"Did my friends feel this way? That I was ssssad?"

Weird Magic

After last week's posted, I binged this one and the finale. Very much looking forward to it from J&K!

Every time that techno beat starts I have a physical reaction. My adrenaline just SPIKES. And no matter how many times I see it, John Spencer breaking out into a run makes me tear up every time.

Michelle Taylor

This season commences with an exciting two-part premiere and culminates with an equally remarkable two-part season finale. The path that Sorkin navigates us through is full of unexpected twists and turns, keeping us engaged in the journey without worrying about the destination. The end result is truly awe-inspiring.

Pam Nail

And now you know why there are no Jean Paul defenders! This episode is my #5 for the series overall and #1 for season four. Director Alex Graves CRUSHED this and the "Angel" sequence (great song choice, btw) is the most incredible tone shift the show has pulled off so far. We have a handful of plots, leading to the back-and-forth between conversations, from the light (Josh babbling to Wesley) to slightly serious (Amy/Donna) to slightly more ominous (CJ and Danny), etc. and how everything but the Zoey stuff drops away as we realize something is wrong. There is one more episode in this season. [rot13 for spoilers] Frrvat Wbfu pbafvqre Yrb nf gur irrc XVYYF ZR orpnhfr ur IREL ARNEYL JNF va gur svany frnfba. I've watched this episode dozens of times and my heart still races for those last few minutes.

Weird Magic

There was no plan to move forward, Sorkin basically told John Wells - I got nothing, good luck - and then never watched the show after he left to see what happened. EYES UP on the guest stars in the next one again guys! So far so good - you've missed Matthew Perry and Taye Diggs so far... Originally airing on May 7, 2003, 'Commencement' is Episode 22 of Season 4 of The West Wing. It is the 88th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 9.0, placing it as the #2 ranked episode of this season and #9 out of all the episodes shown so far.

Please don’t make us wait a week!

Devon Cooper

And here we go!!!! Boom! Been waiting for this one all season with you guys👀👀

Martin Nicholls

Just Sorkin casually dropping bombs on the way out the door. If you had no idea that was coming, everybody has done well. Also, yeah, Sorkin loves to murder Secret Service agents :p I think the next episode will surprise you in many ways.

Cosmic Slice

Everytime you guys watch an episode...I just can't wait to see your reactions! It's like...you've got some crumbs on what's coming but you are not prepared for what's *actually* coming. And I'm always so excited for you to get to the next one!!

Curtis Higareda

Thanks for posting on my comment about it possibly being a spoiler. I didn't think it was, but I might also take it for granted since I've been through the show so many times so i deleted it....Don't want to ruin anything for anyone!

Martin Nicholls

There's a conversation about the actual thing that you mentioned in the next episode is why it might be considered one..

Youtalkingtome

I know it isn't the most important takeaway, but I really hope Jean Paul is doing time in Leavenworth next season.

Youtalkingtome

Thanks for being here with us! Yeah, this show does a great job of weaving inevitable story lines (Shareef's assassination becoming public was a logistical certainty) with exciting surprises (Zoe!!!).

Curtis Higareda

Oh man, so true.... well I'm glad you commented quickly and glad I saw your comment quickly..I have to be better! lol

Jake

Just saying, you don't have to wait a week to watch the next episode!! ;)

Peggy G

Usually, we'd tell you to avoid the cast credits at the beginning of the next one, but fear not - I watched ahead to double check & the name ain't there. I'll happily explain next week.

JVTrickypants

To add a bit of levity, Tommy Schlamme said it took an incredible amount of takes and that no matter how great of an actor John Spencer was, he didn't believe he'd ever run before in his life lol.

trenton gragg

Rarely did television shows, in this era, do a callback to a first season episode. The ending goes all the way back to Bartlet giving that speech to Zoey in Episode 6 “Mr. Willis from Ohio”.

