wait I didnt know we were getting this today, thank you! 🙏 why is this my favorite patreon

For me this is when the series gets REALLY good. I love this movie.

Maxxie

This is the first movie in the series where they had to cut significant portions from the book to make it fit, because the books do get longer and longer. Here is some context and extra info - it's not spoilers for the movies but it is for the books, so read at your own discretion guys ! - About the white stag by the lake - that's a Patronus. A weak Patronus shows up as a white mist, but a fully-fledged one is corporeal and takes the form of an animal. Different wizards have different animals as their Patronus. - We get a lot more backstory on Harry's dad and friends in the book. in particular, we learn that they are the ones who created the Marauders' map. - In the movie it's never explained why Sirius can turn into a dog, and Pettigrew into a rat. The reason is that all three of Lupin's friends managed to become Animaguses - wizards who can turn into animals at will - in order to be able to safely keep company to Lupin during the full moons. Harry's dad could turn into a stag.

Maxxie

As for your final question regarding HP movies considered bad - the next one is by far the most divisive in the series, but not because it's objectively bad, rather because it takes significant liberties with the source material, which never goes over too well with hardcore fans. You'll be the judges in two weeks !

wooooo!! LOVE this one ❤️ just some fun facts that you will definitely hear multiple times from several different commenters! - MARAUDERS!! The marauders, a mysterious group of students that created the map to cause mischief and chaos during their hogwarts years. They keep it a mystery in the movies, but it’s absolutely ripped apart in the books. The four names we see: Moony = Remus (the connection is obvious) Prongs = James Potter (he was an animagus, transforming into a stag. Prongs refers to the prongs on his horns) Padfoot = Sirius Black (who can turn into a dog with padded feet) and Wormtail = Peter Pettigrew (who’s rat tail reminds of worms) As the story goes, the four became inseparable in hogwarts, sharing a gryffindor common room (intresting to note, peter is the first truely ‘bad guy’ we see that’s NOT from slytherin!). After finding out of remus’ condition, they learnt the animagus process to keep him company during the full moons. A patronus’s form is meant to turn into your spirit animal, sent to protect you against the evilness of dementors. I find it very sweet that Harry’s patronus turns into his father, who, even after death, comes and saves him from certain death. You asked how sirius escaped: i believe the books explained that he would turn into his dog form in his cell, which allowed him more peace from the dementors who could not recognise him. One day, he became thin enough to be able to fit through the bars - escaping. You also asked why there hasn’t been a prequel of harry’s parents era - a question the fandom has been asking for years! As it is, if you look at archiveofourown - the most popular site for fanfiction - you will find over 24,000 books written under the “marauders era” catagory. We didn’t get it, so we made the media for it! - I always get angry at the boggart they showed for remus. In the book, it’s just vaguely described as a floating, glowing orb that resembled more a crystal ball. This was a lot more of a subtle hint compared the the giant moon they showed in the movies 😭😭 - and we get introduced to time travel! they took out most of the explanations in the movie - so here’s a lil bit of context. The Time-Turner is a magical device that is controlled by the ministry of magic, charmed only to go back hours. You can’t go back months or years. They’re highly regulated by the ministry, and hermione was only given one by professor mcgonagall for her studies and responsible nature. - I think that’s all i wanted to say - all your other questions will be answered eventually throughout the series. Once you finish with the moves, i hope you do the official sorting hat quiz and patronus quiz on pottermore! Would be intresting to see what you get.

Personally, my least favourite movie in the series is number two! I just find it a bit dull compared to the others.

