Oh yeah the Celts used chariots for centuries. Actually war chariots came into prominence in warfare before calvary. Fun fact: if Cu was summoned in Ulster he would get both his castle and chariot as extra NPs. He would also get both a buff from both the land and fame.

The Unlimted Blade Works OST for Shirou Emiya is so good, llisten to it at the gym sometimes

mimiyowa

(Edited based on Marcos and pylons' feedback) Can we just appreciate how good the writing is here? Saber is literally watching her own inner conflict be resolved right in front of her by the two Shirous. Saber's wish has always been to "undo the fall of Camelot by making someone else pull the sword from the stone and be less of a fuckup than I was." Now she gets a front-row seat to someone else trying to undo their past, watching firsthand what their younger self thinks of an older version popping up to convince them they are about to do everything wrong. You can see it directly with the camera focusing in on Saber multiple times as they're talking. It all comes to a head when Shirou is shown pulling the sword from the stone, which is a direct reference to King Arthur and is symbolic of the responsibility and pain that a Hero chooses to take on: a choice that Saber and Archer regret, but one that Shirou embraces.

Vedhon

rin had to use the jewel because at that point saber wasnt summoned so it wouldnt have healed him, if you remember it only worked for irisviel when saber was close to her, plus irisviel was made to become the grail so you cant really heal something thats not a wound. For something like piercing a heart Avalon is more than enough to do it instantly as happened to kiritsugu in the Kirei fight

Cachefarmer

A little carifiaction. What was shown at the end of episode 20 was that Shirou walked into the fire. The show told us that no one should have survived that fire. Shirou is alive because he walked into the fire trying to help people and got crushed by a falling building. That is what Archer forgot. The desire to save people came from Shirou himself not Kiritsugu. So his ideals are his own.

mimiyowa

The scabbard's ability is only active when near Excalibur (Saber), when Rin saved him Saber wasn't summoned yet!!

28:27 Yes Stephanie, you're right I think I also remember Lancer refered to his master as "she" once. I'm positive it will never, ever be explained so here's the reason: In the first route of Fate stay night (rather early, day 15), it's revealed the corpse of Lancer's master was found and the command spells were taken. The corpse of a woman. There's a small allusion to that in the 2006 series Fate stay night (which partially adapted, I should say butchered, the first route), but you won't watch it. No more clues about her identity will be revealed in F/sn (not even the visual novel, no route will expand that topic). But it is Fate/holow ataraxia that will show her, a visual novel which was the direct sequel of F/sn. But as opposed to F/sn, F/ha really is a game through and through and I don't think it can be adapted into an anime (it would have already been done after all this time). So you'll probably never see her, she's cool. Lancer saying "she" in UBW (only in the anime afaik) is probably just a reference to the character. Even if him saying that doesn't make a lot of sense imho.

