Tony Tony Chopper

I kept my emotions in check until the very end of the episode

Marko Genter

Man its so funny how almost every reaction channel didnt realize right from the start that it was showing the diary lmao.

Mr. Simple

let’s go!! thank you for the reaction!

Rudy literally become like Orsted in S1 when he asked “Does the word Man-God ring any bells?”

rizqiefajar

6:33 The realization lmao

Quinn

Remember when Rudy first met Sylphie, he stopped the bullies from throwing rocks at her with water magic? Now they’re throwing rocks at her corpse, and he responds with fire magic or should I say burning down the entire country

Jack Witt

The Six-Faced World (六面世界 Roku-men Sekai, lit. "Hexahedral World") concept was first mentioned by Man-God in Ep9 of S1. Also, Kishirika has always introduced herself as the Great Empress of the Demon World not the Demon Continent. === World of Naught is a bad translation. It should be Void World (無の世界 Mu no Sekai).

Eric

To be fair to Oldeus at the end, his future sight only let's him see what's ahead of him. So, since Eris wasn't anywhere near where he is he never saw her in his vision of Roxy and Sylphie.

Kaisar Akbar

That's a great theory, just imagine how powerful the combination of Rudeus's genes and those of his wives would be—it's no wonder the Man-God is targeting them. Who knows? 🤷‍♂️

Claudio Castro

The next volumes in the LN upcoming for the anime are my favourite ones, I'm so excited for the next cour

Alvaro Vesga

So Mushoku Tensei author decided to give Rudeus the "re: Zero suffering" treatment 😭 (plz don't slander me both shows are great)

First of all, this episode was an absolute 10/10 for me. Even though the adaptation cut a ton of corners, the emotional impact was still insane. While there are definitely some scenes I’m glad they didn't animate in full detail, skipping so much critical context hurt the pacing. This easily needed an extra 10 minutes or a special runtime to let everything breathe. (Fun fact ?: The episode aired on Wife appreciation day. This studio is crazy, they did the same to Paul.) A few huge details the anime left out or skimmed over: -Why Oldeus hated Eris so much: Rudeus was an internationally wanted criminal across basically all human territories outside the Magic Triarchy. When he snuck into Asura, Eris intercepted him, beat him half to death, and had him arrested. The time he lost rotting in that cell are the exact reason he couldn't make it in time to save Sylphie, which is why he harbors such bitter hatred toward Eris and genuinely believes she's working for the Man-God. Cliff is the undisputed GOAT: The sacred divine-tier detox scroll was one of the Millis Church's most guarded relics. By stealing it, Cliff knowingly threw away his birthright, his political future, and his shot at becoming Pope just to save Roxy and Rudy. The sheer scale of Rudy’s descent: In the novel, Oldeus didn't just burn the surroundings he burned down a third of the Asurian capital (Its the biggest city in the world, so he probably kill hundreds of thousands in the process) and went on a prolonged, horrific rampage across the kingdom slaughtering, and violating (sexually) many in his path. The Automaton & Zanoba (The other GOAT): The doll wasn't just a basic mechanical doll; she was a complete, sentient marvel capable of doing anything a human could. Oldeus was terrified Zanoba would despise him forever for smashing his life's work, but Zanoba ended up apologizing to him instead. Pure brotherhood. This is also why the magic kingdoms didn't deliver him, Rudeus and Zanoba was a valuable ressource to make magic weapons and items. The Millis ambush: This wasn't the first time the Church sent death squads after Rudy, so the household was used to repelling them. But Oldeus wasn't there when it mattered. The novel description is brutal: Aisha and Juliette were hacked to pieces, and Zanoba died holding the doorway until his last breath to protect them. How terrifyingly broken Oldeus became: Later in the diary, Oldeus treats top-tier fighters like minor inconveniences. He casually slaughtered North Emperor (Peacock from the first episodes of the saison) and Water Emperor Isolte Cruel (Eris’s sword partner, the closed eyed lady) purely for intel, to the point he didn't even care to record their names in his log. He was even seriously running the math on killing Perugius too.

