House of the Dragon is a prequel, and yes, the protagonists are some of Viserys and Daenerys' ancestors. But it takes place far enough in the past that the two shows are completely independent. About what you said at the end of the episode - 100% agree, the background lore is one of the strongest points of GOT. And there's only so much of it they could cram into the show, which is why they made bonus "Histories and Lore" episodes ; there's one per season, and they're meant to be watched after the last episode of each season. Spoiler-free and well worth reacting to in my opinion ! As for the books, while they are indeed excellent, I would recommend waiting until you're done with the show, because the differences between the two are so significant that you would likely get characters and storylines all mixed up in your head.

George RR Martin's style is closer to Frank Herbert than Tolkien in that heroes are never all they're cracked up to be and good doesn't always prevail.

Chris Warner

The show may be most famous for its sex and violence but I think it is truly great when it is basically a medieval version of The West Wing.

i read the books after season 3 aired. i wouldn't say i got characters or storylines mixed up after that, but i was probably more aggrieved, coming straight off the books, by the omission of certain characters and storylines and by some other ways the show diverged. so i agree you may be happier with the show if you wait longer to read the books. but if you like history and lore, you'll love them - and i second watching those specials after each season. also, if you wanted to do the occasional book club video to report on your progress reading the books and what you think of them compared to the show, i'd definitely watch them - and i bet some of these other nerds would too.

". . . even though he pushed a child out of a window." to prevent that child from telling anyone he was boinking his sister. none of these characters . . . okay, very few of these characters are entirely black or white - and i won't dispute that jaime presently appears more grey than black. but let's not forget the twincest among his deficiencies? 😉

This episode has so much exposition - and "sexposition" - but as you say, it's necessary and really interesting. With so many characters and so much history, we need those backstories laid out for us so that we have more investment in what's going on. Most shows are terrible at exposition, but I think GOT and The West Wing do it pretty well (though The West Wing kinda overdoes it with "Let's explain to poor Donna this government thing she's never heard of"). I'm glad they had the Jon and Sam interaction in this episode. We needed something warm and happy amidst all the anger, hatred, manipulation and violence.

I like the idea of an occasional book club. I will indeed hold off on the books then. I just can't get enough of this lore

Youtalkingtome

Yeah, he's for sure into some weird stuff. That is what is holding me back from rooting for him. Far more than the attempted child murder....I have a line lmfao 🤣

Youtalkingtome

I totally agree with the Jon and Sam bit. As a said in the episode, I don't mean it as a criticism at all. I am completely enthralled with the exposition. It's like being told fantasy stories as a child or maybe even a campfire story. I am completely engaged every time

Roland Cooke

Revisit the hooker in the bath scene, some excellent non~spoilery foreshadowing there.

Roland Cooke

Another game for you ~ which characters will have the most extreme character arcs?

Roland Cooke

Great analogy, except that TWW is mostly full of good people trying to do the right thing....

Youtalkingtome

It was a very strong scene, seeing him open up for a second, I thought there was gunna be some sort of soft side to him. Nope. He's still as self concerned as ever

Youtalkingtome

I like this. Okay. If I'm gunna predict anything right now. I'm guessing Sam, Arya, hmmm maybe Jamie? I like what they have been doing with Jamie's character the last few episodes. You completely hate him in the first one and each episode highlights that he was genuinely heroic. So many people have respect for him. Is that because his family is royalty? Maybe. It's all so interesting and those are my predictions for now

Roland Cooke

Good ideas, and you're on target with at least one of those. But if you want to take the challenge to the next level, now consider which current major power player (aside from Ned Stark) has the most extreme arc from here....

The Inedible Mattman!

This is the first time I'm watching these episodes since I first watched Game of Thrones. Since I've been watching House of the Dragon lately, i've been yearning to rewatch GoT. I had forgotten how AMAZING these actors are, and how incredible this show is based on where we are here, and where we go FROM here. To give you a non-spoilery answer to one of your questions in the video, House of the Dragon is set about 200 years prior to this show, and is about the Targaryan family and their internal war for the realm. It's actually really cool to listen to the listing of the dragons in the bath scene, because for some of those I can go "Dude that's THAT dragon!" ... it's really an exceptional way to tie things together. I've said before and I'll say it again ... Ned Stark is the best man in all of Westeros. He just is. Every move he makes comes from a noble heart, and the way he treats his family is the kindest way to do so. He genuinely loves his family, and has respect for the realm. You can see it in his children, and how they respond to the world, too. Well, maybe except for Sansa who comes off as just the world's biggest spoiled brat in this episode! haha Great reaction, can't wait to continue the series with you!

Youtalkingtome

Ned is definitely the man. I have enjoyed his nobility from episode 1. Even though he beheads that poor guy. He did it because well, rules are rules. It wasn't vindictive and he did it with honor.

heheheheheh

Ned Stark didn't behead an innocent man. Night's Watch is for life and if you desert it, you know the punishment is death. WE know why the guy ran, but as far as everyone else in the show, the white walkers are just an ancient myth.

Youtalkingtome

Yeah, that was on me. I get why he had to do it. It just sucks because we as the viewers understand why he is running. The poor dude was dead either way.

jimmy2k4o .

Viserys' actor Harry lloyd is a descendent of Charles Dickins and Jon's Actor Kit Harrington is a direct descendent of Sir John Harrington the inventer of the flushing toilet. so his family money is toilet money haha
