"Four Minutes": Series Finale

Comments

Jeff

I really loved this final episode, and was surprisingly moved by many scenes. The little moments between Abe and Midge, and Joel sitting in the audience beaming with joy and pride at Midge as she achieved her dream. Her "big break" performance had me in tears, as did the final scene of the enduring friendship between Susie and Midge. I'm so glad you guys got the chance to experience this show, and really appreciate it. Looking forward to "Arrested Development"! I only caught a few episodes when it was on, so it will be like a first viewing for me.

Finales are so hard because the expectations are so high, but I thought they nailed this one. Originally airing on May 26, 2023, 'Four Minutes' is Episode 9 of Season 5 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. It is the 43rd episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 9.5, placing it as the #1 ranked episode of this season and #1 out of all the episodes shown so far.

Wow it's over! So great to go on this journey with you guys. I always see Midge's ending as not really happy or sad it just... is... I think she can be lonely but she's not alone, she has Susie still. This is the life she chose for herself. She wanted a big life, she wanted to be famous and she achieved it. She made her decision and I don't think she's necessarily upset about it, but it IS still tough to see her by herself in that apartment. There has to be a trade off. Kevin’s instincts about Joel were correct. I guess technically you can interpret it however you want, but Amy Sherman-Palladino confirmed that Joel is dead in 2005 (everyone is) and that they never got back together. They just weren’t compatible in that way anymore. I was originally super bummed after the Lenny scene when I first watched because I hated the idea of leaving him in that terrible state (it was 1965 btw, 4 years past the current timeline and 1 year before he passes) but the Chinese restaurant scene brought it back around. In interviews, ASP and Alex Borstein said the idea was that Midge actually made many attempts to help him over the years and what we saw was her sending Susie in as a last resort in ’65. I love that the last scene in the 60s is Midge and Lenny because he really was her champion and the only person besides Susie who had faith in her from day one. Love that the fortune was with her during her big break, almost like Lenny was with her there too even though he wasn’t physically in the studio. I know you guys were kinda iffy on their hookup, but Luke Kirby does feel pretty strongly that Lenny was in love with Midge. Love that Joe’s favorite is 305! It’s my comfort tv episode forever. I feel like I can put it on and escape into that Miami world for a bit. Also, yes, COVID really made the show lose its steam + s4 was not well received by critics or fans really. Just a bad combo, but s5 did better. The show got back into directing and won cinematography again. Rachel, Alex and Luke were all nominated. Tbh it held up a lot better at the Emmys than a lot of shows because it’s so tech heavy. So glad you guys watched this show! It really is a gem. The Palladinos are currently filming their next show right now in Paris called Étoile and it’ll continue into the summer in New York with Luke Kirby and Gideon Glick (magician Alfie)! Hopefully you guys will get into that one whenever it comes out lol. And Gilmore Girls possibly? I’ll be there if you ever do! Bonus: here’s a better look at the board from the last scene https://i.redd.it/t95im29hql9b1.jpg It’s fun to see a bunch of memories from the show. Lenny, bail receipts, items from touring places (Miami, Vegas), family photos, etc. Like the rest of that giant apartment is for show and this tiny TV room is where she keeps everything she loves and where she watches Jeopardy with Susie.

also Luke Kirby (guest actor in a comedy) Sam Richardson won for Ted Lasso

looks like I've got 13 listed instead of 14 - correct - I will edit the above

Thank you so much for watching this show! When I love a show as much as this and there are no reaction videos to it, it's like an itch that I can't scratch. It's been a blast watching this with you over the last 43 weeks, and has really helped me to process and accept the fact that the show is over.

As someone who watched this show as it released each season (and subsequently many many more times after that) I think this ending is just perfect. I got exactly what I needed out of it. As we fade in to that chinese restaurant and I registered what was about to happen I wept like crazy, I was such a Lenny fan from the first episode and I hated thinking that that moment at the start of this episode was the last time we would see him, so getting that moment with them was so special. I had barely recovered from the tears before I realised the fortune she had was from that moment and it set me off again. Their relationship and his passion for her career was just so special and I will continue to rewatch this show over and over again just for them. Thank you guys so much for watching I loved seeing it all again through fresh eyes !

