that intro discussion is good. i think you guys should also research a bit about the Akasha and Counterforce. they were mentioned here in FateSN and FateZero but never was explained properly. these systems handle the summoning of the servants and guardians. you can watch the first 10 to 15 mins of Gigguk's "Badly Explaining the ENTIRE Fate Series in 30 MINUTES" video for this to get a (funny) general background and explanation

ReCursed

One thing to add to your notes - the more famous hero the stronger they are. But older heroes have stronger baseline as they are from age that everyone was stronger. So it balances a littel as newer heroes are still in the memory of people because of recency bias and older one while forgotten just that strong. Also heroes get area buff so for example Artoria would stronger in London then in Japan if we use only that excluding master capacity.

Oscar Medina

Here is something important about heroic spirit Emiya. While there is connection of him being a good archer as a student he was not like on a legendary level or something. As Guardian, Emiya was rather weak heroic spirit, he adopted the bow as mean to fight at a distance. Emiya's ability to win as shown with killing of Caster was in his ability to manipulate the battle field and create the circumstances for victory. On another note, the people under the church that Kirei was extraction mana from were the other kids that survive the Fuyuki fire. The church took them in to raise, but Kirei took the opportunity to use them as batteries. Like Gilgamesh said, as incarnate servant he did not need the extra mana to manifest, but he decided to accept as he was still under his oath to help Kirei find happiness. Something that doesn't get brought here, but in the extended material and in the games was the Gil actually drank his youth potion and experience every hobby and land in modern times between the Grail wars. While he enjoyed them as a child it would just reinforce his idea that there was too much excessive luxuries for modern humanity.

Kail Andrews

There it is, the best concept Fate has ever introduced: mana transfer. For you to understand, the original visual novel was an ecchi game, meaning sometimes it got pretty intense. This moments were the “mana transfer scenes”, originally this consisted in Shirou having sex with the character in turn for them transfer mana or other stuff. When the game was remastered they included a censor version of these scenes and those are the ones the anime adapted, here is a more magical ritual but the modo and implication is the same. Also funny enough; in the Fate route, the one that occours before UBW; Rin, Shirou and Saber have a threesome in order to recharge Saber and is the most hilarious and famous scene of the og game. The funny thing is that it was Rin’s idea and had to “convince” Saber, meanwhile saying things like “I’m surprised I swing this way to” and giding Saber and Shirou threw the whole thing. This is the reason Saber and Rin are a popular ship and the meme that Saber in Bi, because of how she treated Iriasvill and her interactions with Rin and other women.

The Anime Dude

But unrelated to this episode cuz I haven’t watched the reaction yet, but there’s a 10 minute special called “Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works 2nd Season - sunny day”. After you finish this season, would love to see the reaction to that special episode also. Basically just an alternate ending. (Since the Visual Novel & route that this series is based on has multiple potential endings)

Runhua Tang

"If they kiss, can Rin transfer mana to him?" About that... remember when we told you how the original Fate was a particular kind of visual novel? You can imagine what's the most efficient way of "mana transfer" in the original VN lol.

ReCursed

In the first vn there were very poorly written sex scenes))) they cut it in later releases but it's still part of lore. Exchange of fluids (blood or something else 👁️👁️) is important ritualistic practical part of magic. Injecting mana and stuff

Galleon

"How are you justifying THIS part of Gilgamesh!?" I mean, it's been 10 years, god forbid a man has a hobby. smh

Roy Mathew

As a Catholic / Christian the clearest example of the idea of just authority in modern times to me is is MLK Jr. --> He technically violated the laws of the South but he argued that since those laws violated the natural moral law and inherent dignity of human persons, they lacked genuine moral authority and thus there was no true moral obligation to obey him.