Holly Colclasure

I've been waiting for y'all to get to these episodes since I started watching your react videos. Since I didn't watch these when they first aired, I have never waited after this episode and so I haven't really paid attention to this as an individual episode, so watching it this way was great. As much as the tone of the show was light initially, it mentioned the traumatic history of multiple characters throughout and how it has impacted their lives. It just really stuck out to me on this viewing.

Michelle Taylor

“Jean Paul isn’t a bad character. He is just written that way.” Jessica Rabbit 🤪 Sorry I couldn’t resist. Roger Rabbit is one of my favorite movies and this is one of my favorites lines from the movie. 💕

You guys hit the nail on the head that the last 15 minutes of this show transitions it into an era where it feels like they can go in new directions (e.g. political thriller). I’ve watched S1-4 a ton, and have seen a lot of S7, but almost nothing in between. (I find new media emotionally taxing, so please don’t take that as any rating of the show!) I’m excited to forge ahead with you. Also, the next episode has the BEST Toby moment in the entire Sorkin era, IMO. I thought we got it in this one and was devastated that I have to wait another week . . .

Jeff

I've been waiting so long just to watch your faces during the final sequence of this episode, and you didn't disappoint!

Cristy

This takes me back to Toby's "ginger, get the popcorn" line lol.

Cristy

That was THE best reaction, guys. I wish I was watching it for the first time too. All the action/drama aside, Will's interactions with the President crack me up every time. I feel like his introduction has been quite seamless and he fits in so well with the team. Also, I love when Danny comes back into the show. Him and CJ have the best banter and chemistry. Can't wait for next week!

Taylor

I love the emotional aspect of him starting to run, and it truly gets me every time. BUT, his arms just don’t seem to understand what it means to be running lol

Peggy G

There's a story to it - I'll regale y'all after they've seen the episode.

Youtalkingtome

Yes! This episode was yet another of Sorkin's great fake-out episodes (the tone is generally light and the stakes not incredibly high until things go completely off the rails).

Jordan MacQueen

Please Dont Make Us Wait A Week .. I bbeegg of you

Paul T Hewes

the last person you want telling you that "We have a situation" is Agent Ron Butterfield.

Zachary Loeser

Over 20 years later, and my heart rate still spikes whenever I hear "Angel" by Massive Attack. And once again, Sorkin gives us a brilliant misdirect. First, the teaser with Leo as a potential VP. Toby's house plan, it's so adorable! Wow, Bartlet is acting like a hilarious empty nester, also adorable! Then the left hook with the callback from the first season. Peak Sorkin. The 4th season is a little uneven but man did Sorkin end it with a bang.

Zachary Loeser

Also, you guys remain what I'm pretty sure are the only two people to watch the West Wing and *not* immediately and constantly ship Josh and Donna. Their chemistry is literally why Janel Moloney became a main cast member!

Paul T Hewes

The VP and the fifty other loose plot potentials (including Toby's kids) was literally Sorkin throwing out things for the writers after him to be able to pick up

Aude M

And even then, it's ok, their "opinion" (not the right word, sorry) is valid :!

Youtalkingtome

I can't wait. This was a master class piece of writing and I have complete faith that whoever takes the reins will do amazing.

Youtalkingtome

If the writers can make it work, I'll be on board with almost anything. They do have great chemistry I just see them more as siblings than anything else. Things certainly have changed though.

Balazs Foldes

I totally agree with you, the writing in this episode is really strong. But what really helped it hit, was the direction, the mood setting things. The way they use the music, the lights, the atmosphere. You just feel it, stronger and stronger, that something bad is happening, you feel off balance, and you don't know, where the strike will come from. And, in the end, the momentary flashes with the abduction things, going white... just so powerful. And yes, West Wing Season 4 ran at the same time as 24, Season 2. So, a bit of inspiration, for sure...

Sarah P

I agree that I think their chemistry is justified, but I also loooove Mary Louise Parker and her performance in this show so much, that it hurts a little that one got picked over the other for what to do here. But I also adore the tension between them in this episode! It’s glorious.

Daywalker

Sorkin had a plan but left it open-ended so that the new show runners can take it whatever direction they wanted.
