Hugh Grant was cast as Gilderoy Lockhart but had to drop out with a conflict (I didn't catch whether you mentioned that). He would've been great for sure! Branagh's charisma proved a fine replacement anyway.

there are seven weasley kids - at this point, five still live with their parents when not at school (percy, fred, george, ron, and ginny). the others (bill and charlie) are older - in the first movie, ron mentioned one of them working with dragons in romania.

Oooh, I almost forgot -- There's a post-credits scene, do check it out. 😁

I'm really enjoying these Friday night Harry Potter reactions with you guys; it's a great way to end the work week! And speaking of Maggie Smith, I would love for you to watch at least the first season of "Downton Abbey". It's only seven episodes, and you will fall in love with Maggie Smith forever.

Pam Nail

Most people these days know Maggie Smith from these movies and Downton Abbey, but she's had a pretty incredible career. Including two Oscar wins for THE PRIME OF MISS JEAN BRODIE and CALIFORNIA SUITE. She was also in both Sister Act movies, as well as MURDER BY DEATH, DEATH ON THE NILE and the 80s CLASH OF THE TITANS.

I appreciate your acknowledgement of JK's terrible views on the trans community. I'm a mom of a trans son and a big HP fan, as is my son. It's always hurtful when someone reveals those views, but it's been particularly painful with Jo because of how enlightened she seemed on gay rights. It really took us by surprise. I do try to avoid doing anything that gives her more money as she's expressed it being a support to her personally and her views. But I do agree that the content belongs to us now. And several people who've worked on the films have voiced support of the trans community and I appreciate them.

Laura Room

I also want to say that the Harry Potter series is my exception to the rule. I've never experienced any other film adaptations which got it do right. I'll have one exception in part 4 and one for part 5, but the films really fo the books justice. Part 3 might be my favorite overall. Can't wait to watch it with you!

Thank you for sharing that. I agree it feels gross contributing more money to her (my parents live near St. Augustine, FL, and she had her yacht parked in their local harbor recently, so she definitely already won the money game regardless). I'm really glad Radcliffe and Watson have spoken out in support of the trans community. It really sucks that some of the people she chooses to punch down at are fans of her work like your son. Seriously, what kind of person says hateful things about children??

Laura Room

No, but the end credits on part 3 are particularly entertaining. You'll see :)

One of the actors from this movie will show up on the West Wing. I won’t tell you which one, but I will be curious to see if you are able to recognize them when they appear.

I think there are a few differences between acknowledging that John Lennon was an abusive husband and still listening to the Beatles, and acknowledging Rowling's transphobia and still enjoying Harry Potter. Big one being that John Lennon is dead and can't profit off of Beatles residuals, but also Rowling doesn't just have shitty personal views, she is actively campaigning for and donating to anti-trans causes so buying her products contributes to that in a much more tangible way. That said the streaming residuals she gets at this point are likely so tiny that I'm not worried about it, but I'm only speaking as an ally so I can't blame any trans folks who aren't on board with still watching Harry Potter content.

Chris

Another difference is that we know about Lennon being abusive to his first wife because he was the one who first talked about it publicly and he changed his behavior. I’m not saying he deserves a pass, just that this is a difference from someone who continues to be horrible and is proud of it.

After seeing Hugh Grant in the DnD movie, I can definitely imagine him as Lockhart. he might have been a tiny bit too likable, though, don't you think? Branagh did a great job at walking the line between charismatic and an obvious douche :D

Maria Stoycheva

there are some actors who don't need to be in a lot of stuff to be legendary. I think Maggie Smith is one of them. I remember loving her from the moment I saw her in HP. It helped that I really loved McGonagall in the books, of course, but she had that quiet authority that only she and Dumbledore have, I think, and that I find so important for the feel of the whole series.

Maria Stoycheva

Laura, has JK really said that she considers any money being spent on HP to be personal support of her? that's absolutely ridiculous, if so. I sometimes wonder how such a narrow-minded woman managed to create such an amazing universe... I agree that we shouldn't be giving her money, btw. If I could steal from her, I would :D (does pirating count?) But I firmly believe that we don't need to stop loving the HP universe just because its author is not a great human being :/

Here's what se said on Twitter oHere's what se said on Twitter in 2022 in response to a tweet, "how do you sleep at night knowing you've lost a whole audience from buying your books?" she tweeted "I read my most recent royalty cheques and find the pain goes away pretty quickly."

Yannick Denis-Trudel

I agree that Lucius Malfoy was a bit intense towards Harry at the end of the movie, but the spell he was about to cast was even more nefarious than you might think! Don't want to spoil anything, but you'll be able to get the meaning in the 4th movie.

Saying JK Rowling is a "garbage person" just because she has another opinion than you is very insensitive and overall a weak statement. While I don't necessarily agree with her views, she never harmed anybody. She was only - even if extrovertedly - expressing her views. Look at all the good things she did like donating lots of money to charities and people who need it. Calling her a garbage person just casually seems just as concerning because it is an expression of a black-or-white mindset, which is generally very harmful. So please express yourself more definedly when talking about such heated topics. Sorry I had to make that criticism, note that I have nothing personal against you, its just a matter of conscious choice of words. Thanks for uploading this content.

Jamie Morgan

Yeah, no, she is actively harming the trans community. "Trans women aren't women" isn't an opinion, it's hate speech.

David

No, its actually not. It is a statement that is totally out of relation to the hate she gets. "garbage person" is hate speech. It really comes down to human identification with form. What we experience now is in its root the same as the reason why religious wars were fought. Getting offended by a mental construct that another person ascribes to you is the real madness. Whether you refer to yourself as a man or woman, it is a mental construct, no matter if you are a transgender or standard. Being so identified with it that you get angry at other people when they say or think something different is… what is happening right now.

If you'd like some insight on scoring films, Michael Giacchino (who, in my opinion, is the successor to John Williams) has done a fair few documentaries and behind-the-scenes stuff about it. My favourite was his 'Up' analysis but I cannot find it anywhere for the life of me! There is one on YouTube about The Incredibles which is pretty good. I have to stop myself from gushing now, I'm a huge film music nerd! XD

Youtalkingtome

Love Michael Giacchino, in many ways he does feel like a successor to John Williams. So many fantastic scores and he is half his age!

As a trans woman, I know that her being an active member of terf actually does harm the trans community. Not sure if you know what terfs are, but they are actively trying to take away trans rights and her being a celebrity with a platform to spread her hate and false information is 100% harmful. She donates money to try and make people hate her less, she doesn't do it out of the kindness of her heart. Sorry to make that criticism, note that I have nothing personal against you, its just a matter of having the proper information and facts.

Valorie Faye

With that being said, I can separate the art from the artist and as someone who grew up with these books and movies, I completely agree with these reactors that once art is released, the people own it and interpret it. Harry Potter and its franchise doesn't actively show disdain for the trans community or the lgbtq community so obviously I have no issue with it.