The Tangerine Cat

Yes, there are multiple worlds in Fate. When Archer says "this world" in "his mistaken 'champion of justice' will not appear in this world" to Shirou and Artoria, it is exactly what that means. This gets into some of the world building, in essence, there are currently FIVE True Magic that stand above and beyond magecraft (what you see most mages practice). The five Magic can only each be fully "held" by an individual at any given time. Of which, the second Magic, the "Kaleidoscope" involves parallel worlds. The Second Magic is part of the setting that enables multi-timelines and world-lines. It also happens to be what enables Fake Assassin, Sasaki Kojirou's skill (slash Noble Phantasm), Tsubame Gaeshi. Saber's claim is true that Tsubame Gaeshi was a dimension refraction phenomenon where 3 blades existed at the same time, but what isn't made clear is that Sasaki used pure martial arts skills to tap into the laws of the Second Magic. He is proliferating timelines in which he performs the slash differently (and there's potentially unlimited proliferation), and then the actual slashes performed converge into the timeline he presently occupies. Borrowing words of a well-known and highly respected lore master of the Fate franchise, what Saski Kojirou does here with Tsubame Gaeshi can be thought of as: "Sasaki Kojirou the Xth iteration performing a slash in some other timeline created just a moment ago, but the slash enters into the timeline the Kojirou of the 1st iteration occupies" Returning from the tangent, yes, there are multiple branching CLUSTERS of timelines, in which it is implied Second Magic (and it's current user, Kischur Zelretch Schweinorg, Old Man of the Jewels, Wizard Marshal of the Mage's Association, and disciple of King Solomon from before 900 BC) operates locally within each cluster (where events haven't deviated too meaningfully from each other. meaningful as in the perspective of the world). The Fate/Stay Night series and its 3 main routes—Fate, Unlimited Blade Works (this series you guys are watching), and Heaven's Feel—as well as its 40 bad/dead ends (in the original Visual Novel and yet to be adapted into anime) all belong in the same cluster of branched timelines. Other clusters include Tsukihime, FGO, Extra, Strange Fake, etc where history and the course of events have deviated meaningfully at various points in history. Existing BEYOND all these timelines/worldlines and their respective clusters is the Swirl of the Root (or "Root" for short). It is a metaphysical location that exists at the top of all theories in every dimension, as well as the source of all events and phenomena in the universe, existing beyond space and time. It also happens to be where the Throne of Heroes is located (and where Heroic Spirits and Counter Guardians like EMIYA/Archer reside). Because it exists beyond all time and space, the entity known as EMIYA (Archer in this case) already exists before Emiya Shirou came to be, before ANY Shirou in ANY worldlines/timelines came to be. And thus, he can NEVER erase himself by killing any iteration of Shirou, even if it were the one that would eventually become him. Causality is essentially reversed/void here. Think of it as: because EMIYA already existed beyond space and time, therefore a version of Shirou MUST make a pact with the Alayashiki, humanity's Counter Force, during life, and die the way EMIYA died. Same broken reasoning as Cu Chulain's Gae Bolg (the thrust version), where the heart is pierced, and thus the spear was swung. EMIYA knows this, so the entire time he's babbling about killing Shirou to erase/free himself is nonsense. Rin already stated in a previous episode that EMIYA/Archer is awkward when it comes to himself—this is that. He just can't admit out loud that he is doing this for this particular Shirou's sake, and has to frame it as his own self-serving motivation. It's also why he has so many chances to kill Shirou but always misses (Archer doesn't miss by the way. he can only miss on purpose) or fails. His goal has always been to prevent another Shirou from following his path, not erasing himself. The latter is impossible, and he knows that. Even Saber knows that. In fact, out of all the endings in which Shirou dies in the Visual Novels. Archer has only killed Shirou once, the lowest kill count, and it was in a situation where Archer deemed that he couldn't save Shirou from his path, and put his younger self out of his misery. Apologies for the lore dump, and hope the extra info helps. Oh and btw, Archer is a special case even amongst Guardians. He's one of the most miserable and seems to be the preferred pick of the Counter Force for deployment. It's implied in other materials that HE—and not Counter Guardians as a whole—is the reason why the world hasn't ended many times over.

ByakkoByakuya

Lancer rising up despite suffering a fatal wound is actually one of his skills, Battle Continuation (Rank A). In his legend, he died standing up. Despite being disemboweled, he tied his intestines to a stone so he could continue fighting. None of his enemies dared approach his corpse, and when one of them finally did, his sword fell, cutting off their hand. He's one of those heroes, like Herakles, Achilles, and Siegfried, who are exceptionally difficult to kill.

ByakkoByakuya

Archer formed a contract with the World by becoming a guardian, expecting to be a volunteer firefighter who would save children from disaster areas. However, what he ended up becoming was a hired killer, mindlessly following orders to gun down child soldiers. After an eternity of this, who wouldn't become disillusioned?

pylonsf4

Good comment, but last part is spoiler-y, no?

mimiyowa

Lancer didn't die immediately because of his personal (Rank A) skill, Battle Continuation, which is pulled straight from Cú Chulainn’s real-world myth. In Irish legend, Cú Chulainn is famous for simply refusing to go down. After fighting off an entire army and taking fatal wounds, he tied himself to a standing stone with his own guts just so he could die on his feet facing his enemies (literally him standing up each time he's shown lol). Even after he died, an enemy soldier walked up to verify the body, and Cú's falling sword chopped the man's arm clean off. In Fate, that legend translates to an absurd ability to stay alive and fight through lethal injuries. Kirei's Command Spell forced him to run his own lance through his chest, which fulfilled the command itself, but it didn't instantly delete him. The strike was definitely fatal, but his sheer refusal to die bought him just enough time to gut Kirei, save Rin, and torch the room before his spiritual core finally gave out.

Glad people share all these cool aspects in the comments for y’all & that you’re excited enough about them to recite them back - cuz gonna be honest… this is like my 3rd watch through & I’m learning a lot I never knew prior - Fate lore can be a rabbit hole. 😭 P.S. Shinji do be one of the most hatable characters in anime, or at the very least I can’t stand him. 😭

CD Elio

Wes and Steph enthusiasm with Fate is so entertaining to see and rewatch with, oh how I remember rewatching Fate Zero when I finished UBW and Heaven's Feel. Anyway, basically Counter Guardians are like clean-up agents made from regular people or lesser heroes bound to the Counter Force (which is the collective conscious of humanity) to silently fix human-made disasters. Famous counter guardian in the fate series is EMIYA. Fun Fact: This is not spoiler since FGO is not on the table but there is another type of servant which emerge when the planet itself is in danger or there are world-ending threats this are Grand Servants the pinnacle of true Heroic Spirits. Famous examples are Grand Caster Solomon and Grand Rider Noah. Hehe

Mr.John Cordero

Last Stardust is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard. I always get chills hearing it again paired with Shirou remembering that day. Yes, Shirou walked into the flames on his own! Being just a kid he wasn't able to save anyone before the rubble trapped him. And yes, Avalon has been inside him since that day. Even without Saber close, the scabbard healed him enough to stay alive until he reached the hospital. As for Archer, he doesn't have the scabbard anymore. It's not really explained other than he lost it somehow.