ByakkoByakuya

Gilgamesh is actually classified as Chaotic Good in terms of his Heroic Spirit alignment, and that makes sense because, fundamentally, he is a classical hero who is always on the side of humanity. He genuinely loves "humans." To him, Humanity itself is one of his greatest treasures. One of his titles is the "Wedge of Heaven" He was created specifically to serve as a means for the already weakened gods to continue ruling over the ever ascending humanity and keeping them subservient, but he ultimately rebelled against his creators and chose to give humanity the freedom to determine its own future. However, his love extends to Humanity as a whole, and not really to its particular individuals. As a Heroic Spirit, however, there are many other factors that influence his temperament, such as the era he is summoned into (the more ancient the age, the more benevolent he becomes) and the Master he becomes contracted with (he doesn't want a brown-noser like Tokiomi; he wants someone with spice like Kirei). So, on top of absolutely despising the modern age, Gilgamesh was also exposed to the cursed Mud of the Grail, which made him experience all the evils of humanity. He then spent the following ten years after the Fourth Holy Grail War traveling around the world, becoming increasingly disillusioned with how decadent and weak modern humans had become. He saw a multitude of people living aimless, complacent lives, which was a far cry from the society of his Mesopotamian empire, where everyone, regardless of social status, was expected to have some form of purpose and ambition. From his perspective, the humanity he had always looked out for hadn't progressed as a species; it had regressed. And they had grown too large in number. Humans had stopped being the "Humanity" he had placed great faith in. After all, a humanity that has stopped struggling would never be able to reach his idea of our potential, and he hated that stagnation. All of these experiences ultimately led him to the mindset of: "I gave you people the freedom to choose, and you chose to fuck yourselves up. Fine. We're starting over." Gilgamesh views the world as his garden, and sometimes a gardener needs to pull out weeds to keep his treasured plants healthy. And that's essentially how he ends up going on an all-out villain arc. From Gilgamesh's perspective, this is his own twisted form of tough love. He believes humanity has lost its way, and because he genuinely considers himself its greatest king and protector, he takes it upon himself to "correct" that mistake, even if his solution is essentially to wipe the slate clean and start over.

Sum Ting Wong

Gilgamesh has some amazing fate lore in his past. I don't want to spoil it, but it's genuinely legendary, and very different from his current portrayal. Once you understand his full story in Fate, a lot of what he does starts to make sense, including why he is so ruthless in Fate/Zero and Fate/UBW. There's always more to Gilgamesh, but explaining it would spoil too much. What makes him such a great character is that his greatness exists completely outside of whether he's good or evil. He simply doesn't care about other people's opinions or approval. He judges people entirely by his own standards: whether someone is worthy of his affection, respect, or even death by his hands (iskandar and heracles). His attitude is essentially that the world belongs to him and he alone decides who is worthy of anything. It's like he owns and rules the world, and dare I say, there is a bit of merit to it, unfortunately. That's what makes him so good.

Zen

Gilgamesh is, and will always be on the side of humanity due to his genuine love for them. You're already close on the mark regarding his morality, add that he's 2/3rd divine, and the very reason the Age of God ended, kick-starting the Age of Human. I mean, one of his title is literally The Wedge of Heaven. An interpretation of what you're seeing right now is "a parent disciplining his haggard/weakling of a child with tough love".

ByakkoByakuya

The mummified husks you see being drained for mana by Kirei were actually children like Shirou who survived the Great Fire. You see them in the earlier episodes, in the hospital when Shirou first meets Kiritsugu, where Kiritsugu talks to Shirou about adopting him. As orphans, they were taken in by the Church, but Kirei exploited what appeared to be an innocent act of charity to enact his evil. Gilgamesh even states that he didn't actually need the mana they were producing, which strongly implies that Kirei was doing all that shit purely to satiate his sadism. Those husks aren't even dead too, they're tortured souls whose own bodies have become their prison.

C

Yeah, let’s remind them next week in the reaction of episodes 23 & 24 so the week after that they can react to the last episode and Sunny Day together.

