This is an insane pair of episodes

Keiran Muntfront

Please look up how to pronounce Gigantomachina

Skull Knight

When this arc was being published weekly in the manga, everyone was speculating about Re Destro vs Gigantomachia. A part of me still wishes that fight happened, but this is great too

jason thomas

Quirks are genetic. Typically kids would get some variation of what their parents have or someone in their familial line. If they get a quirk that doesn't resemblance anything from their family it's considered a mutation, like what happened with Eri.

Addstir

I always perceived his dad hitting him with the stick as less of a direct "abuse" and outright trying to knock the kid out so he stops using his power. The initial smacking and overly strict nature is obviously too far, but the conclusion to the backstory is kinda "necessary". It's dandy to think that if your kid had a power to level buildings by touching stuff, you'd use kindness and love, but in that heat of the moment, the raw panic would take over anyone, and we're also so familiar with only seeing heroes that it's hard to remember that his father is a normal man, not a hero

Super Gamer Q

If you guys noticed everything happened in the past and we knew the league was with the liberation army already, and we even saw many of the members like Re-Destro, he couldn't have died in the fight

The Anime Dude

@1:10:10 think Steph is on point: it’s so dangerous to outsource your thinking as many who go deep into an ideology (of any kind, regardless of what it may be) tend to do - never stop thinking for yourself, don’t be sheep.

Andrea Duquette

The more you think about it the more you realize this guy has never felt peace his whole life imagine going through the most tragic thing a little kid could ever experience such as killing their family and forced to feel those feelings non stop and only copes with the rage by killing to get relief like I can’t even begin to imagine the pain afo clearly grooming him into seeing this as natural urges (also side note I found the parallels cute on how he he befriended the rejected kids to play with him when he was younger and than later doing that with the league when he was older)

Subarun

Early Reactors 2023 W&S would never had that much empathy for Shigaraki. I feel you would be more pragmatic and directly say his story wasn't a tragedy at all, remember demon slayer S1

Florida Man

They used to be much quicker to dislike a character too. Character development reactors they went from ESTJ to ENFJ

Shay

2:18 What about if you considered Mina an "Acid trip", cause she certainly feels like one (I jest, I jest😂)

RCG

Try to at least spell the name correctly if you want to complain about the pronunciation, lol.

rizqiefajar

S5 ep 23, the traumatic episode... 😭

Jack Witt

Did you notice the leitmotif that started playing during the scene where Decay first manifested on part of the ball and played until Tenko decayed Mon the dog?

Jack Witt

AFO is full of shit. He's very much an unreliable expositor. Tenko/Tomura suffers from a condition called psychogenic itch. It's the condition where your skin itches because of stress. Tenko/Tomura has a very severe case due to the abuse but it's a real condition not some BS about the urge to destroy. AFO's just manipulating Tenko to associate the itch with the human impulse to hurt what hurts us.

yuuno scraia

Hey i was wondering if, for the future, you could makr your reaction to an opening its own video like you did for rezero? Love to rewatch that from time to time and to know at which reaction you reacted to the opening is a hassle.

Renden

I think, after seeing Shigaraki's origin, we ask the question again: does the quirk influence the personality? Did Shigaraki truly want to destroy his family, or was he led to because of his quirk?

Renden

I figured that was just Shigaraki's leitmotif, but now you have me thinking 🤔

Addstir

Something you seem to misunderstand is "If he were loved, would he have manifested a different quirk?" - No. Quirks aren't a manifestation of one's personality; it's the opposite. The point they have been making is the opposite; e.g. Toga is obsessed with blood because of her quirk. Just having an "I drink blood to transform quirk" would be nonsense. It's the fact that when she got her quirk, she began to be fascinated by blood. The interviewer woman's point, and kind of the Liberation Army in general, is "You can't control who you are". Uraraka has a very uplifting personality and desire to make people happy because her quirk "lifts up". Tokoyami has a very dark and dreary personality and serious expression cause his whole thing is dark shadow. The thing it is true that quirks influence personality, but then the whole thing with the villains side is while partial liberation/understanding should be met (e.g. Toga's parents calling her a monster outright instead of understanding her and guiding her down a better path) there are the EXTREMES like Shigaraki who will naturally develop from this whose sole goal is total destruction.

Addstir

To add to my other comment and a much shorter answer: Quirks are entirely genetic, mutations occur (Eri), but personality does not create a quirk

Jack Witt

It's a Shigaraki's leitmotif. He has two.

Temojikato

Some Japan info: Tenko being ignored in the streets and the old lady walking away as soon as something seemed off is NOT because of quicks at all. It is actually a very accurate representation of the real Japan. The Japanese will always walk around a public problem instead of helping out. I'm not going to put any opinions, reasoning or anything in here as I'm not Japanese, but I can definitely confirm I've seen this happen a lot while there.

We need a notice on which episodes you watch the intro, because it's exhausting to go through each episode to find it

grasshorse

really glad to be watching this with you guys and your pov especially as parents! objectively I can look at shigaraki and think this is a child who unintentionally did something horrific and then was groomed by a monster, but my subjective feelings are that i find him immensely aggravating so I will still be happy when we get past my villain academia :')

Addstir

I mean, even in all cultures under basic psychology, the more people present, the less likely someone is to help, cause people tend to defer to "Oh, someone else will help, there's plenty around, I have somewhere to be".

carocatowr

I think its hard to imagine quirks affecting someones personality because well... we dont have quirks or superpowers, but I mean we are influenced by the way we are just as humans. Physically Im influenced to walk because I have legs so id imagine someone with fins would be influenced to swim, I have a voice so Im influenced to talk so I believe someone with a laser that comes out of their forehead would be influenced to use it. So again, with what you saw, do you think someone like Shigaraki who has the ability to destroy would be influenced to destroy just because the ability to do so is part of him? If there is constant thought in your head, an urge to use your arms because you can and you do, is it any different from someone with a lethal power? And if he does, can he be blamed for that? Would it be fair to blame someone for doing what their body was designed to do?

CallMeSignal

Aww, what a happy and carefree looking young man! Surely nothing horrific happened throughout his childhood that irreparably broke his psyche into his adulthood and compounds into a hateful and destructive personality!

D B

I think it's really sad that Shigaraki wanted his family to stand up for him to his dad, and they finally did when he raised a hand to Tenko... But Shigaraki never knew because his quirk manifested and killed everyone the same day.
