I'm stoked for this one! Y'all got to meet Lester Bangs, finally!

Youtalkingtome

I kept waffling on if he was a real person or not (I was unconfidently sure I had heard the name before), but he was! And Phillip Seymour Hoffman was, as always, fantastic in the role.

Michelle Taylor

Jason Lee did do the vocals for this movie.

Couple of things The music for Stillwater was written by Peter Frampton and Nancy Wilson ( who was married to C Crowe at the time. The guy who paid a case of beer and $50 for the band aids was played by Peter Frampton.

So make no mistake: this movie was absolutely love letter from Cameron Crowe to that first tour he was invited along on as a 16-year-old with...(drumroll) The Allman Brothers Band. The "Tiny Dancer" scene, when Penny tells William "You ARE home..." and William realizes that for him at that moment, she's right. He could've left the tour, for sure. For all his complaining though, he didn't want to. And yep, Crowe really did graduate high school at age 15. And as others have noted, Lester Bangs was real, looked like that, talked like that, and was an incalculable loss when he died (ironically) getting himself cleaned up. The vast majority of music writers from the 80s, 90s, 2000s and beyond want to be Lester Bangs. You asked about the couple glimpsed in the hotel room. That (I think) is supposed to be Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris. If we think that this movie takes place in the spring and summer of 1973, Parsons would've died about 6 months after we see him in the movie, in September of that year. And finally, Penny Lane is based on a real person, someone who befriended a young, teenaged Crowe pretty much like here in the film. Pennie Lane Trumbull has had an absolutely fascinating, successful, extraordinary life on her own terms and is worth googling. She seems awesome, to be honest.

Thank you! That is a lot of great information. Cameron Crowe has really had quite an interesting life. I looked at several pictures of Parsons and Harris based on your guess, and that really makes sense.

If you watch this movie again, go for the director's cut!

You guys should definitely check out Singles at some point. It's not as good as this one but it's still well worth seeing.

Michelle Taylor

Jason had this hilarious show called My Name is Earl. It's so good, you should definitely check it out when you get a chance!

I went to see Peter Frampton in concert and he was awesome! This was back when concerts were held in arenas, not stadiums, so it felt way more personal.

I thought you were going to do the Harry Potter series, no?

I love this movie and I haven't watched it in years, so thank you. Yes, it's semi-autobiographical. Cameron Crowe was on assignment as a teenager for Rolling Stone, and Rolling Stone had no idea how young he was. The movie is an amalgamation of several different touring experiences he had. When his mother saw the movie, her first question afterwards was whether the deflowering scene actually happened. Crowe admitted that it did. Also, the guys were really playing and singing. They did hours and hours of rehearsal to get comfortable with the two or three songs they did, particularly Fever Dog.

The "lock the gates!" promoter guy was played by stand up comedian and Podcaster Marc Maron. He uses that clip in his podcast.

He did direct & write Say Anything and it is definitely up there with my favourites from him.

Paul Verburg

Thanks for making me watch this movie again. It’s been a while.

Chris Warner

Williams sister was so cool she gave him a copy of Blue a couple of years before Joni Mitchell recorded it.

What are you doing to people. You watch the theater length version and everywhere I look online just has the 2 hour 41 minute version.

Youtalkingtome

That's amazing that they actually performed it. Knowing now that Crowe is all about authenticity, that makes sense

Some of the bands and artists that Cameron Crowe interviewed as a teen were: The Eagles, Steely Dan, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, David Bowie, Neil Young, and the band he actually toured with as noted above WAS The Allman Brothers....

Kate Hudson and Frances Mcdormand were both nominated for supporting actress, but lost to Marcia Gay Harden for Pollock. It is funny that you mentioned the manic pixie dream girl, because Kirsten Dunst's character in Crowe’s Elizabethtown is the first time that a character is described as a MPG in a movie.

Holy Cow, I've been checking out some of his writing. It enhances this movie so much. What a life he has lived