Sum Ting Wong

Also one very funny thing: all of this fate (about 30+ medias like anime, games, manga... about $7 billion franchise) was originally created from Fate/stay night which was an adult visual novel, also called a Dating Sim LOL. Some of the most peak writing, grand battles, philosophies and so many amazing animes, all came from a damn dating sim, this is soo funny

Sum Ting Wong

Amazing point!!, And also there is a bit you left out, mainly being post and pre enkidu, essentially caster gilgamesh (benevolent king everybody loves) vs archer gilgamesh (ruthless dictator who was actually summoned here)

Marcos cruz

Funny that you guys mention that " by kissing you could transfer mana" because originally intimacy was one way way they did transfer mana including in this scene, though this is the PG version. Also Archer(EMIYA) doesn't have the Tohsaka magic crest, he is from a very different timeline, pretty much the timeline splits the moment Shirou stops or doesn't stop Saber from slashing Archer(EMIYA) in their first encounter, in his timeline he doesn't stop Saber, so that Archer is incapacitated for most of the war, so he never learns about his future self, nor does he ever witnesses the reality marble Unlimited Blade Works, they find a different way to counter Gilgamesh in his timeline

Vedhon

you are under the wrong assumption that archer got with Rin but nasu(the author) said he didnt get with anyone

ByakkoByakuya

I don't think it's a spoiler. First paragraph all happened in his original legend. And the rest, essentially, Gilgamesh says flat-out in this episode, and can be deduced from the past episode in his discussion with Shinji. "It happened a long time ago. I chose ten servants and tried to kill the one that I did not need. What do you think happened, Shinji?" "Huh? They were all slaves, right? Then didn't you kill them all?" "No. I actually could not kill anybody. None of the laborers were meaningless in the old world. But this world is filled with extras. I believe there would not be a single meaningful person even if I sought through a thousand people. Man, this world has gotten so friendly to humans."

Jonno

3:45 It may surprise you to know its not uncommon throughout history to have "mounted infantry" which is essentially forces that use horses or vehicles to position themselves on the battlefield and then dismount to fight

The Anime Dude

Gilgamesh kinda spittin… back in the day if a guy accidentally died in a dumb way due to his own incompetence, that was that & he exited the gene pool - that’s called Darwinism. Today? There’s so many societal guardrails, & the softest & most incompetent people are thriving. He enjoys the capabilities of individuals… he once said there was not a single servant of his that was useless or that was replaceable, but at a certain point where there’s no trials to forge people into competence & there’s just millions of incompetent people that get by based on the work from the few? That’s an ugly world to him. Not saying I agree with it, definitely don’t wanna take it to the extreme conclusion he has of killing all incompetent people in a genocidal manner, but it is kind of a fascinating thought process. 😂

What makes Irish mythology special I think, is that it's the only celtic mythology that has really been preserved and written down extensively, rather late in the middle ages, as people still knew thoses stories in Ireland at this point in history (albeit modified by time and christian influences). I'm French, and Gaul was celtic before the Roman invasion, but most of those myths are lost now, not enough was written down and by the time it could have been it was too late people had already forgotten most of it. We still know a few things and a list of gods that were worshipped in Gaul, and in the end you see a lot of similarities with Irish mythology. All Celtic mythologies were fondamentally, just one diversified mythology that never got "unified" by some writers the way Egyptian, Greek or Germanic/Norse mythologies got "unified" (broadly speaking, still a lot of versions).

eXxCeZz

Its kinda funny you figured out the way to transfer mana is through bodily fluids more or less. Well to be precise it is that kind of video game. Saber is getting her mana replenished through the act several times in the visual novel x) After watching episode 24 I would recommend you watch the alternative ending titled "Sunny day". Its a ten minute episode giving an alternative ending. But I guess you could watch it in 2 weeks with the final episode 25. Before you start Heaven's feel

Cong Hui

The original Fate VN is R-18. Guess where the R-18 was. Rin was very cute. Unrelatedly Fate UBW anime has an alternate ending episode which might be worth looking into after.

Meteor

Gilgamesh gave Shinji a heart. That's nice of him.

Fabien

All routes of Fate/stay night (it's the name of the game) have the same writter, it's the creator of that fantasy world to begin with. So not just UBW no, but also Heaven's Feel and some other stories. Zero was written but another author later, but following those pre-established principles and lore.

The Anime Dude

@56:03 uh oh, Steph starting to piece together that Fate was an erotic game (eroge) originally. 🫣 In the lore of the visual novel, mana can be stored and channeled through bodily fluids like blood and saliva, making intimate physical contact a dense medium for exchange. So… Steph’s idea of a kiss working is too on point. 😂 It was changed later, but still… just thought that was funny.

