Ryan's link to the White House and being a "Pierce, Pierce" Is Franklin Pierce. The 14th President of the United States. 2 before Lincoln. Fun fact, George Bush Sr, ol 41, had a wife named Barbara, who's maiden name was Pierce. She's the real life example of a "Pierce Pierce."

No matter how many times I watch, I always forget this episode is the beginning of the Ryan era. I think I always see the first two episodes as just a continuation of the previous season and the next episode as the “true” start of the current season.

I like the subtle trick they do with the speeches - early on Will and Toby are arguing over the first speech, and will asks if he should start on the second speech and Toby replies "you already have" implying the tone of his first is actually more appropriate for the second. Then obviously Bartlet uses the second speech as the basis for what would have been the first speech.

I cannot *wait* for next week... waiting each week for reactions is almost as hard now as waiting to the show originally. Minus the summer breaks! :)

This episode handled all of the internal west wing conflicts so expertly. In a lesser show, the Republican characters would have all been "bad guys" trying to create problems for our "heroes". But here, everyone had valid points and intentions, even though they disagreed. The mutual respect shown between Bartlett and Walken at the end was quite moving. When the show was first aired, I remember thinking that this would be the final season, assuming it couldn't survive without Sorkin. Instead, it became a slightly different show with the same level of quality, and continued through season 7. Next week's episode has some of my favorite and most memorable moments of this season.

Ryan the Intern, oh man he's so much fun. I will miss John Goodman, I really did enjoy his guest arc (and that scene between him and Debbie especially).

The West Wing did get a "Guest" nomination for Season 5, but unfortunately it was not for John Goodman. On a more fortunate note, someone is still coming this Season to give you that performance :)

Originally airing on October 1, 2003, 'The Dogs of War' is Episode 2 of Season 5 of The West Wing. It is the 91st episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 8.1, placing it as the #6 ranked episode of this season and #56 out of all the episodes shown so far.

The “All the President’s Men scene with the pollster was real life forcing some creative decisions. The actress was also on another show at the time and scheduling didn’t work out to get her to set, so it became a location shoot instead so they wouldn’t have to recast.

That's so cool they came up with this on the fly. It's really smart thinking and a great creative choice.

It was great to see Republicans actually be classy and non-political. "We're not stupid, Josh. If we try to use this it'll blow up in our faces. We'd seem callous and unfeeling, in contrast to Bartlet's extraordinary gesture of courage and patriotism." Also calling Josh out for having "a particularly craven way of looking at politics." Sadly, you've already commented on how the new speaker seems and yeah, Haffley is not from the same cloth and will be a bit of a pain.

Also, the different camera angles come from two directors that Schlamme hired, Alex Graves and Chris Misiano. There are others in there, but they basically stepped into the Tommy role and eventually become executive producers. They are awesome.

One thing that bugs me with this episode is the introduction of Ryan. Though it seems like he could be a fun character it feels like he was kind of shoved in there as an opportunity to add some Sorkin-like light banter; but it wasn't woven in very well, just an awkward chunk in the middle. Also, I can't picture Leo spending time during this crisis to shuffle staff around and saddle Josh with a distraction.