A Guy

To put something into perspective, the capital was already the size of a large country burning a third of that means he killed an inconceivable amount of people

The Anime Dude

True wisdom comes from painful realization - seeing the root cause of one's own ruin and accepting responsibility. Rudy is a very flawed man, he always has been - and he’s written so consistently in that regard… he shuts down, withdraws, & lashes out when faced with loss or trauma. This time we see how those shortcomings can cascade… man god may have pushed some of the initial dominos, but a lot of what happened thereafter traces back to him, his nature, and his decisions… every human is capable of good & evil, & while he’s gradually grown a lot from the start of the series… it’s important to never get complacent, to continually choose good, to know your own shortcomings, and to overcome or avoid those shortcomings. By not accepting that responsibility & not being the best version of yourself, you’ll only bring pain to those that you care about… Hopefully reading this diary is a wake up call that will get him to lock in & prioritize what’s really important. "A man cannot become a hero until he can see the root of his own downfall." - Aristotle P.S. seeing Lucie in an abusive household to where she essentially lost both parents broke my heart… Oldeus failed as a father. :( Wonder how modern day Rudeus will feel reading that? P.P.S. It’s very important/intentional that this diary episode happens AFTER episode 12… cuz had we seen this first? It’d appear as a bit of a Deus ex machina where he’s getting a chance to undo this & fix things… but, everything here in episode 13 happened. Oldeus doesn’t get to redo anything. Him & Our current Rudeus will (hopefully) live very different lives with the future changed, and are essentially different individuals from here on out. Just think that framing is important/intentional, cuz there are no do overs… we have to hold the weight of the mistakes we’ve made…

A Guy

Also as to the nanahoshi I don’t think that was actually confirmed wasn’t it more main Rudy positing what might have occurred. I think the implication was more that he wasn’t there for her the way he would normally be and the confirmation she couldn’t go back was the final straw

Kindyh Bordat

@A Guy : Yeah i wasn't sure about the nanaoshi stuff, i'll read the chapiter back to be sure. Thanks for pointing it out. Edit : It was indeed not in the chapiter itself, maybe it's mention later, i dont really remembrer.

BMO Mgrimm

I loved this episode. It shows the grief of our characters. Rudy becomes some blend of his old self, Paul, and Orstead. Sylphie starts out being persecuted, with rocks and mud thrown at her, and ends up the same way. Eris was kidnapped and tortured as a kid and then is once again by Rudy, remembering possibly his words not to speak last time as well. Roxy never gets the family she wanted, dies alone, unable to communicate her thoughts and feelings. Let's show some love to Rudy's two best men dying trying to save his wife and sister. Cliff is a candidate for the next Pope of Millis and is becoming a dad, and he throws that away, becoming an apostate for Rudy. Zanoba comforts Rudy and makes a functioning automaton his life's work and passion, and still consoles Rudy after he destroys it. There is some speculation that the man Rudy tortures to death is one of the men Ruijerd saves in season 1, although I doubt it. If that's the case, he also ended up betraying him by killing one of the few people who know the true nature of the Superd.

Finding out how time travel works in this world (no spoilers, just current knowledge and logic): 1. "Single timeline" (Old Rudeus warns his younger self, and Old Rudeus's own past changes too) - This creates a paradox: how can Rudeus tell himself about events that never happened? - Even if the author didn't put much thought into time travel theory, you'd expect something to happen, like Old Rudeus being sent to a better, worse, or different future. 2. "Recursive timelines" (Old Rudeus warns his younger self, Young Rudeus tries to prevent it, but everything happens the same way anyway) - First, it would be very odd, writing-wise, to tell the story as if this were the first loop (Old Rudeus never mentions meeting his future self). - And even if that's intended, Young Rudeus would have to relive the exact same events his older self described. That's extremely unlikely, and it's a dead end anyway since he already killed the rat carrying the disease. So I think the best candidate so far is "unrelated timelines": Old Rudeus changes THIS Rudeus's past. Nothing can be done for Old Rudeus himself, and Young Rudeus faces a whole new challenge: beating or avoiding the Man-God.

