Glad to be the first Abu el Banat to post on this one!

Not my favorite Christmas episode but that's an exceedingly high bar and I still like this one a lot. The moment with Jed and Abbey is so incredible and a great example of what these later seasons do really well. They know they can't duplicate Sorkin's writing, so they lean a lot more on the actors. The dialogue in that scene is pretty straightforward, but what Martin Sheen and Stockard Channing bring to it makes it really special.

And so we begin Dylan Baker week on the channel! I know when you're done you'll probably rewatch and accompany it with The West Wing Weekly podcast. Of note with your pre-show discussion, the co-host (with Josh Molina) loved the Sorkin portion of The West Wing so much that he STOPPED WATCHING AFTER SEASON 4, and still created the podcast to go thru it. His insight as a Sorkinite and seeing seasons 5-7 for the first time while doing the podcast is a unique and interesting view into the show (once you get there, after you finish the Season 7 finale on 9/15/2025). Originally airing on December 3, 2003, ""Abu el Banat"" is Episode 9 of Season 5 of The West Wing. It is the 98th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 7.6, placing it as the #13 ranked episode of this season and #91 out of all the episodes shown so far. Not sure why this one is so low - there's nothing I can see that would push it to a mid-7's average

So that’s two actors from The Americans that have appeared on the the West Wing now. Noah Emmerich made a guest appearance trying to get someone off of death row in Season 1. Emmerich was also once married to Melissa Fitzgerald who plays Carol, CJ’s assistant.

If you want to talk about people who don’t have experience running for office, I worked in state government. Like they talk about in this episode, it’s where a lot of people who think they want to enter politics get their start. You can usually tell which ones are in way over their head before the first committee deadline. So many people pay zero attention to local and state politics, when in reality, that’s who is going to affect your life much more directly than your Congressperson or Senator. But most people couldn’t tell you who their state representatives even are. And I think it would shock them just how many state lawmakers have to be given a schoolhouse rock level breakdown on how bill passage works just a few hours before they go vote on your state tax policy, education, and healthcare.

I finally started listening to The West Wing Weekly podcast within the past month, and I love it. Joe and Kevin should certainly wait until they finish the entire series, but it's a great companion to rewatching the episodes. So we have only 13 more months of Joe and Kevin and The West Wing? I will be truly saddened when this comes to an end.

The thing about John Hoynes as Vice President, is that while he did have his spine, moral stance, and political ambition .. Whenever he was asked, despite his judgement, he acquiesced to the president. When the two people (one a child) was killed in church, Hoynes didnt want to goto Texas and speak against conceal and carry laws.. but he did. When it came to the Ethanol tax credit, which he spent his life opposing, he was going to vote for it at the presidents will (though he did not have to thanks to Sam). he is politically savvy to know that when it was his time to run for President, he would need the support of the current President (or at least not his condemnation) to have any chance. How many times can Bob Russel say no to President Bartlet before risking having no chance in career politics when the term expires?

Yes and if I remember correctly, Josh Malina hadn't seen (or did not remember much of) the 4 first seasons but Hrishi saw them many times. So you had one who really knew Seasons 1-4 very well and didn't know seasons 5-7 and the other one not really knowing 1-4 and really knew 5-7 :D That's funny and interesting.

Next week’s episode, The Stormy Present, has a shift in directors and feels more cinematic than recent episodes (in my humble opinion). You may want to close your eyes after the opening credits to avoid seeing the guest star names.

Ellie is portrayed by actress Nina Siemaszko, not Hope Davis, they do share a strong resemblance. Siemaszko also portrayed Annette Bening’s sister in The American President.

I think they did a huge effort to write a christmas episode worth of Sorkin, and they did a very decent job of thinking about issues that could hit, and put in the sorkinesque, heart stringy moments. And they kinda managed to do the real Sorking thing, which is start out by vastly different issues, which eventually gather around the same common theme for an even bigger impact. Here, I think, the kinda common theme is personal/family life vs politics. Sacrificing your family moments for your political career (Gus and the tree, Liz's childhood, Doug vs White Hous, Liz and Doug; CJ sacrificing her opportunity to care for her father for her job). So, well done.

Joe here. I didn't wanna be that guy in the video, but I'm unfamiliar with Hope Davis lol! Ellie was portrayed spectacularly though

I don't think it's better than any of the Sorkin Christmas episodes. It was still very good though. Quality episode.

Agreed about the guest star names, but not the director. Alex Graves did it, he directed 34 episodes and may have been the only one there from season 1 thru 7? (Also directed 6 episodes of G.O.T. in seasons 3 and 4). Maybe you meant direction and not directors? It does have a different feel, I'll agree with that - more like the CJ Dad/Reunion episode than a normal WW.

If my Grandfather was President I'd just want him to pick me up at school with Marine One, and then everyone would want to be my friend. :)
