"It ran for 16 years on the BBC, they did nearly 30 episodes!"

Magnus Magnusson was the original host of Mastermind, a very (very!) sober quiz show in the days before Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. The show ticked almost none of the boxes a gameshow would usually have. No flashy set (just a black chair in a single spotlight), no music other than some iconic trumpet tones. Even worse, the first half of the questions were (very tough) general knowledge questions, the second half of the questions was on whatever particular specialist research topic the contestant chose, thus ensuring none of the viewership would have any idea of the answers. Obviously this recipe for disaster meant that the show was HUGE. And it is still going strong 50 years later. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mastermind_(British_game_show)

It's hard to overstate the importance of the American involvement in the Northern Ireland peace process, having an honest broker respected by both sides is a rarity. Lots of people were involved over many years obviously, but Bill Clinton and George Mitchell's contributions were especially critical, both in public and in private, hence the bit from The West Wing, "Brendan McGann cannot visit the White House" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aidF5mQ7bBY

That is indeed Enya singing. Before she was a global solo star, she was in her successful family folk group called Clannad. They came to worldwide attention for performing the haunting title theme for an amazing 1982 TV mini-series, a thriller set at the height of The Troubles, which follows a British army officer as he goes undercover to track down an assassin. Theme from Harry's Game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zHTcxVjX0I The mini-series is based on the 1975 book of the same name by one of my favourite authors, the crazy-prolific Gerald Seymour. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerald_Seymour I see Harry's Game is available on various YouTubey links, well worth a watch, but caveat internet emptor obviously.

“I’M A DERRY GIRL!” Instant waterworks. Also I’ve never been to Northern Ireland, but I will say that Ireland is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been.

That, and the girls turning away from Clinton because they were so happy to see James back completely broke me.

I love this episode! One of my favorites. You guys obviously know that there is another season, but I've always felt that if this had been the end, it would have been a really satisfying one. One of my favorite things is that we never get to see James really make the decision to say. Did he ask his mom a question and realize that Michelle was right? Was it something else she said that just hit home? Did he look at a picture and realize that there was no one in London he had missed as much as he would miss these girls? It doesn't matter--whatever happened, or didn't happen, he decided to stay. That's the important part.

On the Talking Derry Girls podcast, one of the hosts is the daughter of the man who was Mayor of Derry during Clinton’s visit. The creators of Derry Girls borrowed her mother’s dress that she wore on the stage with Clinton at the Guild Hall. You can see the actress/extra wearing it in this episode.

This last scene with James and the girls (well...The Derry Girls !) always gets me :')
