if you like Peter Dinklage now. Just wait. He's the only decent one in the entire family.

This isn't something specifically about you, rather a reflexion from watching various people react to this show. There are new characters introduced all the time, and the first instinct is to wonder, is this one a good guy or a bad guy ? But I find that these concepts of good and evil are largerly irrelevant here. This isn't Lord of the Rings, with its heroes and villains ; here all characters have their own sets of values, their own ideas of what's acceptable and what is not, their own goals and varying lengths they'll go to in order to achieve them. A detail I want to mention about Lord Varys : when he talked about his little birds, it's not some magical 'talk to the animals' sort of thing, that's how he refers to his spies. Finally, a major problem with reactions to this show is, sadly, spoilers ; maybe you've thought of this already, but it might be a good idea to have Kevin look at the Youtube comments before you do, so you don't get anything major spoiled.

One of the things that got wrapped into the general prudish reaction to this show was the fact that theres no one clan to clearly root for: dispense with heroes and villains and the show starts making more sense - otherwise you box yourself into wishing a character had LESS dimension so that they fit those categories.

Good and bad are all but worthless as descriptors on this show. Heroes and villains change as often as events. Robert looks like an okay guy in the first episode. A little entitled and rough around the edges, but he IS a king, after all. But here we see the darkness in him, the ugliness. Mark Addy is such a brilliant actor, though, that we see the pain behind it. When GoT is at its best, it uses fantasy tropes to support the humanizing notion that there’s potential for good and evil in everyone, and that no one is ineligible for redemption or corruption. It’s a question of what they choose.

Jaime Lannister was the youngest to ever be appointed to the Kingsguard at the age of 15 (at least in the books) and not without reason. Now he is legit one of the deadliest men in the Seven Kingdoms.

For sure. The show has been on for so long that I am aware of certain events. I have no idea the context though. For example I know Sean Bean isn't going past Season 1. I have no idea when or where it happens. I do like the concept of there really not being good or bad guys. Everyone is barbaric in some way. Makes this fantasy world far more compelling.

Great point. However I am going to hate certain characters. Jamie straight up sucks but I did love that scene he had with Robert. He's fully dimensional and briefly won me over. Then you remember how messed up he really is.

It feels gross at times. I do like that it adds realism to the show. We are seeing in this episode how political it can get. That aspect is interesting and feels very seedy.

One tidbit of info revealed in this episode the head of the troops at the Wall and your James Bond guy have the same last name. I figured you missed it with the tons of names being thrown around. The old man at the council meeting may seem familiar too if you have seen Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

There are a handful of great characters, some noble, some just epic. Tyrion is by far my favourite. Most people in this world kinda suck, lol.

I've seen interviews of them both separately and they have nothing but nice things to say about each other!
