commenting before watching: Prisoner of Azkaban was my second favorite of the book series, and Alfonso Cuarón adapted it so well. Goblet of Fire is my favorite of the books, but the adaptation is not executed nearly as well so it doesn't rank in even the top 3 of the films for me. It has the same basic problem as the first two movies of just flitting from major scene to major scene, with little of the connective tissue of just existing in this world that I loved so much in the books and that Cuarón managed to capture. Mike Newell steered some of the acting choices really wrong here, too, most infamously the Dumbledore line that became a meme: "HARRY DID YOU PUT YOUR NAME IN THE GOBLET OF FIRE", Dumbledore asked calmly. I was never a fan of *either* Richard Harris or Michael Gambon as Dumbledore, talented actors both but the book character is such a warm grandfather figure to Harry in a way the movies never captured at all. But otherwise we get some more acting legends; Brendan Gleeson, David Tennant, and an early preview of what Robert Pattinson is capable of.

I'm not aware of a least favorite Potter film, but Prisoner of Azkaban might rank as favorite among fans. This series did the best I've ever seen of living up to the books. Goblet of Fire presented my first disappointment in that I was expecting to see the veelas. Was bummed not to see them, but this and every one of the films is just great!!

Laura Room

Oh, another memory is that GoF was the first where I'd read the book first. By the time I'd gotten to the cemetery scene. I was so into the film that I'd forgotten that a student, a child, is literally murdered. Made it so powerful. This is definitely a turning point. Ray Fiennes does play Voldemorte from here on out and he is fantastic!

thank u next

Perfect timing ❤️ Love you both

azkaban was my favorite book - and is maybe also my favorite movie? i'd rank goblet of fire lower in both formats, but i appreciate it for really raising the stakes. looking forward to order of the phoenix. 🙂 and, until then, 🤐.

Pam Nail

- The longest book in the series is Order of the Phoenix, which is the next movie. - I've seen this movie a fafillion times, but this must be an extended edition because there were a handful of scenes that I was seeing for the first time on this rewatch. Notably the scene where Ron talks about Crouch not being liked at the Ministry (fans used to grumble a lot about the movies not showing Ron's knowledge of the wizarding world, so I'm surprised I never heard about at least *that* extra scene). - "Wormtail" was Pettigrew's nickname at school. That's part of the backstory that was left out of the Prisoner of Azkaban movie (his friends Remus, Sirius and James were Moony, Padfoot and Prongs, respectively, and they wrote the Marauders Map that Harry used to sneak out of school in the previous movie).

Jenna

As Pam noted Peacock has the extended versions of the movies, not the theatrical version. So there were multiples scenes that you saw that are not in the version most people know.

Yannick Denis-Trudel

I'll add my voice to the last 2 comments (from Jenna & Pam Nail) that the version shown on Peacock is a slightly extended version (about 3 minutes more) I'm in Canada and I watch it on Crave, and we have the Theatrical version. It was a bit difficult to understand what was happening about 3-4 times during the rewatch. And this time, you didn't use subtitles so it was quite difficult to re-sync with you guys. I've seen a post explaining that Peacock has the extended version of all 8 movies. But let's just say they're NOT Lord of the Rings Extended ;-) I'll come back to my comment in Chamber of Secrets (2nd movie) when I said that near the end, in the corridor where Harry made sure Dobby was going to be freed from his service to the Malfoys, Lucius Malfoy was casting a spell (or curse?) on Harry, and was stopped by Dobby... He was starting to say "Avada..." Quite the spell, don't you say?

Youtalkingtome

Damn, he was gunna straight up kill Harry! Okay so Peacock was irritating me as well. Should we just rent next time? Because I feel like the formatting on Peacock was slightly off as well.

Youtalkingtome

I thought he was great. Kinda bummed it ended with him showing up because he stole the movie! RIP Cedric

Youtalkingtome

I am a huge fan of Richard Harris as Dumbledore. PoA is my favorite but Harris will always be Dumbledore for me. I loved how soft spoken he was. He does give me the grandfather vibes as well. Gambon is a great replacement though.