Kracksined Nicolas

Maaaaan I forgot how much I love this episode and yes I do like that even though shirou came to a conclusion that seems pretty sound (and badass), it's still very pathological, like he's clearly still full of misguided ideas and still need time to think and process all that And I think that's pretty cool, because of course you wouldn't be able to arrive to a satisfying answer with your older self because that's so much to process

Marcos cruz

Avalon needs mana to heal the user and it needs Artoria mana to fully function, so Kiritsugu embedded Avalon in Shirou and supply mana to it to save Shirou from the fire, when Lancer killed Shirou in the first episode Avalon didn't activate, because there was no one that knew or could supply mana to Avalon, in the FATE route Shirou is even more careless with his life and costantly on the brink of death, until in a particular battle were Artoria finally realizes that Shirou has her scabbard so it made sense that he would always sacrifice his body for her since he is her sheath. Also a few facts about Shirou, the reason why he is so in tune with swords is because Avalon over time change his "Origin" to "Sword" so that's why he has an easy time projecting swords instead of any other object, Shirou also has almost a super human ability in archery, before he releases an arrow the arrow has already hit the target in his mind so he doesn't even have to aim, the only time he missed a target was when he purposely missed a target to feel what it was like to miss, and lastly the Fate universe does have different timelines, in the novel they explore three of them callled the FATE route, the UBW route and the Heavens Feel route, this anime is based on the second timeline the UBW, the Emiya Shirou that becomes Archer is from a timeline similar to the one in the FATE route, so all that is happening is in this last few episodes is new to Archer since in his timeline things played very differently

Ethereal

A clarification on the whole time-issue. In Fate, time is not a single fixed timeline. You have to conceptualize it as a collection of worlds / shards. Alternate what-ifs. The Archer we see now went through the 5th Holy Grail War as Shirou but it didn't went exactly as the one we're experiencing now. Edit: Removed the Archer comment.

Kronosok

I can’t wait for you to get to the Heaven’s feel movies. It contrast quite a lot with UBW fate

Karolis Bautrenas

I really liked the part where both Kiritsugu and Shirou got told "Hey, that's hell you're walking into." And then they turn around and walk right into it.

Marcos cruz

Her wish has always been having someone else pull Caliburn from the stone, the anime Zero never explicitly says it for some reason Ufotable omitted several things from the novel, this was one of them

Eric Mun

Archer was using a bow because he's really good at archery. He likely didn't have any swordsmanship experience starting out as a Guardian. It was a minor detail in the previous episodes, but Shrou was the ace in archery club. He left the archery club because of Shinji, and the archery club president and Sakura was trying to convince Shirou to come back.

The Tangerine Cat

No. That's just fanfiction Archer's OG timeline was not archerless or EMIYA-less. That's a popular fanon That's not how Throne of Hero and time work in Fate Causality is twisted. Archer/EMIYA existed FIRST within the Throne of Heroes, which is beyond space time, and thus existed BEFORE any iterations of Shirous in any timeline and worlds. Archer can still be summoned into the EXACT same timeline in which his younger self lived, and there would be no contradictions according to in-universe mechanisms. FYI Archer/EMIYA's original timeline was said to be similar to the Fate route, except he didn't "save" Saber's heart

The Tangerine Cat

probably fine, they most likely won't watch the Fate route maybe Heaven's Feel trilogy but not the Fate Route Anime

Fabien

Kuzuki was only stronger than Shirou because of Caster's reinforcement magic. Afaik nothing ever indicated that Kuzuki was stronger than Shirou without it. And Archer killed Kuzuki when he didn't benefit from any of caster's magic, that's why it was so easy.

Vedhon

"so it made sense that he would always sacrifice his body for her since he is her sheath. " this part is just pure fanfiction lmao

The Tangerine Cat

He had a lot of swordsmanship experience in life. All of his personal skills, including Eye of the Mind, were earned in life, not as a Guardian And yes he's skilled in Archery, enough so that he never misses. In fact, it's described by Shirou that his shots have already struck, and the action of draw/aim/release were just actions—to complete the movement for the arrow to strike. It's almost to the point where it's scratching Gae-Bolg's causality reversal, where target is struck and thus weapon was swung, just not to the extreme where the orders are reversed. That's why he left and never came back. Yes Shinji was the catalyst, but Archery had already become pointless to Shirou by then

Marcos cruz

Its a quote from the novel, what you want me to do, blame Nasu for writing this love story lol, if you want to call something the author wrote fanfic well that's on you

eXxCeZz

The reason why the scabbard doesn't resurrect Shirou when he is killed by Lancer is because it requires Saber to be nearby or supply mana to the user. Saber wasn't summoned until after he died.