Zak

This is a subtle subplot that the author has hidden during this season. In the books, we are told Sylphy will often go to Elinalise for advice and that Sylphy (and to an extent even Roxy’s) knowledge of marriage and communication styles comes entirely from Elinalise, leading her only response to difficult situations was to suggest physical intimacy. However, what they don’t understand is that Elinalise and Cliff have a completely opposite dynamic than Rudy’s household. For Cliff and Lise, Lise is the one with real world experience and handle external forces while Cliff is the one communicating and keeping their relationship strong and stable, which is why Lize’s methods works for her. However, Rudy’s household have a completely opposite dynamic with Sylphy and Roxy, where Rudy is the person in Elinalise’s role. That’s why Sylphy communication style is completely ineffective for Rudy’s and Sylphy’s relationship.

Zak

Feel bad for Eris this episode. Eris really never changed. Deep inside her she still wants to believe Rudy is the same Rudy that would apologize and makeup with her after she gave him a beating when he did something wrong like when they were young. But Rudy has changed.

Æsir

Cut from Anime but there was like... a line or two in the LN Diary where Oldeus was worried and thinking of Lucie and how she was doing and that it was for the better that she was not in his shadow

blood_drac

So many parallels to scenes in season 1

Azer S

The mass teleportation couldn’t be Orsted. We see him in season 1 looking at the mana gathering and saying basically « TF is happening » What interesting is Orsted seem to be able to see the future, hitogami see the present, with the exception of other gods action. but both of them didn’t see it coming. So I think there is a third minor god f… around For Sylphie, she wasn’t supposed to follow Roxy in the grave. Hitogami appeared to Luke to persuade him to persuade Ariel to do a coup. Oldeus say it in the ep 12

ByakkoByakuya

"People can change" has always been one of the themes of Mushoku Tensei. And, just as you can change for the better, you can also change for the worse. While their roots are the same, Rudy and Oldeus are two separate characters. The accumulation of experiences determines one's person, after all. Oldeus lived the remainder his life from that moment on as a depraved being, whereas Rudy is still 18 and has the rest of his life to look forward to. Oldeus simply represents one particular future where Rudy becomes the worst possible version of himself. He is a reminder that our Rudy also has the potential to regress and become like Oldeus if he ever stops trying to be a better person. That's one of the things Oldeus actually feared. He was afraid that his soul would merge with the current Rudeus after he traveled back to the past. He didn't want this other version of himself, who is still innocent, to be shackled by his sins. That's why he also said there were no do-overs, and why episode 12 and episode 13 weren't inverted. Oldeus' story had already ended; Rudy's story was just beginning. This aligns with episode 12's title card, "An End and a Beginning."

A Guy

It’s been a while for myself in regards to the last time I read it, so don’t sweat it

ByakkoByakuya

Oldeus thought about Lucy from time to time, but he was ashamed of showing himself to her, so he never dared to write her a letter. He was also targeted by the Millis Church as a wanted criminal, so he didn't want his daughter and the rest of his family to be targeted and end up like Aisha, Zanoba, Julie and Ginger. By keeping them away, he was also somewhat protecting them.

Sergey (Horn)

An important detail that was left out of the anime but is present in the light novel is that when Rudy speaks with Hitogami, he doesn't speak aloud; Hitogami hears his thoughts.

Philsi

It took me a little bit too to be honest lol

Sergey (Horn)

I read the web novel, not the light novel, and most of the events you described played out differently there. It’s surprising if they really differ so radically.

Random

Rudy became a bigger villain than all of One Piece combined, yet still doesn't hold a candle to Eren.

XDrakeX

1:42 Thats just some convenient speculation. Even if Rudy and roxy met back then nothing would have happened. Roxy wouldnt have fallen in love with him cause he was a kid and she still would have continued searching for his mother on the demon continent and Rudy would have continued to bring Eris back home and he was already crushing on Eris and in a promise with her. Man-god actually needed this situation to happen with the rat. So its interesting to think that he wanted to keep them apart but if you really think about it, it doesnt make much sense.