Maxxie

I read this randomly online so don't take my word for it, but Lucius beginning to cast the Killing Curse at the end of the second movie was actually a blunder. It doesn't happen in the books, the character would certainly not do something so reckless right outside of Dumbledore's office, and the actor didn't even know what that curse was, he just read the line he was fed. In fact, in some versions the subtitles change the word Avada for Vera - a transfiguration spell rather than a lethal one, which is a lot more sensible.

Simon Rogers

Guys - I'd love to watch along but the version you watched is on Peacock which isn't available outside the US - I tried two different versions and neither match - making it impossible to follow. Might be worth using the standard theatrical release for future reactions.

David

Dudes how did you find a version with the hoggy hogwarts song? I didn't know that even existed xD

nj

ah - so that's why i kept getting out of sync for the first movie, when i watched it on peacock and y'all were on max. i thought maybe peacock had cut things rather than added them. but i suppose since peacock isn't available outside the u.s., it probably would be better to rent the next one if they're still exclusive to peacock. seems like the easiest way for everyone to stay in sync.

Yannick Denis-Trudel

Thanks for this explanation, Maxxie.... and it makes more sense, I agree! Sorry if I lead you all into the ditch on this one.... I always heard that word in CoS, and it bothered me.

Jeff

I don't subscribe to Peacock so I rented it on Prime, and like everyone else mentioned, the sync was off because of the extra scenes on Peacock. I'm happy to subscribe to Peacock for you guys (anything for you!), but maybe it's better for you to rent the next ones instead so we can all be on the same page. Whatever's easiest for you. As Harry grows up, the content gets more mature, ultimately ending up in a very dark, serious finale when he is a young adult. I would say that only the first two could really be considered "children's movies." (It's funny, I just realized that going into the 5th Harry Potter movie is a bit like going into the 5th season of "The West Wing"; we're all a little older, less idealistic, and more aware of the dark forces in the world.)

Joy M

So HBO removed the Potter movies. I had to dig out my blu-ray set and dust off my Blu-ray player.

dys

Also part of that backstory that was left out is the reason Sirius could turn into a dog and Wormtail/Pettigrew into a rat, they all learned the ability to turn into animals so they could safely hang out with Remus during his werewolf transformations. Harry's dad's animal form was a stag, just like the form of the patronus charm Harry casts against the dementors.

Joy M

Order of the Phoenix was my favorite book and movie. Can’t wait to see how you guys react to it.

Weird Magic

I watched on Peacock - so it's going to probably end up being darned if you do, darned if you don't on whichever version they watch.

Weird Magic

I always think of Allison Janney when I see her - glad somebody else said it too :)

Youtalkingtome

Literally we just used Peacock! Apparently that's what's on their service. The first 3 we did on Max and they are now gone.

Joy M

Frances de la Tour who plays Madame Maxime was in another great movie I’ve been meaning to recommend to you guys, The History Boys. Richard Griffith who plays Uncle Vernon in the Potter films is also in that movie along with James Corden and Dominic Cooper. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_History_Boys_(film)

dys

Yeah just renting it is probably best. On the plus side you reminded me I even still had a Peacock subscription, canceled that waste of money.

The next movie, Order of the Phoenix, is actually the longest HP novel, but regrettably the movie is one of the shortest in the film franchise. That doesn't make it a bad movie, but it does mean that some things were left out. For instance, Dobby is in the book but not in the movie. This doesn't change the storyline at all. There is one detail in the books that is important to a loose end from Prisoner of Azkaban (that you guys even commented on!) that is left out of the Order of the Phoenix movie but I'll save what that is when you finish the next movie as well as one or two explanations that are never mentioned in the movie but are important to know that Harry knows going forward that I'll also save. Buckle up! We're definitely not in kids movie territory anymore, these are firmly YA films now.