The Tangerine Cat

yeah that line was fanon otherwise everything else is mostly spot on

Random

Some of the catalyst were shown. The golden fleece was used to summon Media, and the sash was used for Berserker. I am sure Rider and Lancer also had catalyst. The only one I am not sure about is Assassin; I am not sure if Media had a catalyst or if she used rule breaker to bypass the necessity to have one.

Ethereal

I didn't say Archer couldn't be summoned. Like you said, he isn't bound by time. But that Archer was not present in the HGW that Archer-Shirou participated in. An Archer-less HGW.

Jonno

For the cogs, remember this is Archers inner world the cogs are how he thinks of himself just a mindless machine that the world uses to clean up messes

BananaPengu1n

Thx, that was a nice read and afaik this isn't explained or hard to catch (after 1 game and 5 shows I've experienced related to Fate - I can only guess this is from the FGO game). Either way I appreciate some new lore since I get easily annoyed by all those YT comments foreshadowing, hinting at, spoiling what will happen in a future show/movie/short/side story ppl will watch.

Mafin

Do note that Kuzuki was being physically buffed by Caster's magic when he fought Saber and Shirou. Considering how well he kept up even with that, Shirou would likely beat him without the buff. Of course, that doesn't mean Archer isn't dragging his feet on beating Shirou down now, but even he probably wouldn't have beaten Kuzuki THAT quickly if Caster wasn't already gone. (IIRC you can see his fists glowing when fighting in some earlier parts, showing the strengthening he was getting.)

Jonno

Referen Rin saving Shirou even though he has the scabbard inside of him, the scabbard only works while Sabre is summoned and she hadnt been summoned yet (when Kiritsugu used it on Shirou it was basically the lingering affects)

C

Well, since they already said what a Guardian is, I think it would be good to explain things more in deep. First of all, what is a Servant? A Servant is the highest class of familiar. And the thing is, not every Servant is a Heroic Spirit. A lot of things can turn into Servants. So think of the word "Servant" as general classification such as mammals or fungi. So what exactly is a Heroic Spirit? A Heroic Spirit is a heroe that made a name for themsleves in history through heroism, villany, bravely, infamy or knowledge. After their death, the collective unconciousness of humanity recorded them into the Throne of Heroes. So they didn’t decide to turn into heroes, but history itself decide that. So what is a Guardian then? A Guardian is a human that while still alive makes a contract with the collective unconciousness of humanity (aka. The Counter Force) in exchange for power they give up their afterlifes in service to humanity. This Guardians are often unknown people, so they're not proper Heroic Spirits. So basically the diference of Guardians and Heroic Spirits is how they came to be and their roles. It is said that when humanity is in danger and there is only despair a Guardian would be summoned. But if instead of despair there is hope, then a Heroic Spirit would summoned. Reason why Archer says he is only summoned to clean things up and why he doesn’t consider himself a proper Heroic Spirit. Because he is only summoned to hell after hell instead of a great battle as a real heroe. There is a lot more, Servantology is an extensive pain in the ass. But, is better to explain other things with their respective series.

Tom

As an Irish person my faverite storys are cú cullin and the oragin of fion Mcúl

oliam43

yes, this is very improtant information to them

mimiyowa

I mean we already collectively voted to not watch it hence why I thought it was fine.. this route was mentioned multiple times in previous episodes' comments as well

Marcos cruz

LOL brother FATE is a love story between Shirou and Saber I don't know why that particular quote is my fanfic apparently but okay "I finally understand, it is only natural for your body to heal, I finally understand you were my sheath Shirou" better?

mimiyowa

@Marcos cruz SPOILERS AHEAD FOR Fate/strange Fake: - I see, I never read the Fate/Zero LN but now thinking about another series that points back to Zero in its final episode I think you're right !! with King Richard being shown Fate/Zero Saber and being told that she wanted to undo that.

ReCursed

It still works and i think Kiritsugu forced it to work with his mana to save Shirou. But yes Shirou was killed with cursed spear that destroys heart. So it's both Rin's pedant/magic + scabbard working.

Mats Erik

Counter Guardians are called in once every other attempt at stopping an event from destroying humanity has been used and has failed, so once they are summoned there can be no allowance for failiure. They assure this by killing/ destroying anything involved with the event in question. So when Archer was summoned he would kill everyone, and in the process save humanity. He has no agency because refusing to kill/ destroy everything runs the risk of failiure and therefore the end of humanity. His gripe is that this is a nebulous saving, because he never got to see the people he saved. Put another way he has indirectly saved an absolute ton of people, but has never directly saved anyone. He has never gotten so see the result of his actions, save for the fact that by succeeding he has guaranteed his future summoning to kill more, to prevent yet another extinction. Again, and again, and again, and again, forever.