Probably one of the most brutal episodes I’ve ever seen. The only saving grace is that we know beforehand that this is an alternative timeline (aka the “Dark Timeline”). A few things: They released this episode on Wife Appreciation Day. The animators are evil. First it was Paul’s death on Father’s Day, now this 😭 Rudeus literally becomes a wanted criminal when he steals that book containing a God-Tier detoxification spell from the Milis Kingdom. That’s why he has to sneak across the border to Asura. And he wiped out most of Asura, one of the most powerful nations in the world. His house got burned (when Ginger, Zanoba - who’s physically strong but weak against magic, Aisha, and Julie are killed) by the Milis Kingdom soldiers. They’re obviously mad that he stole their book but also because of what he did in the Asura Kingdom, which believes in the Milis Faith. Rudy got them back though. Rudy was half-deluding himself at the end when Roxy and Sylphie held his hand. Which is fair as he was literally dying. The Man God isn’t just cartoonishly evil. There is a reason why he did this to Rudy, although he did enjoy watching Rudy suffer as well.

Dragons like Bananas

Parallels • Roxy was the 1st to meet Rudy , she's got him to leave the house and taught him magic. She was the 1st to die , unable to leave the house because Rudy didn't know enough magic. • Sylphie was the 2nd to meet Rudy, the 1st time he saw her they were throwing rocks at her and he saved her with water magic. She's the 2nd to die , the last time Rudy sees her they're throwing rocks at her and he avengers her with fire magic. •Eris was the 3rd to meet Rudy , one of their first interactions was him saving her form a kidnapping, she was unable to save Rudy form a powerful opponent. She's the 3rd to die , one of their last interactions is Rudy kidnapping her , she was finally able to save Rudy from a powerful opponent. Also want to mention the absolute loyalty of Cliff and Zanoba. Cliff went against his own country, essentially ending his dream of becoming Pope and risked his life knowing he was going to be a father just to help Rudy. Zanoba stuck with Rudy even after he became a terrible person and destroyed his life's work , the doll. Even choosing to be burnt alive trying to protect the last bit of family Rudy had left

Oasis

Just a reminder that next week’s episode is the last episode before the mid-season break. There’s no official confirmation on when the second half of season 3 will be releasing, but it’s looking like it’ll be around maybe April 2027 😭 Edit: it looks like it will release around April 2027 😅

Dragons like Bananas

Not fun fact : in the novels Rudy finds Aisha and Julie cut into pieces.

Fabien

My theory is that the Man-God got back to taunt Rudeus just so that Rudeus spends the rest of his life trying to kill him, instead of making another family (with Eris for example). Notice how Man-God only did that after Rudeus seemed to get better, after all those years. I think he just wants to avoid him having more children after Lucie (for some reason). Remember Hitogami also influenced Luke (Oldeus said it last ep) which led to events that killed Sylphy, so it seems he killed Sylphy too. Why would he have done that ? Why did he come back to taunt rudeus what it seems to be 5 or 10 years later ? I think it's all to avoid him having more children.

Dragons like Bananas

In the novels Rudy leaned about the 6 faced world and it's story of creation all the way back when he was teaching Eris, but though it was just a fairytale similarly to how he thought Perugius, Laplace, The 7 grate powers and basically any other important people were just fairly tales. I'm guessing the anime is going to go over all of that in the second cour so I'll wait until then to talk about skipped information.

XDrakeX

Re Zero only had a break of 1 or 2 months between cours. Why would there be such a long break? No I wont believe that.

David Stern

Honestly just supporting this comment so Wes and Steph read it. There is lots of great info here!

David Stern

Hey just wanted to remind you that the teleportation incident was because of nanahoshi being summoned to the world, not Rudeus (or at least that’s what they think since there’s not really a way to confirm it).

Cameron

I'm really glad that took an episode and did it all at once. In the light novel it got split over several sessions/chapters because Rudy couldn't handle the weight of the story in one sitting. I think this way was better

Rostislav

42:30 Wow, you're cooking something here, but I'm not going to say what it is :)

Rostislav

If the goal is to prevent them from having a child together, then Hitogami's efforts to keep them apart are understandable and logical

Rostislav

Oldeus jumped to another timeline, as in StainGate. This is one explanation for time paradoxes, created specifically so that time events wouldn't get stuck in a loop.

