Hey Wes & Steph, this might not be the greatest place for this but I wanted u guys to check ur dms real quick. I wrote up some code that could help u count nominations a lot more quickly if ur interested

I can't wait for the school festival!!!!!!

Dragons like Bananas

1:59 I've Heard it's actually a bad translation, "look me up in 10 years " is closer to what he actually says . Still pretty weird but the focus is more on Mineta becoming "cool " in 10 years

This seasons is so good 😭 cannot wait for the final 4 episodes, they are such an emotional rollercoaster

starrk

@35:02 the notebook scene is not that odd they showed it because Gentle said something like "i know you have feelings invested in the festival but it's not stronger than ours", so a little montage showing everyone's efforts from eri's excitement to the dancers and the band, even Bakugo is so invested that he's giving music tips to Tokoyami so that their performance will be perfect. Deku remembered that mid fight as extra motivation to show Gentle is wrong and to beat him.

One of the things I dislike about MHA aside from the author unwillingness to kill any character and the too fast pace (this one is more forgivable since most shonen do it too). Is the the is lack of romance, we don't see characters romantically interact with each other or have more intimate moments with each other. I'd love to see Mina x Kirishima but I guess I'll just have to get my fill with Khyleri cursed funny fan art 🥲

Wurzeldieb

yes, it feels like almost every hero/teacher, every villian and every student is single. It actually makes the world less immersive and less believable to me, it is already pretty low for me, it should be way, way more crazy when almost everybdy has powers.

domi

Todoroki's "Midoriya is in trouble" senses are tingling lol

RCG

It's a shounen. Important characters don't die that often. That's just how the genre is. But we literally killed off a guy from the League of Villains and Sir Nighteye just this season. And I don't want to spoil anything but those aren't the last deaths. Also, "too fast paced"? Really? There are other shounen that are way slower but in my opinion, even MHA is still too slow. Just look at the last few episodes. Everything after the Overhaul fight is basically side content that drags on. I'm not saying it's bad per se but it could have been handled much faster with fewer episodes. And the start of the next season, which is arguably the weakest season of the show, is also pretty slow. Can you tell me a few shounen that you think actually have good romance? Because I think there are barely any that do. Obviously, there are the mandatory fan ships and a few cute scenes here and there but overall it's just not something that goes well together. I mean, you wouldn't watch a romance show, for example and then ask, "Where are all the cool fights?", would you?

Kindyh Bordat

Fair point on the deaths, I worded it badly, it's less about the body count and more that deaths rarely happen to characters we're deeply attached to. Won't say more for spoiler reasons. On pacing, I should clarify: when I say "too fast" I mean the in-universe timeline, not the episode count. Deku goes from quirkless to fighting top-tier villains in basically one school year. Compare that to Naruto's 2.5 year timeskip or Demon Slayer's ~2 years of training before Tanjiro touches the top ranks. So funny enough we might agree from opposite angles, MHA drags on side content on screen while rushing its own internal logic. Worst of both worlds: slow to watch, rushed in-universe. For shounen that handle romance well: Fullmetal Alchemist (Ed/Winry, Roy/Riza), Inuyasha where it's literally central, Rurouni Kenshin, even Magi has a decent one. And I'd argue your analogy doesn't quite work — romance is a subplot, not a genre swap. Nobody asks a romance show for cool fights, but battle shounen already juggle comedy, slice of life, tournament arcs, school episodes... romance is just the one subplot MHA refuses to develop despite setting up half a dozen ships itself 🥲

RCG

Okay, got you wrong on the pacing then, I guess. Sounds more like a personal preference, though, I think. You are right that it's not really plausible how fast Deku or some of the kids are growing in power but that's, as you already said, a thing in most shounen. I don't mind it too much. FMA and Inuyasha are the first ones I thought of too, and I would say that even though I like the romance parts in, for example, FMA, it's still just a very small portion for a show that's running that long. (Also, FMA isn't really your standard shounen, I would say. It's literally one of the best shows out there, to be fair.) For the last part: yeah, it's a subplot in a shounen because it's obviously not the main focus of the show. Shounen are usually already handling a lot of subplots, so it's kind of unfair to demand everything, I feel. It's something you can be happy about if it's there, not something you should criticize if it's missing, in my opinion. But honestly, you are right. It's setting up a lot of ships that actually feel very good/natural and personally, I also wouldn't mind shifting some time over to that instead of dragging the fifth or whatever training arc out. Even though I feel like, at least for the main characters, we get a bit more romance/emotional depth by the end of the show.

Btw, when this Season Finishes, you can watch the next MHA movie. It's called Heroes Rising; it comes right after season four. It's my favourite one!

Renden

Ok, but that's not the story the author wanted to tell. The story is about Deku and the struggles of superhuman society, and has elements of romance in it. Sandwiching a full romantic subplot in there without making it *about* that subplot or ruining the overall plot is difficult, because it would feel out of place in the overall narrative. The author did a great job giving us a taste without making the show about the romance.

Kindyh Bordat

Bro if the author didn't want to had romance why did he introduce countless ships? And even in the end of the manage, years after, non of them lead to anything. Crazy how we didn't get anything in the conclusion. Spoiler : (Even Deku and Ochako didn't properly finish)

Mr. Bibinho

How did you handle the cases in which people say the name of the anime wrong (if you count them at all, you might just ignore them)? I’d like to see the code just out of curiosity but I don’t think I can DM you 😭

Tanmay

I send all of the comments to Deepseek (an LLM) in batches. Through its logic, I am able to figure out what ppl mean when they type AoT or the Japanese name for a show or just spell it wrong and get a single English name for the full title returned. I then just count all of the titles and sort them in descending order.

Mr. Bibinho

Riiight, given the amount of possible different "names" a single anime could have (and straight up invalid names people could give), I guessed you might have had to use an AI API to decide if it's a valid name or not. Thanks for the answer!

Narawin971

I think people should stop shipping to an extreme level bc then they start thinking it's canon which makes them disappointed when they realize it might not be ^^". The deku x Ochako was so forced too. we didnt need that at all.

Kindyh Bordat

Did we watch the same show? The ship was established since episode 3 or something. It was obvious, it's just that the author never developed it.

Johan

I can’t stand mineta, that scoundrel.

Shiggy

It takes place in the middle of season 5. There are spoilers in the movie if you haven't watched up to episode 13 of season 5.

TastedPurple

wdym the author never developed it? the author decided to "close it" on provisional license test episodes the plot doesn't have room, characters doesn't have time for a proper romance and prob got negative feedback on it or something who knows? whatever the reason was, author didn't leave it hanging. straight up told the viewers i think it was pretty responsible thing they did

TastedPurple

Gentle's goal is just to sneak in there's a type of video in Japan that's called "tried ~" or "~ yatt-te-mi-tta" (which Gentle specifically said himself 31:36) so it's literally "we tried to sneak into UA", there's no further goal after sneaking in what's the point then? those type of videos don't have point other than what they are doing it'd be similar to something like "we tried to hack into pentagon" to do what? steal info? no, just to prove that they can do it, or just for fun cuz it'd be interesting to see someone actually pull it off like a challenge or it can be anything really. that's the point but it's usually something silly or stuff no one thought of doing cuz it's easy for anyone to do for example, "i tried putting on 40 T-shirts" seemingly useless stuff like this so it's more of a cultural thing than translation that you need to know as a context