Youtalkingtome

That's awesome to hear. I love this franchise so much and we're only 4 movies in! Can't wait to hear the details

Jordan Steele

Only down side to this is that Peacock (where Joe and Kevin are streaming) is streaming extended cuts of the films, so there are some extra scenes and a few cuts (to make some newer scenes not seem odd), so things go off the rails if you're viewing blu-ray/ original theatrical versions. I noticed it here when they did the Hogwarts song, which isn't in the theatrical cut, but is here. Also, in the theatrical cut, Snape says "you and your friends are brewing polyjuice potion and I'm going to find out why." While in this cut, they had snape stop after mentioning the ingredients and then included an extra scene with Hermione explaining that he thinks they are brewing polyjuice. Edit: I see now, though that going forward they'll use the theatrical cuts - so I guess all is good!

Holly Colclasure

Loved that you recognized David Tennant. Aside from Doctor Who, he's also in Good Omens and Broadchurch.

Youtalkingtome

See, I've never seen and have barely heard of those projects! I recognize him and obviously he's very talented. I need to check out more of his work.

In my opinion Ron´s behavior in this movie is quiet understandable. He has 5 older brothers, who were all really succesfull in school, quidditch or popularity and his best freind is the most famous person in the wizarding world. In the first movie he looks in the mirror Nerhegeb and sees himself als headboy and quidditch captain winning the house cup. So it´s established, that his deepest desire in life is to get some recognition. Still he´s always a loyal friend to Harry and suddenly it seems that Harry dooesn´t trust him enough to tell him how he managed to trick the goblet of fire. I think Harry understands how Ron feels betrayed and that is the reason why he forgives him so fast. Also, Cedric´s death is the turning point of the Harry Potter series. Up to that point the story plays in a time of peace, but with Cedric´s death the Second Wizarding War has started.

Youtalkingtome

I get where he's coming from. Teenagers. I liked that they didn't spend the whole movie that way. The stakes do feel high and I'm really digging where this is going.

Kristi Govertsen

This was my favorite book of the series—although three through seven are all a wild ride as they veer away from the younger kid vibes of the first two. As for the movies, they’re all good, and I don’t know if I could pick a favorite💛. I sort of wish these had been made in the era of prestige TV, as SO many interesting details about the world, the wizarding families, the school, the history and backstory, the levels of magic the kids are learning as they get older, the secondary characters, the teachers and classmates, etc. had to be (understandably) left out to meet the constraints of fitting the stories into two-ish hour-long movies. Books four through seven are very long, and could have been easily made into (at least) ten-episode seasons. On a totally different topic, I’m kind of surprised you two haven’t self-sorted (or Internet-quiz-sorted) yourselves into one of the four Hogwart’s houses yet. (My apologies if you already did this in another comment thread somewhere🙂.)

justjasper

rather late to the party but I'm swiftly going through your HP series reactions and figured I'd reply since no one explained. the deleted scenes that were included in this peacock stream are (from what I remember) the scene that includes Severus and Karkaroff/the rocking carriage lol, the scene mentioned by someone else about Ron talking about Crouch, the scene of some Durmstrang students finding dates to the Ball, there's also a scene before Harry arrives at Dumbledore's office after Barty Crouch's death (which I can't seem to remember but I know I had to realign my source with yours around that time), another scene is just before the third task where Harry's scar is warning him, lastly I believe one where Harry tries to get Cho's attention on some stairs but she's whisked away by her friends. looking forward to catching up to the rest of the installments! especially the most recent upload (and my personal favorite) Deathly Hallows, Part 1.

Youtalkingtome

So, one of my good friends is a huge HP fan, this is his least favorite of the movies. He hasn't spoiled anything for me. This is a big reason why. He gets even more mad when I told him that this is one of my favorites so far! lol

Maria Stoycheva

yeah, I am no fan of the movies either. the longer the books get, the less the movies resemble them detail-wise and that really annoys us book fans :D your reactions are cool, though, so I'm here for those. also, I think that the movies have generally decent casting, so that's all right too.

Maria Stoycheva

btw, totally not important, but Viktor Krum is Bulgarian, not Russian. he's the star of the Bulgarian quidditch team and we Bulgarians were hella excited to be mentioned in the book (even though Krum is not a last name you would find in any Balkan country (nor in Russia), so JK is losing a bit of credibility there lol)