Fabien

Regarding the watch order you mention, yes Zero didn't spoil UBW much and made you aware of some element your normally should have known through the Fate route (a story that you won't see here). So Zero kinda acted as an imperfect replacement for the Fate route in a way, to prepare for UBW. BUT, the issue was never with UBW: it's with Heaven's Feel, which is the route the 3 movies you'll watch later adapted. Zero spoiled some of the most significant plot twists of Heaven's Feel (to say the least). But well, that's just how it is.

Fabien

It's true even if the few sex scenes were only in the PC version, the PS2 version already having the alternative way of doing it. But yeah it wasn't the very first version.

Fabien

Even if it's true the 3 routes were linked respectively to 3 girls (Saber, Rin and Sakura), it didn't have the dating elements you'd expect normally in a 'dating sim' since it wasn't your relationship with one of them that made you access a route (except maybe HF with Sakura, in a way). For example, to access UBW, you had to finish Fate (the first route) and then choose to stop Saber with a command spell when she's about the slash Archer. The only difference then, was that in UBW, Archer wasn't badly hurt in the first few days and was in action. It wasn't directly related to Rin. It could be argued, that UBW is more Archer's route than Rin's route. The same way, HF is more than just Sakura's route. So I think dating-sim is a misleading name for F/sn tbh, it's just a visual novel with romance, fantastic stuff etc.

Nus Nus

Artoria is kinda in death limbo so she isnt like other heroic spirts, hence why she cant go into spirit form. The whole guardian thing hits her cause she also made a contact with the world to become one in exchange of letting her be able to participate in holy grail wars. She goes back to that hill everytime she "dies" till she wins a grail or gives up on it.

Stefan

With Gilgamesh (and this is my opinion, not lore), the way i see it, he literally is lucifer. Think about it, the catalyst used to summon him was the skin of the first snake to shed its skin on the earth, his eyes were snake eyes but RED, he claims ownership of the entire material world and his belief that humanity should be culled is (if you know your conspiracy theories) the same as the one the luciferian elite holds today, that there's too many of us walking around and that the earth is overpopulated. I'm fairly sure that's what the author thought of when designing him

Temojikato

FYI: Zero was released BEFORE UBW, you skipped the earliest season. Zero was the second season of Fate to release. This only goes for the anime of course. The only 'weird' watch order thing you've done is skip the first iteration.

Sergey (Horn)

I really didn’t expect to hear my own comment quoted, especially since it didn’t even get a like. That was a nice surprise ) P.S. I really like Rin and Shirou as a couple, but toward the end of the series, Shirou’s obliviousness does start to get a little frustrating

del

Finale is coming up soon. When you guys react to that, be sure to include the Sunny Day OVA. The series covers the “True Ending” and the OVA covers the “Good Ending”. Both endings are canon, just with different flavors.

mimiyowa

yeah I think she figured it out when she said something about us telling them about the original/source material lol.. that's also why she proposed s*x

del

Ok one correction on the writing. Fate Stay Night (including UBW and the upcoming HF) is written by one guy, Kinoko Nasu (which is a pen name that translates to Mushroom Eggplant). He has a team that worked with him on the game, but he is the writer. Nasu has written some of the other Fate series. And even when someone else is the main writer, Nasu still has full creative oversight and veto power.

Oscar Medina

Honestly for the better. They did had very funny fan translations though

Grisly_Adamson

I was so excited when you said you watched and remember Rurouni Kenshin. Peak Shonen of my childhood! You should absolutely react to the Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal OVA since you have some familiarity. Incredible movie.

Klinch

Gilgamesh and his plans should be classified as "End of Humanity" threat, right? Isn't the purpose of Guardians to stop such threats? Will this problem force Shirou to become a Guardian (for more power) ?