ReCursed

Lancer Appreciation post! Lancer completely destroyed his heart with his cursed spear. It also splinters inside into small spikes to gore more damage inside. Probably his ribcage and lungs were destroyed too - it's a very potent weapon. He was able to stay alive for so long because he is badass and he has skill literally called "guts" ot "battle continuation" that allows him survive fatal blow and operate for some time. It's not unique skill others have it too but it's only for those who have a reason in a legends or history. In this episode you mentioned Beowulf in the games he has guts too. (Also both he and Lancer get an upgraded version of it after strengthening)

ReCursed

Last bit explains why he appears in so many fate media.

The Tangerine Cat

where did you even get the info of an Acher-less HGW? "that Archer was not present in the HGW that Archer-Shirou participated in" that's just pure fanon, where did this assumption even come from? and I know it's a popular fanon... but fanon/fanfiction regardless

The Tangerine Cat

yea also newest 11th anniversary video—a lot of ppl were questioning why they retconned so many events in FGO to seemingly having EMIYA going through it alone The thing is, what was shown was NOT fgo events/word-line, and was more likely what happened in the original wordline—the wordline of Pan Human History. SPOILERS: Current FGO is essentially a New Game +, courtesy of Sion, based on original Fujimaru's experience. BUT, even original Fujimaru's timeline wasn't the Pan Human History world-line. The 11th anniversary video of EMIYA going through the LostBelts is speculated to be the actual Pan Human History events. Which answers the questions of many fans: why was the Counter Force largely absent in these situations? and what happened in the Pan Human History wordl-line (the main timeline)? It wasn't absent. It sent EMIYA to every single one of the LBs in the Pan Human History world-line. And we know this wasn't the FGO worldline because there were many flashing scenes that indicated massive deviations from FGO timeline, such as the church scene with Cnoc na Riabh had swords, and many other scenes where he wasn't supposed to be there but yeah dude was fighting gods and trying to slay ORT @BananaPengu1n no problem at all, glad the info was helpful

del

So one thing Fate *loves* to do is hide connections between characters through backstory driven changes in physical appearance. For example Sakura originally had black hair and blue eyes just like Rin. Her hair and eyes turned purple as a result of her “training” in the Matou household. It’s the same thing with Archer. Conveniently enough, overuse of projection magecraft causes one’s skin to darken and their hair to turn white. Which is why two versions of the same person look completely different.

The Tangerine Cat

well yes his body heals because of avalon and "he is her sheath" but "so it made sense that he would always sacrifice his body for her since he is her sheath" is where the conclusion is drawn weirdly he throws himself in danger for anyone, he would sacrifice his body for anyone, that had nothing to do with being her sheath and YES, better, "I finally understand, it is only natural for your body to heal, I finally understand you were my sheath Shirou" means something completely different

del

In Stay Night a big deal is made about the many similarities between Saber and Shirou, or in the case of UBW, Saber and Archer. It’s alluded to here, but Archer is basically a preview of what Saber is looking forward to if she wins the grail. Saber is a very unique exception as far as servants go, because she is not technically a heroic spirit. Specifically the spirit part. Because the Saber that appears in Stay Night is actually alive. And because Saber is not a true heroic spirit, and doesn’t return to the throne of heroes, she retains all her memories from prior summons. Like Archer, she made a deal with the counter force. The deal is the still living Saber can take part in the grail wars, getting summoned to one grail war after another, until she either wins or gives up. If she wins, she presumably gets her wish granted (she never pulls the sword from the stone, so someone “more worthy” can be king), and in exchange she will become a guardian exactly like archer. If she gives up, she returns to the time and place she made the deal, the hill after the battle of camlann, where she is suffering from fatal wounds. This is the place they keep showing from saber’s past. It’s not hell or the throne, it’s a physical location. It strongly resembles Archer’s unlimited blade works, illustrating the parallels between the two. And for the record, the author has explicitly stated that Saber’s wish to undo her kingship is a Catch 22. While her kingdom fell and she lost her life as a result of her rule, it is also the best of all possible outcomes. So if Saber wins, and someone else becomes king, it will lead to an even worse end for Britain. And in exchange, as a counter guardian Saber will be trapped in a fate worse than death for eternity.

pylonsf4

You're essentially saying part of her arc will go unfinished in ubw even though there's 6 episodes to go. You're not saying what will happen, but you're saying what won't. How isnt that a spoiler?