I have to disagree that it’s not a happy ending. It would be an unhappy ending if Midge was blind to the consequences of her choice, but she wasn’t. She and Joel never got back together because she didn’t REALLY want a husband. And he knew that. I think she could have lied to anyone else but him about that. She was married to her art. She loved that more than anything. It IS sad how her children were impacted by those choices. But she knew, she walked into all of it eyes wide open. I’m a professional artist. I have made choices to pursue that life that some would probably call sad or lonely. I was luckier than Midge though. The zone of impact of those choices was limited to me when I made them, because I grew up a white man who was told he could do whatever he wanted. Midge grew up in a world where she was told all she could be was a wife and mother, so she made those choices before she figured out what her true path was. When she found it, she refused to abandon it to go back to her “only choice.” The son in me, the man who would maybe be a friend to Esther or Ethan, calls that cold. The artist in me calls it pure. Because (and this is a hard fucking truth) very few people can devote their life to two things at once. There is always a sacrifice. Midge understood that. In a way, that’s what her routine on the Ford show was about. That’s what she learned from Lenny too. That’s the thesis of the show. You can’t have it all, not in this business. So choose. And maybe you suffer. Maybe you’re alone in a big penthouse apartment at the end of it all. Maybe it feels empty at night in spite of the ghosts in the picture frames. So you call your best friend, who made the same sacrifices, and you laugh until you’re dead. But at least you chose it. So many people don’t.

It's been awesome following these reactions, I'm so glad you two decided to react to this show. That being said, I think you both may have missed a crucial point of the finale. This isn't a sad ending. She in a previous episode has said she wanted someone who made her laugh and that was Susie. The love story here has always been Midge and Susie. Women choosing to be ambitious is often unfairly portrayed as a "choosing to be lonely" moment but that's not true in this case. She got the life she wanted and most importantly, chose for herself. Women having that right to choose is still a very bizarre concept for most people to comprehend and they often see it as a "sad ending" moment because it's not what they envision women to have. Amy Sheridan truly nailed this concept and depicted it in a very realistic way. Most shows don't land their finales.. this one did! Excellent run!

I would like to applaud your thoughtful and insightful analysis of shows such as The West Wing and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Your responses showcase intelligence and empathy, qualities that are highly valued and often lacking in our current society. One area of concern I would like to address is the potential for character judgment, particularly towards Rose, based on modern standards rather than considering the historical context in which they existed, especially in terms of societal norms regarding women. For instance, despite Rose's education, she was overlooked for a position on her family's board and excluded from decision-making processes regarding their relocation to New York. It was simply assumed that Abe's career was the priority. In today's society, there would ideally be a discussion about potential job opportunities for Abe in France. It is important to consider the limitations and expectations placed on women during that time period. Without Rose consistently showing love and support to her daughter in her formative years, Miriam may have lacked the courage and confidence necessary to pursue and achieve her dreams. While every mother desires their daughter's success, it can be challenging to admit when one's own aspirations were hindered by lack of support from family and society. Miriam recognized this dynamic, which is why she wholeheartedly supported her mother in pursuing her dreams later in life.

It was very moving. From the opening scene it had this melancholic tone. I thought it was emotional on every level and I loved every second. Even though it was well over an hour, I could have spent all day in that world.

Youtalkingtome

Lenny for sure loved her. I think a part of her loved him too. The show does have a happy ending but a real dark underbelly. It really makes you question why would anyone want to be famous? At the same time it is an exciting world and she is way too talented to not be. Great show and I can't wait to watch it again with the ending in mind

Youtalkingtome

It really was a beautiful story for the two of them. The Miami episode will remain one of my favorite episodes of tv.

Youtalkingtome

Yeah, I totally see what you're saying. I don't know what it says about me, but I do see it as sad. I know she is content and I'm happy that she stayed true to herself. It just seems like she passed a lot of the people in her life by. I know that's true to life, but the shots of her penthouse were very emotional. At least she has Susie.

Youtalkingtome

I understand that it's not "sad". That being said, yes her and Susie have made it to the top. It is sad to she her throughout the years and outliving everyone. It is sad to see these characters go and she is left alone and estranged from her children.

Youtalkingtome

Hey I really appreciate you saying that! Thank you for your kindness. Someone had to stand up for Rose! Lol. I understand she feels like she was never prioritized and it's true that she wasn't. This was the toughest season for her character. She was basically the heel of the show. That might be a little dramatic. Obviously Gordon is way more of a heel. She was very well written and performed. Fantastic character
