he talked on discord is actually a hot girl, not just some random dude 😂

Zen

Fate/Zero next? Another masterpiece :D

Dragons like Bananas

Raiden once again shows why he was considered the only person able to survive alongside the Reaper , " a werewolf matching the reaper in ferocity " some random fun facts : The author originally had no plans of making Lena and Shin's relationship romantic, she only decided to make it romantic after re-reading the story and noticing they had good chemistry. The cat Teppy / TP is short for Thermopylae , Lena named him Thermopylae (the battle of Leonidas & Xerxes) to represent the squad's heroic death in battle. Thermopylae also translates to " Gates of Hades" Lena got the moniker "Bloody Reina" because she leads the 86 the same way Queen would lead an army. "she was cold enough to make the hard calls but cared enough to never waste their lives. " . She isn't afraid to sacrifice/send units to their death to save the rest of the squad if needed. ( Raiden was the first to notice that her leadership was similar to a Queen) The legions code name for Shin " Báleygr " is another name for Odin meaning " the one with flaming eyes" likely referring to his powers letting him "see " were the legion is and what there doing Shin shares other similarities to Odin Shin got his powers after almost dying, Odin gained power and wisdom after almost dying Shin collects the tags of his fallen comrades, Odin collect the souls of fallen warriors Shin is the leader of spearhead who use Reginleif's (the name of a Valkyrie) , Odin is the leader of the Valkyries Lena doesn't know the concept of sewing , she believes buttons just exist on clothes.

Jacob

The novel talks about how blue represents death and that butterflies represent the world of the dead. We can see that the legion are always depicted as blue, and the living as red. So when Lena walks onto that battlefield, she's metaphorically bringing him back from the world of the dead and bringing life to him 😭. Speaking of which, the battlefield was in the Republic of San Magnolia. They had chased it that far (you can see a San Magnolia statue in episode 20). The Republic saw the huge legion that started the invasion coming towards them and so they decided to go take it out. That's why she was there. Also I was not and am still not laughing at you guys about Ernst... I think you were right to have suspicions. That's all I'll say on that. While I agree that this is a satisfying conclusion if it ends here, the story continues to be so good from here. The legion are fascinating, the world building is excellent, the characters continue to get great development (especially with fleshing out the other 86 outside of Shin), and the romance is super compelling! I'll continue to hold onto hope that we'll get more. About Shin not thinking as much about Lena, he actually did in the beginning of the cour. Raiden could tell that he thought about here a lot and mentions it to him multiple times. Also he did read military manuals in the library, even though his mental state is deteriorating all season. In episode 17, it shows that while he nearly went off the rails during combat, he is only reminded about self-preservation by Lena's voice (or him imagining it at least). However, at episode 17, he hears the legion in San Magnolia and then comes to terms with Lena's death (he says goodbye while thinking of her). It's after this that he becomes a complete mess and fully develops the death wish he'd been flirting with. And after this he doesn't think about her much. Thinking about her used to ground him. After that point, it reminded him that he has nothing to live for and no one to come home to. At least that's what he thinks. Anyway, thank you for a great reaction! I'm glad you enjoyed it and picked up on a lot! A lot of people miss him trying to carve out his own dogtag, for example.

Renden

It's ok y'all I also can't help but cry during these episodes

F l y

Man it was a ride. I remember the first time that I watched the anime I was so anxious that they might not really meet so when that last OST started playing I bawled my eyes out and to this day is still one of my favorites songs, Man what a great story and thank you for the chance to relive this adventure.

Rostislav

Damn, these last episodes always make me cry. This time I held it together... until Steph set me up in the first few minutes 😭

Hayate

The last scene direction was sooo well done, and completely in sync with the lyrics of the song: - The sun reflection on Fido's eye looks like a tear - "Now we meet under the sky. You are smiling" -> Shin is introducing himself with the biggest smile he ever shown on screen - "My chest started screaming" -> Lena start to realize who is in front of her - "My eyelids, flood over" -> Zoom in Lena's eyes as she starts crying - "Now we meet under the sky, within breathing distance" -> Lena crying scene - "I didn't shout a word. Eye to eye, I stared back at him" -> Literally what is happening

TheSlothSmile

I've watched it five times already but you guys sent me over the edge again, I'm bawling my eyes out I love this show so much. The Directing is amazing. Thank you for reacthing to this one it's so good. Now that I think about it is so similar to Gundam : Iron blooded orphans and I can't unsee it both made me cry 😭

renna

And the way she instantly recognizes the others by their voices, bcs she realizes it's them right in front of her. It’s just so well done and so moving

Angelboy259

Small fun fact, the song playing during the end is called LilaS and it stands for Lena Is Looking At Shin

Armando

I started this show years ago,but never finished it. I’m glad I got to finish it with you guys. What a beautiful story.

Kevin Jamer

I highly recommend getting the light novels. Anime covers vol 1-3. I have only read to I think vol 9 but it gets so much better

€lie

Time to re-read the novel, and I'm still hoping the news of the possible return of the show is really happening ^^
