So, you've met two of my top three favorite characters on the show - Tyrion and Bronn! It'll be a little while before the third one makes an appearance. The King and Queen scene only happened because the episode was short and they didn't have money to film anything more epic. But luckily, it turned out to be an amazing scene.

I'd read the books a few years before the show started, and forced all my friends to watch the show, and this was really the episode that got them fully bought in. The over-the-top use of nudity and sex to make exposition more enticing was one of the biggest criticisms aimed at the show at the beginning, nicknamed "sexposition".

The intro does change from episode to episode, so keep paying attention to pick up on context clues. I love all of Mark Addy's exposition scenes. He just has that gravelly voice that lends so much weight to the material. And it really fleshes him out, he's a fat whoring drunk of a king, but he knows military strategy, and he fought hard for a good cause that's now gone. The earlier seasons were known for being gratuitous. The later seasons are too, but it feels a little less like they're doing it for shock value. Maybe we just got used to it, lol. I think this show does a better job of pacing than a lot of other shows with many storylines happening at once. By ignoring the Wall and the Dothraki for a week, they were able to actually move things along at King's Landing and the Vale.

I made that joke in the last episode! I have purposely avoided the show, from what I've seen. My friends loved it and out of spite I have avoided it. It's been amazing so far.

I'm way more interested in those storylines anyways! Mark Addy has been fantastic. Honestly had no idea he was in this show

Game Of Thrones doesn't get off the ground without a bunch of predecessor shows, most notably Rome, which taught HBO many expensive lessons! Rome is fantastic, you can see where the money gets spent, but was also infamous for its graphic nudity and sex. I think it works, and certainly helps define that this was not a child-friendly show.

Just to provide some perspective from a different cultural standpoint - in my country, this show was jsut as big a hit as it was on your side of the pond, but people barely ever mention the sex and nudity as a salient point. The American discourse around it, by comparison, really highlighted to me how differently we consider these matters, with the US still being very influenced by its Puritan roots. I think for us, fiction should strive to feel true to life, and sex is a normal part of life ; so as a director, if you're hiding that part because of your own prudish misgivings, you're not really doing your job. Then again, I'm given to understand French cinema is infamous abroad for its liberal depiction of sex, so maybe we're the odd ones out 😉

i've never heard the word "gratuitous" more times in my life

I have no problem with sex scenes in films. It's just done to a degree that's not common in shows, especially fantasy. I am not of the opinion that sex scenes are unnecessary. That discord has been making its way around twitter and I couldn't disagree more.

Don’t feel like you are the last person to watch this I know at least 3 other channels that started it recently.

Great series, I'm looking forward to every new episode. However, I have a small complaint. When you're filming by yourself, your mic setup seems to be picking up a lot of background noise. I am more concerned about the static noise, not random sounds from outside etc. If I want to hear you while watching the series, the noise will be evident throughout the watchalong and it really impacts the experience. Hopefully you could find a way to mitigate that. P.S. Really stoked for The Wire! Glad that you guys are going through all the great ones.

heheheheheh

I have now reached this episode as a watch-along with you, so I don't know if people have already mentioned this in the comments, but some interesting non-spoiler, in-universe factoids for you: Their universe is known for having extraordinarily long seasons that vary - that is why they keep talking about the "long summer" - the current one (as per this episode) has lasted for 10 years, longer than Bran has been alive. But sometimes it can only be a few years - both for winter and summer. The Kingsguard (of which Jaime and Ser Barristan are a part of) take vows of celibacy and also serve for life. They wear white cloaks - an interesting counterpoint to the Night's Watch, who wear all black. I can't remember if this will ever get mentioned in the show, so I won't describe it now, but Ned Stark's brother and father suffered a most gruesome death at the hands of Daenerys' father.