Grisly_Adamson

The original IP is Nasu's and he has mostly retained sign off power (including Zero) over the years of various Fate installments. Zero was written by Gen Urobuchi with Nasu's blessing, obviously with the express purpose of being a prequel to Stay/Night, UBW, and eventually Heaven's Feel. I so wish Urobuchi had done more writing for the Nasuverse - he has done some amazing work in Zero, Psycho-Pass, Madoka Magical; helped some with a manga volume of Black Lagoon; even his debut show Requiem for a Phantom was pretty good for its day and a first show.

del

Yeah Nasu made Gen “the butcher” urobuchi tone down the torture he put Sakura through in an early draft of Zero.

Nikolai Ilushko

According to Nasu (original creator of FSN), Archer comes from a separate timeline, closest to the Fate route. I don't want to go into further details because that could spoil the Fate route itself. My point is that the Fate route is important. What still pisses me off is that we never got a proper modern adaptation of the Fate route. It's especially frustrating for people who started with Fate/Zero and then moved on to UBW and HF, because they're missing a lot of key moments that are integral to the overall story. I just wish ufotable would finally complete the set. At least give us a movie.

Arjuna

Just to clarify what you said at the start about Sakura, her every cell in her body was changed so she could become a Matou mage. Hence, her hair and eye color is similar to Shinji's and other Matous.

Kiyoshi Murayama-Nakama

We're almost to the climax! I really hope you continue to watch Heaven's Feel and other Fate series. There are three main Fate Stay/Night series and each one is basically "Who becomes Shirou's waifu?" UBW is obviously Rin. The fun part of watching the others is seeing how much the story changes. Heaven's Feel will also fill the gaps in the story that UBW does not cover. Many fans even say that Heaven's Feel is the true sequel to Fate Zero.

Matthew Wise

Gilgamesh's philosophy can be understood from when he told the story about not being able to chose which servant to kill. "In my era, the number of humans was small, but each had a purpose. There were no useless people. To me, all humans were a valuable treasure... Once, I decided to execute a slave just on a whim. But in the end, I couldn’t choose a single one. Every slave had a role, an individuality, and a worth that made them too valuable to throw away." Gilgamesh collected all the treasures of the world, he values things that have innate worth. To him, people of this era exist for the sake of existing, they arn't needed, they don't add anything. You can see the same philosophy in his disdain for Shirou and his projections, not a real hero, not real magical artifacts, but fakes. It's not quite materialism, it's not quite individualism and its not really utilitarianism either. It's just things that are rare, unique and/or take time and effort to reach their true potential, those things hold inherent value, and things that are common, made without strife or effort, copies of hard work that came before, they are lesser and unworthy of him. I don't fully know how to articulate this but most of the people who like him, like a wiser version of him that appears in a different show. The version in this show aligns more with the Gilgamesh that hadn't yet met Enkidu or certainly hadn't gone on his quest for immortality. He is less wise and more tyrannical. But he does have the memories and treasures from his whole myth, so it's just his personality from before he did those things, but he still has the memories and noble phantasms from his whole myth. Also regarding the mana transfer scene, as you will have gathered from other comments, it was supposed to be done via intimacy but its been censored. they also over dramatise it. Rin doesn't give up her whole family legacy in this moment, she's just creating a pathway. Unless i'm misunderstanding and the anime is just going off script, but I think they just worded it badly.

Amaimon2D

They really need to watch more of the Fate vese animes to see more of Gilgamesh's character LOL

ChrisGrump

Watch Babylonia next. Then you will see the actual GOAT Gilgamesh.

Kidd

I don't think mages buying low-ranked mages' sperm in potion form to be magical batteries which power their spells is canon any more. That was such a panic lore addition to make sense of these sex scenes imo. It's never mentioned ever since 2006.

ReCursed

It is implied in some scenes. Also there is tamer version of criminal serial kisser if you know what I mean. Blood is used as constant. And sucuby like drain of energy from the sex has sense in the nasuverse lore, I just don't if there are sucuby

Shrimpy Jam

"The strong lives, the weak dies" reminds me of a character from Akame Ga Kill. Again nice reaction from you two, I get to understand them further with the breakdowns yall make. Just a question would you follow this up with the Heavens Feel Trilogy?

Shrimpy Jam

Holy, there's so much lore, i love fate sm

Vedhon

i hope he doesnt do much for it after what he did with zero

A M

Gilgamesh didn't lie in his monologue, but the details, which he omits, are what make the truth interesting. Unfortunately they can only be found in the VNs, Stay Night and Hollow Ataraxia.

