Western alchemic tradition (and also parts of eastern alchemic tradition, as alchemy is one of the few forms of mysticism that transcended borders) viewed mercury (which they called quicksilver) as the prime materia, the element from which all other elements are born. It was essential to basically every alchemic ritual or concoction. It was thought to be the universal solvent, dissolving all other metals and elements into itself, and represented the soul and the concept of change. Alchemists generally didn't perceive mercury as very dangerous, as alchemists worked with a variety of acids and toxic materials on a daily basis that easily eclipse the danger posed by mercury exposure, but they also wouldn't handle it casually as it was very expensive and very important to their work. Later on haberdashers did use mercury in hat production to treat animal hides. For clarity they were aware that mercury had toxic effects by this point, they simply didn't recognize the long-term effects of exposure to trace amounts of it. More interestingly it was also used as a treatment for syphilis, where they believed the sweating caused by consuming low doses of mercury would expel the disease. Shockingly, apparently this treatment wasn't completely off the mark-- while it certainly caused more issues than it solved, mercury treatment did result in a temporary reduction of syphilis symptoms for some patients.

Trueeee! I could've been more interested in learning history if they stop focusing too much on dates.

Counterintuitively, pure elemental mercury in its liquid form is actually quite safe because it is very poorly absorbed through intact skin or gastrointestinal tract. Drinking that that amount of mercury probably would not cause severe poisoning, surprisingly. What is dangerous is mercury vapour when inhaled (so you were right to leave the house when a mercury container was smashed since it can spread inhalable droplets), or (soluble) mercury compounds.

2026-10-30 16:00 In my country we learned a lot about the world history and World War 1 and World War 2, and specific country's For example (Japan, USA, Germany, UK and neighboring countries ). We also didn't really focus on dates we focused more on problems which led to solutions which led to consequences for short term and long term, also if we were in a period of time we did learn about important events that occurred and there order but not dates.

From Belgium. We didn't really delve into Asia either. Our history in high school went like this: 7th grade - Prehistory (human origins / evolution / nomadic hunter-gatherers to farming communities), Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, development of writing systems / religion / legal codes / architecture 8th grade - Ancient Greece (Athene, Sparta, ...) , Ancient Rome, the Gallic Wars, Gallo-Roman civilization, Pax Romana, rise of Christianity, fall of the (Western) Roman Empire 9th grade - Middle Ages = Frankish Kingdom (Clovis, Charlemagne), feudal system, serfdom, rise of Islam, agricultural revolution, Catholic Church, Crusades, guild systems, rise of Flemish cities (Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp), Franco-Flemish War, Black Death 10th grade - Renaissance humanism, printing press, Scientific Revolution, European exploration (Columbus, Vasco da Gama), colonialism, transatlantic slave trade, Protestant Reformation (Luther, Calvin), Catholic Counter-Reformation, Eighty Years' War (Spain & Netherlands), Absolutism (Louis XIV) vs parliamentary constitutionalism (England) 11th grade - Enlightenment, American Revolution, French Revolution, Industrial Revolution, Belgian Congo, World War I, Treaty of Versailles 12th grade - Russian Revolution, rise of the Soviet Union, the Great Depression, rise of totalitarian regimes (Italy / Germany), World War II, Holocaust, Cold War, nuclear deterrence, proxy wars, fall of the Berlin Wall, decolonization, creation of the European Union, globalization, migration, geopolitical alignment, contemporary conflicts

The way MaoMao cares about Jinshi is the same as how she cares about Luomen (and now Chou-u as well) : she pays close attention to him, wants to feed him good food and doesn't like people trying to take advantage of him, and she values his inner qualities and character more than his appearance (him getting that scar didn't change how she sees him, it's the contrary even)... At this point he's family to her and she's relaxed and satisfied with their current relationship ; that's why she keeps ignoring the fact that Jinshi wants more, also bc the situation they're in is complicated and Jinshi is not really free to do whatever he wants... Political marriage is not out of the equation yet, especially in these times of need, so he can't give her a 200% certitude that he won't give her up, and she can't do without it (I think that was the point Joka was making, saying that she is like her and Fengxian : they'll fall for one man only and so deeply... her mom losing her mind after being abandoned is smth that shaped MaoMao deeply and she would never risk to become the same, she wouldn't be able to recover) I'm pretty sure that Jinshi being beautiful and powerful doesn't help bc that means he has a lot of options and MaoMao doesn't trust power (remember in S1 the episode when she said to Jinshi 'the problem is not if you will or won't, it's if you can or can not') or beautiful people especially if they use their beauty to their advantage (like her big sis) ...which Jinshi has in the past so she didn't trust him at all in the beginning. No wonder someone like the quack is her ideal 😅 someone kind and harmless who doesn't attract unwanted attention due to their appearance or position When the crisis is over and Jinshi is 100% out of the Crown Prince race, I believe he'll be able to convince MaoMao but even then it's not gonna be easy : she likes her life as an apothecary, and even though she does have the qualities a leader('s wife) needs she doesn't really want that kind of burden... Also her marrying Jinshi would imply that she first fully and officially accepts Lakan as her dad so...not happening any time soon🤣🤣