William

Light novel was so much worse

Billbob

Some pretty great predictions being made at the end, I think a good number of them will come up in the next cour? Either way this was a 10/10, alternate timeline mass murderer Rudy was written too believable and the saddest part is just seeing how many people he had around him that were literally ride-or-die for him. Zanoba and Cliff absolute best bros and the diary really solidifes that for current timeline Rudy. Especially since we know from the brief intro of Cliff that he was adopted by higher ups in the holy city so he completely betrayed his country for Rudy.

blood_drac

I believe Old Rudeus saw what Roxy and Sylphy would have done if Rudeus didn't get up and open the door to stop them from coming in. I think that makes it more impactful if they instantly recognized Rudeus, knew he was dying, and comforted him. Anyway, here's some non-spoiler things from the light novel diary chapters I thought was important. 1. Eris/Asura - Rudeus while in Asura goes to Milbotts region which is governed by Pilemon Notos Greyrat (his uncle/Luke's dad/Paul's brother) because he heard a false rumor that Ariel's faction was being sheltered there. Rudeus tries to sneak into his mansion, and Eris catches him trying to break in, beats him up and he's thrown in the dungeon. He escapes, travels back to the capital Ars but is too late to save Sylphy. This is why Rudeus suspects that Eris is an apostle because she kinda had a hand in Sylphy's death. Did Eris do it for a good reason? Probably. Ariel's forces which included Sylphy were "wiped out" by the opposing Prince's faction who had the Water God and a North Emperor on their side. This is the side Eris was on. It is not explicitly stated why Eris was on the side of the Prince/Pilemon and against Ariel. 2. Magic Armor - Rudeus reads about the Fighting God, rank four of the Seven Great Powers, who wore a golden suit of armor that vastly increased his speed, strength, and endurance. This is where he gets the idea of building the magic armor from. 3. The Dragonfolk Ruins - Rudeus travelled to a remote corner of the Begaritt Continent and found and studied an ancient Dragonfolk mural (which is depicted), which shows him that the world is six sided and the Void World and the Man God are at the center of these worlds. The only way to get to these other worlds is by passing through the Void World at the center. The worlds are the Human World, the Dragon World, the Beast World, the Demon World, the Ocean World, and the Sky World. The mural also depicted the Dragonfolk's attempts to find a way to get into the Void World. Summoning magic and teleportation magic were developed as offshoots of their research into spells for how to travel through the Void World to reach other worlds. The Dragonfolk attempted to create something to allow them to travel into the Void World, but the part of the mural depicting what this was had crumbled away. After reading this part of the diary, our Rudy thinks that this explains the reason why being teleported felt like getting sucked underground. Because teleportation pulls you through the Void World and travels through it to get to your destination. Old Rudeus finds a second Dragonfolk mural, this time high in the mountains of the Demon Continent. Rudeus wonders why they built these things in such dangerous, well-hidden places swarming with monsters. Rudeus then thinks that the Floating Fortress would also qualify as a ruin like the two he's found so far. This Dragonfolk ruin in the Demon Continent had a completed mural with a section describing their method for reaching the center of the Void World. The ancient Dragonfolk created five treasures, and using all five sends you to the Void World instead of merely passing through it. Rudeus finally figured out how to reach the Man God, but he was over 60 years old at this point. Rudeus visited Perugius again to ask him about the five treasures, and Perugius tells him that they're held by the five Dragon Generals and all of them are required to open the door to the Void World by means of the Dragon God's secret art. Perugius believes the missing Dragon General will appear within a few decades. Rudeus thinks it's odd how Perugius worded this and thinks he's hiding something from him. Perugius says that Orsted might know something about this secret art, but nobody has any idea where Orsted is. Rudeus despairs, realizing he won't live long enough to collect all five treasures. 5. Time Travel - Rudeus arrives at the thesis that he can combine teleportation magic with the ancient Dragonfolk magic described in the murals, tweak the execution, and travel to the past. Rudeus uses the diary he started writing in the day he went down to the basement as the focal point/medium. Since this had never been done before, Rudeus didn't know if he would revert back to his younger self or jump back in time as he is now. Rudeus considered jumping back in smaller steps but was afraid to do this because of the fear that he would leave his memories behind when he teleported and get himself stuck in an infinite time loop for eternity. He decided to just go all in and teleport to the past in one go. Rudeus was not anticipating completely running out of mana or losing his organs in the process of teleporting to the past.