Lone Wolf Knight

So to explain why a lot of us love Gilgamesh is complicated. So Heroic Spirits in Fate are technically just copies of their real selves. What happens is the "Throne of Heroes", a sort of record keeping dimension outside of time and space, keeps a record of all of humanities heroes. When a Heroic Spirit is summoned what actually happens is a sort of copy of whichever hero they're summoning is made from those records. An easier way of thinking about it is imagining the Throne of Heroes as a folder on your computer that contains files of every legendary hero. When one is being summoned, instead of removing the file from that folder you just right click the file, click copy, and paste it outside the folder instead. The original is still in the folder while another copy of it is used for whatever they were summoned/being copied for. So when we say we love Gilgamesh we're not really talking about this copy version of him that decided to be super evil after he was summoned, we're mainly talking about the original version of him that exists in the Throne of Heroes.

Mad4Life

I'm not gonna sugarcoat it, the mana transfer was sex.

MizukageSama

Also love Lancer Cu, hes so goated and finally keirei and shinji got what was coming.

Fabien

It's not the narrative order of the story. Zero as a story is to be discovered after UBW and after Heaven's Feel. Zero was the first fate anime made by Ufotable by coincidence. They just did the latest Fate available back then because they thought they would only do Zero and stop. It was such a success they did other Fate stories. That's why we are in this mess. Zero spoils the biggest plot twists of Heaven's Feel, because it's specifically written to be seen after. The good thing is, since there's no proper adaptation of the Fate route (the first anime by Deen isn't really the first route, it's more like a bastardized mix), Zero acted a good introduction for them to begin UBW, since UBW was never made to be discovered first either. The only real casualty here (and it goes for most anime watchers) is Heaven's Feel.

Temojikato

Did I not say I was talking about the anime? Most people's first contact with Fate is through the anime. So that's the norm. Not correct per se, but the norm. Also, HF being "hurt" I don't agree with. If you watch HF first then the ending of Zero is just anticlimactic. Now HF can still act as a climax.

able16

Are they watching the movies after UBW?

Shiroufan11

They said so in another comment. (HF trilogy)

Hello, wanted to add some historical context. Britain's destruction Saber is talking about is the Anglo Saxon invasion of Britain. Modern English people are a Germanic people who are descendants of Anglo-Saxons who crossed the sea from Europe. Meanwhile the native Celtic Britons were pushed to the edges and became the modern Welsh, Cornish and Bretons in France (they fled Britain itself). That's also why Great Britain is called Great since Lesser Britain is the Bretagne region in France. Of course genetically speaking modern English people are something like 2/3 native Briton and 1/3 Germanic. King Arthur's legend is sometimes identified with the Roman general Lucius Artorius Castus, a native Romano-Briton who defended the Celts from the Anglo Saxon invasion. If you remember Vinland Saga Askeladd is half Welsh, half Danish and he always identified with his Welsh heritage rather than his Danish side which's why he hated Vikings so much despite being one himself. Askeladd's true name was also Lucius Artorius Castus after the Roman general and his slave mother had placed all her hopes on Avalon, the mythical island where King Arthur fled to. I haven't read the lore but using historical context clues I'm pretty sure Saber is King Arthur who led the native Britons but ultimately failed to defeat the Anglo Saxons. The Anglo Saxons eventually won and settled Britain while the native Britons were assimilated and pushed to the edges becoming the Welsh, Cornish and Bretons. Saber regrets picking up the sword and wishes someone more competent could've led and prevented the destruction of Britain is how I interpret it.

eXxCeZz

They said so when they started the series

Dredgen Colin

Fate's iceberg might be the deepest in anime/gaming.

He can shove his views of "humanity" up his ass and worry about his own race of people and what they're doing. My ancestry is White European and thus has absolutely nothing to do with ancient Mesopotamia, their bloodlines, their culture, their values and morals, and so on. I care about his opinion and philosophy as much as I care about Genghis Khan's. Understanding his "point of view" does nothing to make me like him.
