That wasn’t even close to where I expected this story to go after the creepy interview. The director especially surprised me. Also, is it just me or is Ruby giving Light Yagami vibes at the end? Hide your death notes!

Light Yagami is the perfect comparison 😂

I don't think fan mobbing has much to do with numbers, but rather how big the pool of your community is because even I, a bodunk Idahoan with mediocre cosplay and visual kei fashion skills have been fan mobbed before at a visual kei music festival in LA 😂 Also, ya I've been in a lot of uncomfortable fan-mobs around cosplayers. Like there was one time I was literally shoved aside like out of a cartoon by screaming fangirls over a couple of friends that were well-known. They were 2 girls and friends but doing a couples cosplay of Zero and Kaname (?) From Vampire Knights. The fans proceeded to grope at them, sexualize them and make gross requests of them like "please makeout for our picture" and made them super uncomfortable. Same with my band friends, anyone with some amount of popularity. It's as if that wall of Fandom dehumanizes them and gives a pass to mistreat them. Always bothered me. Hot take, tho. I kinda think the director really wasn't being creepy to be creepy. The idea that sex sells really is super prominent in the media of Japan and there is this mentality of "if I want to get attention, I need to appeal to people's attraction" so my friend that worked as a Host and vocalist really put a LOT of effort into making himself a sexual object to secure a fanbase. The director kinda made some of the same arguments that my friend did. I wonder if there's some kind of deeper understanding of how pervasive that mentality is in Japanese media that we just can't understand, because he didn't seem interested in her or any girls from a gross perspective. He seemed more like "that woman will sell. Who is she?" And when he found out her work, he wasn't thinking of her as a human, but as merchandise/a selling point for his show that's supposed to be kinda controversial (Edgy Japanese TV basically means they rage-bait people, make inappropriate, edgy jokes or do very controversial topics. There was a really funny/creepy/sometimes wholesome show back in the day called Hard Gay which features the wrestler Hard Gay, a openly gay wrestler that goes around in kink-gear. The creepy aspect was that there were uncomfy weird jokes like shoving his crotch in people's faces, but he did a lot of good for communities. The problem was the same jokes were applied when the charity he was doing was related to school kids and I know that is a producer/director choice because it is what drew the most attention. So many times those specific eps were shared online like "look at this weird show.") The dude just seemed like he's given up on being a decent director because he was washed up, and he knew what would draw attention from the anime crowd, because unfortunately the biggest buyers of anime in Japan tend to be those kinda people stereotypically, as the mangaka girly brought up in her rant about fan-merch. I feel like he really got super thrown under the bus after being forced into that position by the industry, the same way youtubers get pressured into making specific kinds of content and lose their way along the way. Eg. There was a tiktok doctor dude who was respectable for a long time, but because the algorithm ONLY rewarded his crazier videos, he ended up just going unhinged, giving or demonstrating the most insane medical advice and so on.. He definitely should be held accountable for falling into that, but not sure I think it is strictly that he's a skeeze and maybe the show is highlighting an issue in the Japanese industry. That's just what I perceived. Maybe that's why the other characters forgave that part so quickly because they understand it like "oh ya, he was just trying to do what other shows like this do. The core issue is the lack of respect and dehumanization in media." 🤔 Something like that. But ya, I kinda do wonder if Ruby's goal in choosing that cosplayer for the show was intentional and maybe she set up the costume change somehow, which led to the pressure the director felt to do something more "interesting" found out she was a adult content creator, figured that was media gold, and then snow-balled from there

27:00 That's how I found your videos on YouTube 😳 I was clickbait by a beautiful woman on the thumbnail, but I stayed because of the genuine reactions and deep discussions

Rostislav

31:10 As I understood it, what angered her most was not the questions themselves, since she already creates adult content, but the fact that the directors did not bother to discuss this with her before filming. She was upset by how cosplayers were disrespected. The last-minute costume change, the tough questions without warning just because she's an adult content creator, etc.

Hayate

I know the anime poll is over but if you want a show about the anime industry, I recommend "Shirobako"

Nina

OMG it just clicked. The mangaka mentioned that they usually approve cosplays and other requests as long as they are not sexual. It was Ruby that recommended the adult content cosplayer. She must have known that the person in change would not approve the request when they look into the cosplayers involved. Quite dirty wow

Nina

We know for sure Ruby lied about it being difficult to get the approval. She was just setting up their expectations so that they wouldn’t dig too deep into it from the get go.

Rostislav

That, and Bakuman. I know it will never win anywhere, but I can't help mentioning it.

BCloud

Uooo Bakuman manga anime lol