Caleb Martin

If I remember correctly, Kanshou and Bakuya (Archer’s sword) are Archer’s favorite projection. The way Archer’s ability works is that when he projects a Noble Phantasm, he isn’t just creating the physical form of the weapon, but is also materializing its history and experiences. This allows him to use various weapon’s special abilities (for example, he can use Gae Bolg), but at a lesser strength. He also gets imbued with the skills necessary to use the weapon he projects. Kanshou and Bakuya are special because despite being Noble Phantasms, the swords themselves are famous, not a specific hero who used them. So, Archer doesn’t gain any fighting techniques while using them. His skills are completely his own.

Caleb Martin

It’s not Lancer that referred to Bazett, it was Atrum Galliasta (Caster’s original master who she killed). During the scene when he was trying to get rid of Caster, he tells Kirei to hand the contract to “her,” because he and Bazett were both sent by the Mages Association. Kirei laughs afterwards because at that point, he had already killed Bazett and taken her command spells. But Atrum obviously didn’t know that at the time

Sergey (Horn)

Great reaction. Thanks for the video. But what is "Kotomi"? Are you talking about "Kozuki"? It seems like you mixed up "Kozuki" and "Kotomine Kirei" )

Jerry10506

28:29 You guys didn't mishear before. Lancer's Master WAS a woman. The anime doesn't explain it, but The Mages Association sent another mage to participate in the war. They were an acquaintance of Kirei's and summoned Lancer with him present, and were then immediately killed by Kirei before Lancer or her could do much and he poached Lancer for himself (hence why Kirei chuckled at Atrum Galiasta's comment on Lancer's master during the medea backstory episode). She is one of the main characters from the psuedo-sequal of stay/night: Fate Hollow/Ataraxia, tho it hasn't been adapted into an anime.

Sergey (Horn)

I think your interpretation is correct, because it is really the only one that works. The other possibilities simply do not come together into a coherent picture. Young Shirou really does walk into the fire in order to save people. The problem was that, at the time, he simply was not strong enough to save anyone. And that is precisely what became the source of his regret and of everything he would strive for afterward. Kiritsugu’s appearance only reinforced Shirou’s belief that the path he had chosen was the right one and gave that belief a clearer, more definite form — it formalized it. That is exactly why, in the same scene, we are shown present-day Shirou climbing the hill and taking the sword that is stuck in the ground. He is repeating Artoria’s path, but in a different way. After all, in that very same episode, we are shown that Artoria believes she should never have taken the sword in the first place and ultimately rejects it. Shirou, on the other hand, chooses to take the sword here and now. P.S. I really hope you’ll watch Lord El-Melloi II Sei no Jikenbo: Rail Zeppelin Grace Note at some point. It’s a Fate story that isn’t about the Holy Grail War, but instead continues the story of one of the characters from Fate/Zero.

Ryne

Yes, Avalon (Excalibur's scabbard) has been within Shirou from the start. Its effect is greatly weakened when she isn't around, so it wouldn't have saved him from Lancer. You can definitely see why we wanted y'all to react to this series. When everything clicks into place, it's so satisfying.

Nikolai Ilushko

Lancer ga shinda! Kono hito de nashi! 😭

Fabien

Oh yeah, now I understand why that dialogue is in the anime ! I was confused since it doesn't exist in the visual novel, and like Stephanie I just couldn't remember where that anime-only dialogue was. I just assumed Lancer. Thanks.

Lulluf

I think the people standing behind Shirou where the "ghosts" of the people who didn't survive the fire.

Fabien

Ironically, it originally wasn't supposed to be a UBW reveal, but indeed the way they did it also serves this purpose. It's cool. Originally, how Saber was summoned (and how Shirou heals, even if they already knew that with zero) is one of the reveals of the first route of F/sn, named Fate. UBW is the second route.

Ryne

I'm aware. You don't have to explain it to me.

Ethereal

I suppose that is an assumption. I thought so because it seems silly for Archer to have turned out to be Archer if he already confronted Archer himself, but if it was like Fate route, he could've just died early or it never escalated enough where they deeply clashed or he wasn't present.

Stefan

Funny how in 2 shows that you guys are watching, the hero just met his future self, both of them filled with regrets

A M

You're correct about the scabbard. It was implied several times that he had it, when he healed incredibly quickly from incredibly deep wounds over and over. In the anime its glossed over mostly, there are more "hints" or highlights of his fast regeneration in in VN. There's another moment that gets glossed over in the anime and that's his walk through hell as a child. He heard and saw all the other victims burn alive, he heard them scream and he turned away, he closed his ears. Not that he could've saved anyone, but he was selfishly clinging to life on the brink of death, which makes his survivors guilt 100s of times worse.

A M

Lancer is such a badass. His real world myth is incredible. He died like an absolute legend. Wounded with many mortal wounds, weighted down by curses and arrows, he died standing. What a man.

Nikolai Ilushko

I hope you watch the movies and then Strange/Fake. Grand Order and most other spinoffs don't have the same depth.

