I have mixed feelings about how Franky joined the crew. On the one hand, it was funny and I would never want it to be censored from the series. But on the other hand I don't really like that Robin is essentially the only crew member to have committed pretty serious sexual assault lmao. Especially towards a person that did so much for her. Part of me wishes that Oda had kept it at them stealing his speedo and that Robin would have given him a heartfelt speech or even a hug, asking him to join. It would have kept the weirdness but without, I suppose, tainting Robin's character in my view. But overall, I guess I wouldnt want to change Oda's vision haha.

W One Piece We finally see why Nico Robin has such a high bounty - she scary… poor Franky! 😓 Important foreshadowing at the end of the Blackbeard & Ace fight, love that important things are happening in the world that have nothing to do with our crew. That, + getting to see everyone’s hometown was nice! 1:54:00 this is one of my favorite moments in One Piece… after everything on Enes Lobby , when Luffy wants to go on an adventure & other crewmates are getting cold feet… Robin is just so ready & excited to go with him. I’m biased cuz she’s one of my favorite characters, and I know it’s a small moment most people wouldn’t think too hard about, but I love it. 😭 2:46:57 every zombie apocalypse movies needs a Luffy, big brain plans. Also, glad y’all are starting Thriller Bark in October. Just seems fitting.

My interpretation of Smoker saying that "rank is the most important thing now" and that "all the pirates in the world will start ceding the way for the straw hats" is that he thinks that Luffy and the crew will continue to climb even higher and that he needs to gain power and influence within the navy to match that. Though, it seems that he still wants to do it with integrity, since he declined (or at least seemed to decline) the promotion he was given for "defeating" crocodile at the end of Alabasta.

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned it yet, but I think pretty much all names in One Piece follow the Japanese naming standard: surname then given name. So, Monkey = surname, Garp = given name. Even the names that would sound weird in that order tend to follow that pattern. So, in Whitebeard's name, Edward Newgate, Newgate is his given name. Since you mentioned real life Blackbeard, the three characters mentioned here, Marshall D Teach, Thatch and Edward Newgate, all share parts of their names that are inspired by the real Blackbeard, Edward Teach (or Thatch).

The 0 is the paddle mode of the dock system, which is why there are two 0's, one paddle for each side of the boat. When they showed the numbers, we could even see that the two 0's were exactly opposite each other on the wheel.

I’m actually curious how the arc goes in One Pace. When I watched the original back in the day, it was around the Thriller Bark arc that the show started to lose a bit of its magic for me and it kinda started to feel like it was dragging on in certain parts. Not even saying it is a bad arc, especially since the ending is fantastic but overall, it is way too long.

Have they been warned about reading the episode titles or do they not mind spoilers? I don't know how One Pace does their titles but once they get into an upcoming arc, one title is a huge spoiler in the regular anime. Idk why one piece does that, it'll be like "Luffys past: Shanks loses his arm!"

Ooof, never saw One Pace's pacing for Thriller Bark, so many small jokes either cut or made to have shorter timing so they just don't land as well. Wish they didn't cut the funny bits as much.

I'm in agreement with you about Thriller Bark. It's the first arc I'd call "sub par" compared to it's predecessors, if only because the quality has been going up continuously. According to the Pace episode guide, they cut out about 50% of the total runtime for TB, which is the deepest cut until Dressrosa. So here's hoping the slow pacing was an anime problem that got fixed, and not just slow pacing of the manga as well.

Setting aside real-life standards for a second, since this is cartoon tomfoolery, I think you're interpreting this scene as Robin mistreating Franky? If so, I don't see it that way. I see it as her playing into his character. Franky is an exhibitionist at the very least, and an unapologetically flamboyant overactor who was already streaking and making a spectacle of himself. "Respect" might be a bad choice of words, but Robin's actions feel more respectful of who Franky *is* than a heartfelt speech or hug would. It was an act of mischief between friends, not an assault. This is in no way meant to be a defense of Oda's propensity for mature content. It's a defense of Robin, the character, who acted in manner in keeping with the world in which she lives and the crew (including Franky) she's a part of.

I’ve watched both versions, and it’s a tough call. It loses a lot of the comedy and character moments in One Pace that gave the arc some redeeming charm, but it cuts out the crazy amount of drag that made the arc a slog to get through. Kinda evens out and stays a meh arc, in my opinion, regardless of the version.

It's funny, sometimes you ask questions that gets answered a second later. very satisfying. I recently re-watched this arc. So, i'm very curious how much One Pace will cut down on the pacing. In anime, they generally draw bath, onsen with green water. It's like regular blue water is just water but green water is water with minerals that releases fatigue, tension etc. Contrary to popular opinion, I like this arc. it's funny but also has some badass moments. Since this is my first time watching One Pace, i can see that they skipped many parts/dialogues to cut down the time. Few of my all time favourite gags are getting cut half way/ removed all together and cuz of that gags are not landing properly. I feel like Thriller Bark was Oda's attempt of making a gag anime. it has nothing much of a plot going on aside from the comedy bits compared to other arcs. But I don't know... people who just watch One Pace might not feel that.

just fyi a lot of the times you've expressed confusion at what someone means lately it's just been a bad translation; it's gotten noticeably less accurate with figurative expressions since enies lobby ended. e.g. "fate has separated our ways" is actually supposed to be "this is a crossroads of fate"! it hasn't affected the general story so far so I think just take some more abstract quotes with a grain of salt 😅

I haven't read the manga, so I can't really speak on how funny the arc is in the manga but isn't the whole point of One Pace that they don't cut anything from Oda's story? They cut anime only stuff, filler, stretched out scenes, etc. And yeah, they obviously have to work with what the anime gives them rather than the manga, so it's not always going to be perfect. But maybe it's just not the best arc overall.

TB is in comparison one of the weaker arcs but it still has it's own charm. Trying to edit the original anime into something close to the manga itself is a big challenge. And they have done quite a good job. It's just in some places, they have to cut a scene halfway through a dialogue just to be accurate to the source and to remove the access scenes, which results in a bit of a choppy feel in a conversation the characters are having. That's what I was trying to point out. We just can't do anything about it. But One Pace also have a problem where they cut the negative space fillers of the impact scenes which are meant for viewers to process the stuff they just saw. One piece obviously does it to the extreme. But compared to a manga where the reader can stop and think about the stuff they read at any time, viewers don't get that time in One Pace. It has happened in previous episodes a few too many times that I wanted to comment on it. Other that that there's nothing wrong with One Pace.

Myself and a couple of friends joke about how it felt like it was 100+ episodes because of the times it'd drag a little bit.. overall I liked the arc though. This will be my first time watching the One Pace edit.. 22 episodes instead of 45? I think was original, already sounds more appealing but I do enjoy the comedy scenes and character moments and sounds like a few missing from Michael H's comment.

There are some dragged out bits that are good removals, but there's a lot of jokes and comedic pauses in Brook's intro that got the chop and made it jarring, at least to me who has seen the non-cut version.

Until now in this arc, it seems like One Pace is trying to overcorrect by cutting too many scenes. It is ironically messing up the pace more than the original anime. Still curious how it will end up, Thriller Bark is easily my favorite standalone arc so I hope the excessive dragging that gets removed will help it improve overall.

Thriller bark is one of my least favorite arcs. I am just not a big zombie fan and it feels like nothing really happens in this arc. Like every arc, the ending is good, but i didnt watch it in One Pace so it felt really really long

Yeah, One Pace does a number on this arc. It cuts a lot of drag in the middle, for sure, but it basically takes a machete to a lot of the funny moments, which is a huge bummer.