James Esparza

There was also Eris being tied up and crying like when she was abducted when she was a child. Also the guy he interrogates looks to be the same guy that Rudjerd helped with the 2 other people at the end of Season 1 and he also gave the name "Dead End"

Anthony

By the way I'm pretty sure the novels have explained this before this episode but Roxy actually would have survived in the teleportation dungeon because she has a strong fate. Basically the stronger the affect an individual has on the future the harder they are to kill. It's kinda like the universe makes small rewrites when the man god tries to kill someone in order to decrease the chances of that person dying. For example, if Rudy never went to the labyrinth, then people would have made different small decisions that ended with Roxy being saved. This is a big reason as to why the man god cannot kill Rudy because his fate is too strong.

Jonas

oh so is the person with Perugius called Sylvaril of the Void means he is from this Void World same as Man God ?

Klinch

Insane level context. Thank you for these. Also, you're GOAT-ed for not including spoilers. 🤍

Jack Witt

No. Sylvaril is Skyfolk/Heaven Race (depends on translation). I presume she's called "of the Void" due to her mastery of Teleportation Magic which in this world utilizes the Void World as we see when Rudeus and co. are first teleported to Perugius' fortress.

Xan

Yes it was much worse in the LN, as Wesley said. In hindsight Man god kind of screwed himself by mocking Oldeus which resulted in Oldeus going back in time. Now the question I keep asking myself is are there two timelines or one?

Xan

Skipped Content: Pregnant Elinalise leaves never to come back and vowing celibacy because she truly loved Cliff, which means her death is inevitable soon after giving birth.

Xan

Parallels: Sylphie was thrown rocks as a kid we see her crucified corpse being stoned, Rudy taught Eris to stay silent during kidnappings now Oldeus kidnapped Eris and she is not saying a word during the torture.

Weaboo Trash

One thing I miss from the LN version is getting to See Rudy’s actual reactions to the various things he’s reading, alongside his thoughts on Oldeus and what might have happened. For example (either in the Web novel or LN I forget) he thinks that maybe his other self tried to come on to Nanahoshi before she died. Nothing like that is ever confirmed, it’s just Rudy’s inner thoughts and assumptions about this other version of himself. Hopefully we’ll get to see some of that in the finale, but we’ll see with all the material they need to cover

Gelondil

It's especially crazy because W&S had that whole conversation about how "Next week is going to be the recap to the alternat timeline", but then completely forgot they predicted it.

Browncoat Loki

"This was more brutal than I was ever imagining" BUCKLE UP, YOU AIN'T SEEN NOTHING YET!

Browncoat Loki

Thats why I had to give in and watch it before y'all. I will say i watched it with a stiff drink in hand and clif and roxy were hard to watch, sylphie made me cry, by zanoba, aisha, julie, and ginger I thought i was too numb to care, with eris i discovered I could still care and it broke me, and the final screen had me staring at a blank screen having another drink. Also ive always put rudy in the same category as the doctor. He chooses to be "nice" because he knows he has the power not to be. Losing sylphie removed any desire to stay good.

Sergey (Horn)

I especially liked the detail that Rudeus, in order to travel through time, returned to the house, exactly to the room where he ended up after moving through time. Those. it seems that his movement in time does not move him in space.

Holy Arathi

It took me a good 5 minutes before I realized.

Irithylia

Maybe this was the "rose-tinted glasses" version...

Irithylia

Something to think about is that this would've been where the story would've gone if he didn't go back into the past. The end of the show would've most likely just been Rudeus dying trying, and that's it. Roll credits. Fin. Not sure I would've liked that ending.

D. L. Pulver

Perhaps the plague rat was seeking vengeance for Rudy's robe, which the tailor in season 2 said was made of lucky rat pelts from the demon continent. (As you say, it's very ad that after Norn, Zenith, and Lillia sensibly left, old Rudy seemed to have no interest in what happened to his daughter - or other sister. Maybe he realized it was best for them that he cut all ties.) And that he never tried to involve Rujerd, the one person who could and should have played peacemaker between Eris and himself (Also odd that Badi never seems to be around when Rudy has a demon king he wants to consult without getting into a massive fight.)

Oasis

It’s confirmed now.

It’s even crazier that Zanoba remained that loyal considering what Rudeus did to Julie in the novel.