Nikolai Ilushko

It isn’t a spoiler, because you can't really complain about spoilers when you choose to start a story from the middle. UBW and HF assume the audience has already gone through the Fate route. Since we don't have a proper, faithful anime adaptation of the first route, an anime-only is already watching out of order. Giving missing prerequisite context isn't spoiling the story, it is just filling in what this route takes for granted. Not to mention they already watched Fate/Zero first, which heavily spoils all three routes anyway.

pylonsf4

It is a spoiler, but I get how you're thinking about it. If he/you'd only mentioned what happened in the fate route without saying it won't be repeating itself in this one, I'd agree. With how op worded himself it creates an expectation of what will happen in the coming episodes, which is by definition a spoiler.

Archer killed Kuzuki easily because he relied on two things - 1. being buffed by Caster's magic to be close to a servant level in strength and speed and fast 2. martial arts. his martial arts was a type that insta kills a normal person the first time he uses it, but after seeing it once you know the trick so wont get caught by it again. its been shown clumsily but Saber has supernatural level instincts, which is how she managed to dodge Kuzuki's attacks, Tsubame Gaeshi from False Assassin during their fight on the stairs to the temple and also Lancer's Gae Bolg striking her heart at the very start. Caster was dead so he wasnt buffed by magic anymore, and Archer had already seen his martial arts before and so he was just a regular human.

You dont need a catalyst to summon a Servant. Having a catalyst increases the chances to summon the spirit you are after, especially if there's a strong connection to it. On the other hand, having no catalyst means that the summoned hero's affinity and nature matches with the master. On that note, the author has state that if Shirou didnt have the scabbard he would summon someone like Spartacus.

Shiroufan11

The anime frames it weirdly, but its less that Shirou thinks he'll simply do it better than Archer, and more that he thinks that Archer's path was still worth something even if it caused his suffering. Hence the lines before he draws the sword. "Even if it's the life of a machine and wanting to be a hero despite the hypocrisy. In the older adaptation of the scene Archer tells Shirou he'll make the same mistakes only for Shirou to say that they weren't mistakes.

rryutie

that intro is hilarious, embezzling mana is CRAZY.

rryutie

i didnt read the VN, i cant interpret or extrapolate any spoilers from that last part of his comment. just a goated comment tbh.

exactly Also keep in mind for Archer/EMIYA confronting Shirou isn't his priority in most routes. Archer has many chances to kill Shirou in UBW, but even then he "misses" all the time. He doesn't even get to change Shirou's mind after all this in UBW. For Archer, most things happening during 5th HGW actually take precedent before setting Shirou straight. In other routes he dies early because he doesn't want to kill Illya (which is understandable because he came from a route where they got to be siblings for a year after the HGW before she passed), or he completely sets aside his conflict with shirou when greater threats like grail mud emerges. Nasu himself also stated that there was a non-zero chance that any of the Shirous from the main routes could become Acher/EMIYA. This may sound conflicting at first—because Nasu also stated that Archer came from a Fate-like route—but it's actually supported by in-verse mechanisms: 1. Acher/EMIYA exists beyond space and time, and thus before any of the Shirous came to be 2. AND, a special mechanism of Time in fate-verse, where the Past is like a wave function of possibilities and changes to fit what is observed in the present.

Indeed, the sheathe of Excalibur has been inside Shirou throughout his entire life after being rescued-- which is perhaps why his magic is so closely aligned with swords, but he is not a swordsman himself. He is something that contains swords, not one itself; something intended for defence and protection in the image of an object of war. Something that contains those same weapons of war. Similarly, he not only contains the catalyst for King Arthur within himself, but he also reflects the same naive ideals that King Arthur once had, but then lost. Please note that in Arthurian legend, the events that caused the fall of Camelot begun once King Arthur lost Excalibur's magical sheathe, representing the end of the trust the people had in his righteousness. In Fate terms, Saber also lost both her sheathe and the naive desire to help others that originally led to her pulling the Sword of the Stone, those same qualities that are reflected and personified by Shirou.

Rmemeber Kirei got a letter in the beginning , it was from the mage’s association about their candidate for the grail war who was coming to Japan. Kerei ambushed this candidate and she is killed by him. He took the catalyst and summoned lancer himself. That’s why he is Lancer’s master. The four factions in the last 4 war were also Einzberg , Tousaka, Matou, and the mages association. Also, This Archer is from a parallel world. Shirou doesn’t need to have the same fate. 😂 It is a bit complicated. This archer failed to save Saber in the Fate route of the game and therefore had a much higher desire to redeem. I hope this is not a spoiler. This is not info mentioned in the anime.

Singer for the song during the Scabbard reveal is Aimer, one of my very top favorite singers.