I don't know of any of the movies that fans think is "bad" per se, but I do know that *this* movie is the one that upset fans the most in terms of derivations from the book -- at least while the movies were still coming out. In particular, there's a lot of backstory in the book about Harry's dad's generation at Hogwarts and the friendship of James, Sirius, Remus and Peter (or the "Marauders," as they call themselves) that there just isn't time to cover in a movie. Speaking of which, without getting too much into the details of all of the Marauder stuff that was left out, the movie could have been clearer that James, Sirius, Remus and Peter actually WROTE the Marauders' Map that Fred & George give Harry. That's how Remus (and later Sirius) know that the map can't be wrong and that, if Peter is on the map, he must still be alive. Sirius's line about Hermione being the "brightest witch of [her] age" has always bugged me. It's such a weird thing for him to leave on, and it has led to some wild overinterpretation (IMO) from fans. She's the brightest 14-year-old witch, not the Brightest Witch of the Twentieth Century. In terms of your question about whether any of the films are popularly recognized as "weaker" than the others, the answer is yes and no. People who are fans of just the movies rarely seem to feel that any of them are significantly worse than the rest, but some fans of the books are a lot more mixed - particularly on 4, 6 and 8 from what I've seen. It's important to remember that the books generally got much longer as they went, whereas the movies generally got a bit shorter as they went, so more and more stuff had to be omitted or simplified. As someone who saw most of the movies before reading the books, and then caught the last few movies in theatres as a book reader, I think that all of the movies turned out very well but pretty much all of them past the first two could have benefitted from a few extra scenes. My personal favorite movie of the franchise is 6, even though it's arguably the most different from the book.

TC Elba

I know a lot of people will mention about some of the plot details in the book being missed- which a shame, but from a purely movie perspective it's the one of the best directored and shot of the series. also i think the kids acting takes a jump up as well

Kevin L

Love love love this movie! Fantastic production from start to finish. On this rewatch I realize how much Emma Watson is the MVP of the final mind-bending sequence; all the kids are really growing up now, but she especially delivers.

Brian Harris

This is probably my favorite of the movies - although 4,5, and 8 are all pretty great too. I love how Lupin and Black act as Harry’s entree to a historical event he’s only heard legends about … and how un-glorious it is. These men carry battle scars we can never fully understand. They’re heralds of a wider, more frightening world, and cautionary figures … it’s important to remember they weren’t much older than Harry, Ron, and Hermione when Voldemort first rose to power.

dys

Easily my favorite of the movies, obviously not alone in that opinion.

Dylan Larsen

I think you guys can see why most fans will find this movie to be their favorite in the series. Its up there for me as well, personally I really like the 6th movie.

Jeff

I think this is my favorite of all the films, though the rest of them are quite good. I didn't read the books first, so I have no complaints about the adaptation. I feel it was a very successful work of excellent writing, directing, and acting, and pulled us into the Potterverse even more. When you are finished with all the movies, I suggest you react to the "Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts". I thought it was going to be a cheesy reunion show, but it turned out to be a very entertaining and extremely moving documentary. Kevin, I believe you are the first -- and only -- person to ever compare Harry Potter to Elisha Cuthbert in "24". And yes, you're right. And Joe, I'm thrilled to know that you are among those of us who can appreciate "Moonraker" for what it was. Thanks for the new classic quote: "Who needs Austin Powers when you have Roger Moore?"

Youtalkingtome

It is really nice seeing the films without having a comparison to make with the books. Like most people, I am usually disappointed with a film adaptation of a book I love (The Prince of Tides and numerous works of Stephen King come to mind). But taking these in solely for their quality as films has been a lot of fun.

Andrew Hansen

You need to read the books. You would be shocked how differently focused the subplots of this story is

Weird Magic

One of the things this series of movies does better than probably any other is tone - it sets the tone differently each time, and also ages the tone with the main characters as they age perfectly. As it goes thru it gets darker and more adult so to speak. Although I still think they jumped the shark a bit with the Dumbledore/McGonagall sex scene in movie 7, but I'll let you decide when you get there about that one. #sarcasm As the resident IMDB ratings guy here I'll state that all the movies were between 7.4 and 8.1, with the 7.4 being Chamber of Secrets and 8.1 still to come. Personally, I like 4 & 6 slightly above the others but none of them qualify as "bad".

