Penicillin was actually discovered by accident in 1928. The conditions were so specific and the scientist was researching the influenza virus at the time. He was considered a sorta careless person and when came back from a two week vacation he discovered the mold that had formed on the plates he left uncovered. His penicillin strain was actually kinda shit compared to modern day strains and the one we use was discovered on a moldy cantaloupe in a Peoria Illinois market in the 1940’s which could be cultivated commercially. It’s basically just luck and a lot of time.

Man 1 episode a week is just not enough lol especially for this slow first season. btw maybe you guys noticed since you are now watching both at the same time but Subaru and Senku share the same va

starrk

They really do it step by step which is so fun to watch. Like you said they have a lot of sidequest but this is necessary to get more manpower so they can continue the main quest. You really feel the "building modern civilization from scratch" concept. No worries, slowly as they unlock more things and recruit more people, their progress will also go faster. Also while the science is accurate, it's still anime so you'll just have to accept that some characters have certain quirks like how Suika can fit her whole body in the watermelon and roll around haha.

RCG

Yeah, I think Steph said it too. This is the kind of show that goes on a lot of little side quests to achieve the bigger overarching goal in front of us, so some episodes really feel like we’ve made barely any progress.

Momotaro is one of Japan's most famous classic stories/folklore about a dude who is born from a giant peach and fights onis with his animal friends. I only know about it since a lot of other anime reference it and never actually read it, but I'm sure there are people here more knowledgeable about it

The locals definitely DO have agriculture, but it seems to be fruits, roots, and maybe tubers. When Suika was hiding, she hid around places where there were carrots, pumpkins, and watermelons. They didn't seem to have grains or corn (I am now realizing I am unsure if corn is a grain or a fruit), so their agriculture is definitely limited to some degree.

I appreciate that these Dr. Stone comment sections seem to be full of fun facts lol. It's enjoyable to read them all after watching the reaction.

Oh good observations!

The reason ramen came to mind (which no, wasn't made from millet lol) is because ramen is a crazy science experiment of a dish that transformed over a span of a thousand years or so. It started as a simple noodle dish in China and transformed in Japan, then transformed in a different way in Korea lol but essentially what makes it so crazy is that unlike pasta or bread, it's not your standard dough. It's alkaline egg noodles. I recommend researching it yourself but it's a pretty cool piece of science and food Anthropology that unifies 3 cultures. But the reason he used millet was because they don't have wheat it seems, and so he was improvising.

Yea I agree I wish it was 2 a week like MHA, but they prolly got a full plate especially with the newish kid.

TheSlothSmile

YAAY new episode, this is where the show starts to setup what its actually about setting up long goals and workign towards them even when it doesn't seem plausable to achieve them

Oscar Medina

It is kinda like the Beowulf of Japan. One of the most influencial pieces of writing and yet I don't know anyone aside from me that read it

Since we are speaking about antibiotics: DO NOT USE ANY ANTIBIOTIC UNLESS PRESCRIBED PEOPLE ! ! No, i dont care that you think it will help or that its what your mom/grandma/whoever taught you. If antibiotic resistance keeps getting worse at this rythm we wont have anything to use against bacteria in a few decades. As someone that works in the field: yeah, its that bad (btw yeah, I know that theres research on plasmids but we still need atbs in the meantime and future, and also why would you help in making the situation worse?) Also, this is Sidequest: The Anime, so get ready to do some crazy and tangentially related shit lol