I cannot wait for you guys to watch Heaven's Feel after this 👀 On Lancer - as great as he appears here, he should actually be significantly more powerful. He was originally summoned by Bazett Fraga McRemitz, a mage from Ireland and a Sealing Designation Enforcer of the Mage's Association (the same guys who came after Kiritsugu's father after the outbreak revealed his location; this is also why Natalia was after him, because he was deemed dangerous by the association and designated for sealing) and was supposed to be their master in this war, like Caineth was in the fourth war / Zero - but Kirei deceived and assassinated her (using their previous acquaintanceship from his time with the Eighth Sacrament Assembly as an Executor, and using his role as overseer) then he stole Lancer's pact. Servant/master compatibility is a huge factor, not just mana (this is also why Medusa was so weak paired with Shinji). Cu explicitly states that he and Kirei are incompatible and he is weaker because of it. On Gilgamesh - an interesting take on his character is that he serves the Jester role from other forms of literature (especially in Zero). He observes and almost narrates the tragedies around others, and in some cases it feels as they he speaks it into existence, only for the audience's benefit. This is a writing perspective seen in Shakespeare especially. I don't know if that was the intent when writing him for Zero, but that comparison has stuck with me.

They did hint at how Kotomine got to be lancer's master. Back in the medea flashback her old master went to the church and told kirei that he was gonna ask lancer's master to give him his servant, since lancer's master was also from the mages' association. Kirei was like "heh, good luck asking lancer's master". So originally his master was from the association but now lancer is somehow kotomine's servant... you get what that is suggesting lol

Drake Chuckle

Rewatching this show with you has been nuts cause yeah, there are so many hints and things I missed that everything makes so much more sense, lol.

mimiyowa

I corrected the wish part and tried to rephrase the last part

@pylonsf4 I still think it's wrong to consider that spoilers, but there, removed just for you. Everyone already voted against the Fate/Stay Night deen adaptation and I don't see them playing the VN. In a sense, in terms of story order, things that happened in the first route are okay to talk about. It just gives more context, and if you go back to prior episodes other people have discussed similar points. Basically what Nikolai Ilushko said... Regardless, the "this is a spoiler" reply (which is what Patreon shows before you expand replies) might make them not read the comment at all so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Kidd

@The Tangerine Cat You should probably more clearly mark that you're spoiling FGO content that isn't even available in English yet there.

mimiyowa

hmm, but if Kiritsugu forced it to work then it was probably just for that moment no ? That was the thing I didn't understand at the time because Saber wasn't there.. But it would be weird if him using him mana to make it work at that moment made it work for like.. the next 10 years

Marcos cruz

If the phrase was just thrown in randomly and Saber just making an observation then yes it would've pretty weird of me to come to that conclusion but you know it comes at the culmination Shirou confession to Saber, in the scene he called Saber a drawn sword that needs help so she doesn't get hurt, then had his inner monolog of how he didn't just felt sympathy but love for her and how he is thankful he ended up being a broken man with nothing to truly love because that spot has been empty since the fire, so she can now sit on that previous empty seat, and that even if he didn't have that annomality and value himself more than anything, she would still be above that, and finally him saying she loves her more than anything, and he reiterates that she's a drawn sword that needs his protection just before projecting Avalon, then the scene ends with Saber embrasing Shirou and saying the phrase "it makes sense your body would heal Shirou, you were my sheath" I honestly don't see it as outrageous to think that Saber quote is an acknowledgement that the author wrote after Shirou confession, and not just a "hey your body heals oh cool is because you have Avalon" And btw Shirou technically should jump in front of everyone who's in danger, but in the FATE route, he pretty much exclusively puts his body on the line just for Saber not for any other character, even though other characters also experience near death or death in front of him

ReCursed

Eh, you voted for them to not watch fate route? I would love to rewatch it with them as i watched it only ones when it got me into fate as my first fate media. Would be nice and not spoilery to watch it after heaven's feel

ReCursed

I think it only worked at that moment and next time it helped rin to bring him back after lancer attack. Then it healed him continuesly after saber was summoned

mimiyowa

I watched the deen/stay night anime a long time ago, I voted against it because it's really not a good adaptation of the Fate route, they thought it was the series' sole chance at getting an anime adaptation and the standard for VN adaptations was to collapse the different routes (e.g. Tsukihime). The middle act is spliced together from UBW and Heaven's Feel but then by the last 4 episodes they heavily course correct to the Fate route ending (at that point just play the VN). The Fate route is heavily front loaded to setup the Fateverse but they already had that through Fate/Zero + reading the comments. All in all, it's not something I'd want to see them commit 3 months worth of reactions to (at 2 eps per week), and would rather see them react to FsF, maybe The Garden of Sinners, Witch on The Holy Night, etc.

Kiyoshi Murayama-Nakama

I'm so happy to rewatch this series with you guys! One detail: Kirei is not Lancer's original Master. If you remember Caster's original Master mentioned Lancer's Master being a female and asked Kirei to give a note to her. Well, Kirei did meet her, killed her, and then stole Lancer and made him his Servant.