Youtalkingtome

Yes, I would love to do a video where we do the sorting hat. So much fun Potter content. Thank you for sharing all the info as well. We really appreciate it

Youtalkingtome

I personally don't mind if a movie changes things from a book. An adaptation should be completely up to the writers of the film or show. Change can be a good thing :)

Youtalkingtome

I love reading a book after I've seen the movie or show. In my mind it just expands upon what I've just seen. That and usually when I read the book first I find the changes in the movie distracting.

Youtalkingtome

The lore is so great. As a pretty big fan of science fiction, this is scratching an itch I didn't know I had...Fantasy! This and GOT have been awesome so far

Youtalkingtome

You really had me for a second there. If Dumbledore dropped robe that might be the scariest thing in the franchise

I took my first trip to the UK last year and visited the platform 9 3/4 at Kings Cross, saw Australia House which was the inspiration for the design of Gringott’s bank, and went to see the cemetery in Edinburgh where JK Rowling got a lot of the names for the characters. I did not do the studio tour or take the train in Scotland where they take you to many of the Hogwarts exterior/nature scenes. But others told me they liked it. I rode a double decker in London and nearly broke my arm. The drivers don’t wait for you to get up the stairs and sit down. They just take off. Thank goodness I was holding on to the railing or I would have been badly hurt. There’s a made for tv movie called Magic Beyond Words: the JK Rowling story on Amazon (unauthorized biopic). It only gets 33% on rotten tomatoes, but it’s a background on how she wanted to write her whole life, how she came up with Harry Potter, trials and tribulations, etc. It wouldn’t spoil anything for you, but it’s not award winning either. Poppy Montgomery plays Rowling.

Youtalkingtome

I'm so jealous I didn't watch these movies before I went to London. I can't wait to go back and just geek out

related to your comment about rickman's portrayal of snape and how . . . dramatic he is, emily mcgovern has a whole comic strip series called my life as a background slytherin that uses this to amazing effect. she usually describes snape's movement as a flounce, so now that's how i think of it too. here's an example of the strip - i wouldn't go looking for more yet because some contain or refer to things that are a little spoilery, but you should definitely enjoy them after you finish. https://www.instagram.com/p/CdasTFFIGMy/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==

I wish I had seen the Davinci Code before I went to Rome (for the locations).

adeepindigo

I think the difference between Harry and his friends and most of the other kids at the school is that the other kids generally follow the rules and don't have other wizards trying to undermine their existence. Harry and co are prone to going rogue to save themselves or each other whereas the other kids might do pranks or rule breaking inside the grounds, normal kid behavior, but the reason Hogwarts is dangerous for Harry and his friends is a combination of factors that are not applicable to the rest of the student body. Most students avoid the whomping willow or the shrieking shack, wouldn't have heard the basilisk in the walls, wouldn't have been been targeted by Quirrell, and a bunch of other things that will happen to Harry at school over the course of the series. It's a dangerous school, as magic is dangerous, sure, but it's more dangerous for Harry due to many factors both out of his control and due to his hero complex in many cases and his sense of loyalty and bravery in others.

Youtalkingtome

Very well said. Love that Harry is a risk taker. He definitely does have a hero complex. Luckily it's worked out three times now

Jordan Steele

The fourth is also the first one to be significantly expanded in length, so it was the first to really lose entire storylines. I enjoy the movie, but there are a few changes made to key scenes that I thought weren't for the better. Still entertaining, though.

Jamie Morgan

I know a lot of people love this one, but I'm not a massive fan of the tonal shift. A lot of the 'comedy' bits felt really forced and fell flat for me. That being said, it might be my favourite screenplay of all of them. The bit in the Shrieking Shack with all the revelations about Sirius and Lupin and Scabbers/Pettigrew, and then Snape shows up, and Harry disarms him, oooh I LIVE for that kind of drama! Also, I would suggest if you're going to buy the books or any HP merch to get it second-hand, or get original stuff made by independent artists, so you're not giving R*wling any money.
